Re: No footy again next week for me and my team

These 3 weeks when there are only AFL games are the perfect opportunity to have a full 5 game schedule each week when there is a chance of some fans looking for a footy fix

Re: Crows 2016

Finding all the Phil Walsh anniversary stuff a bit off, great for the club to remember him but the media seemed to have made more of it than is needed, every interview it is being raised and highlighted. I reckon the family would rather keep it low key and let it pass quietly,

Re: 2016 SANFL Crowds

I think TV and App usage is up due to crowds being down, don't they see that dedicated supporters of the past have now turned to passive supporters who get their info from these sources instead of being at the game?

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Well I see Sturt FC was on CH7 espousing how great it is to have the AFL reserves teams in the league.

The GM commented that people should watch they wish for with regards the AFL teams going, as it would hurt the league significantly.

Marty Mattner was also on saying how it makes the teams better etc.

So clear that Sturt's position has not changed since voting yes. They are obviously a massive supporter of their presence and also commented on the $100K they are getting each year for their presence. I didn't think they got $100K, but that's what the GM said.

Well Sturt is the only club that has their debt guaranteed by the SANFL so they need to stay in their good books

Absolutely not true that Sturt had their debt guaranteed by SANFL. They traded out of their financial woes through the debt demolition campaign, benefactors and hard work by board and management. The only thing the SANFL did was advance their distribution for two months so as they could pay long term creditors. SANFL categorically did not or have not provided the club with an extra cent period.

I can categorically guarantee they did.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Do it then Dutchy because you will only make yourself look foolish. I was present at the meeting when SFC went to the SANFL with hand on heart. Sturt got themselves out of the mess because of the reasons above and that alone. Sure they wanted SANFL to help but that was not and has never been the case.

Page 15 of the 2011 Sturt FC Financial Report below, who is foolish now?

Re: New Clubs for 2017

Div 3 would be perfect for Brighton and Id expect them to be D2 the season after. Morphy Parks are about par with Edwardstown so Div 4, maybe Div 5 if they want a soft entry.

Re: New Clubs for 2017

If the talk is true, my thoughts on where clubs could fall in. This is based on seeing various SFL and SAAFL games this season.

Brighton - Div 2. Far too strong for Div 3. Premiership contender in the SFL who have beaten Flaggies this year and come close to Reynella (who did win the Country Club Championship earlier this year as another poster correctly pointed out) earlier this year, with another blockbuster rematch later this month. I could see Brighton vs SHOC/Gaza being very close games. That is on the proviso Brighton keeps their players if a change in league happens.

Morphie Parks - Personally I liken them to the strength of Edwardstown when they were in the SFL, hence would suggest Div 4. I would imagine they would win more than they lose in Div 4. But I could see others arguing for Div 5 which wouldn't be a wrong answer either. Morphie Parks have been pushed by lesser teams this year but seem to come up with a win at the end of the day.

Hackham/Marion - I feel these teams are at the same level and I would happily suggest Div 6 is appropriate for both of these teams. But if required, I don't think any team could argue acceptance into Div 7 to kick things off. Hackham face the problem of a more than long drive to many grounds which would seriously jeopardise numbers willing to play and travel that far.

I am not proclaiming to be a suburban football expert, this is just my opinion on the state of affairs based on what I have seen different sides offer at various levels of football this year. The SFL would miss Brighton if they do depart, one of the strongest clubs in the league. I can't see the SFL missing Morphie Parks, Hackham or Marion too much if they do leave however.

Pretty accurate I reckon, I know it was only a trial game but it was the last trial of the pre-season and both teams were full strength when Flaggies belted Plympton this year by 20 goals and Plympton are mid table in Div 3. Brighton should be straight to Div 2, especially as they get some Glenelg overflow.

Re: AFL teams to stay, clubs to receive $250k this year - Ol

Don't get me wrong I still support my club, however it is passive support now, where as it used to involve membership for me and my kids and going to as many home and away games as I could.

Ironically I now follow them via twitter/SANFL app instead of going to games, according to the SANFL that is good for the comp so who am I to argue?

Re: Southern Football League

What honestly would be the point of playing 1 U'9's game as a curtain raiser to the C grade when the club has their remaining 4-5 junior sides playing on the Sunday? Especially when many families have more than 1 player in the family and they play another grade.

Thats the whole point you are missing, the SFL is based on playing 5 matches on the same ground, same day. Juniors and families are then connected to the seniors, with joint presso's that night to finish the day off. Im not sure how you can;t see the benefit of that.

This is one of the issues that Brighton will no doubt debate.

Re: Footy 2016

Was there a stat or something about teams not recovering that well from playing at AO? Or am I dreaming?

There was in the first year but the trend hasn't continued so Ive ditched it, if you are into live betting (B365's is amazingly good) there are some great opportunities in the night games to back the under...so many games are high scoring early then die in the arse once the dew sets in this time of year.

Closest SAAFL oval? (I'm presuming would be PHOS or Plympton?)

Re: New Clubs for 2017

You can't be serious? Its called the Adelaide Football League, not the Northern Football League. There are at least 2 teams in regional areas already in the comp...Hackham is at least in metro area!!!

Say a really strong club like Reynella wants to come to in with their 18 teams, are you going to knock them back as they are a half hour drive from the city?

Their situation is a lot different. You don't offer Brighton at least Div 3 you don't get them and believe me they will make our competition a lot stronger. ;)

Spot on, you need to offer D3 to Brighton to get them in, and they will be an asset to the SAAFL, with the vote now 50% Id be pretty confident the vote will be just a formality.

Got to feel for the committee of the RFC, they are no doubt trying to put in place actions to rebuild the club and then the players go do something like that just when the original story was becoming old news, wouldn't surprise me if some of those volunteers have had a gutful.

Re: Drugs, umps and other ammo's news

I've gotta be honest, I've been surprised by the amount of coverage received by both Roewater and Elizabeth in this whole process.
It's been a bit OTT.
My understanding is that Channel 7 is heavily targeting the northern suburbs in regards to coverage, as Nine's ratings were higher there than Seven's - that might explain the coverage Elizabeth received.
As far as their negative focus on Rosies, I've noticed that Seven will often run stories about SAAFL footy when there's a negative. Could it have something to do with Nine being the sponsor of the league?

id say they measure the social media impact/clicks on these stories and base it on that, It gets traction so they lead with it. Also its an easy story on a Sunday when presumably they don;t have the number of reporters on the ground as they do during the week.

Media will only report something if it is news worthy, so simply don't give them content!

While she is getting what she deserves I do cringe that the media have found out where she has lives, named her and chucked cameras in her face as she tried to leave home in a car.

I think its been handled really well right up to now, and the last thing anyone would want is to tip her over the edge with all the pressure she is getting. I think the media have a role to play here and step back a touch.

Chris Kendall's 2016 Magarey Medal Preview

A big thank you to Chris Kendall for his comprehensive 2016 SANFL Magarey Medal Preview which he has provided to SAFooty. You won't see a better summary of this years medal from anyone, thanks Chris for sharing it with us.

2016 MAGAREY MEDAL PREVIEW

The Magarey Medal always brings some surprises on the night and 2016 looks no exception with one of the most open fields in years. Any one of a dozen players could win without being a major shock and there is the added side of a number of players that could poll heavily with the dreaded asterisk next to their name through being ineligible. Port’s Kane Mitchell, Eagle James Boyd, Sturt’s Aidan Riley and South’s Daniel Bass all look set to pick up solid vote tallies but all are unable to accept the league’s highest individual honour through ineligibility.

Adelaide: Cameron Ellis-Yolmen: Has been one of the most heavily supported since markets opened, but missing three of the last four rounds might prove crucial. An excellent chance to start the night strongly after a game high 27 disposals and nine clearances in the round one thumping of West, and could follow it up with minor votes in round three, when finding it 28 times in the defeat of Woodville/West Torrens. A chance for a minor vote in the last kick round six loss to South with a 32 touch, eight clearance effort could well be met again in round seven, when 24 handlings and two goals were crucial. Strong claims to the top votes in the round eleven thumping of Norwood, following 39 possessions, five clearances and a goal, and the trend should continue in round 13, when 37 disposals and eight clearances led all comers. Will be fighting it out with teammate Harry Dear for the votes in round 14 after an equal game high 27 handlings and six tackles, but round 15 should see him at the top of the slips when his 29 possessions and ten clearances were pivotal in defeating Sturt. Could sneak a minor vote in the round 17 loss to the Eagles after finding it 30 times to accompany seven clearances, but should grab the three in round 18 with a 34 possession, seven clearance, two goal effort in the defeat of Port. That will end his polling, particularly with a quiet round 21 game against West, so will have a nervous last four rounds if he holds the lead.

Roughie: Mitch Grigg – Has polled well in the past and may find round one continuing that trend, finding it 23 times, to go with six clearances, seven inside 50’s and seven tackles in the thumping of West. 29 disposals, four clearances and four inside 50’s in the round two defeat of Port is another chance, but may have to wait until round 14 to hear his name again. 26 possessions, five tackles and four inside 50’s were crucial in the defeat of North Adelaide, and may sneak minor votes in the round 16 loss to Glenelg after 28 handlings, five clearances and three goals. Will fight it out with Ellis-Yolmen for top votes in the round 18 win over Port after 34 touches, nine clearances and seven inside 50’s, and the round 20 victory over Norwood should bring more, after 26 possessions, seven tackles, seven clearances and four inside 50’s. A good chance to take the top votes at Berri against West in round 21 after 26 possessions, six inside 50’s and three goals. Should continue his sound votegetting record here.

Central District : Chris Jansen: Only picked up six votes in an injury interrupted debut season, but more visibility and a number of dominant matches should have him much higher in 2016. Will be fighting it out with a host of teammates in round one after a massive 107 point win over North, but 28 touches and eight inside 50’s were crucial all day around the middle. An equal game high 33 handlings, six tackles and nine clearances could be noticed in the 21 point round three loss to Sturt, and 25 disposals, seven clearances and seven insider 50’s were a feature in the round five win over Port. 29 touches, five clearances, four frees and two goals should have him under notice in the round six victory against Norwood, but he may need to wait until the next encounter against Norwood, in round 12, where a game high 32 disposals, five clearances and six inside 50’s led the way. It will be hard to ignore 33 handlings, 6 clearances, three inside 50’s and three rebound 50’s in the Dogs 55 point round 13 victory over Adelaide, and a near certain three votes should result from the round 16 loss against Sturt after finding it 39 times to go with eight clearances and four inside 50’s. Round 18 could bring more votes with another game high 32 disposals and seven tackles, while leading the way of all comers again with 32 touches, five clearances and four rebound 50’s in the round 19 defeat of Glenelg will also have the men in green thinking. Could sneak a minor vote in the round 20 loss to Eagles after 28 touches, three tackles and three inside 50’s and sets up for an interesting round 22 in the win over West, with a game high 31 handlings, six clearances, six inside 50’s and a goal. Looks a major threat.

Roughie: Travis Schiller: Should kick off the night with maximum votes in the round one thumping of North with a game high 33 possessions and four goals, but might find it lean pickings until round eight, where 26 handlings, four frees, 11 clearances and two goals should again land the top votes in the victory over Glenelg. 32 touches, twelve clearances and a goal in the round nine defeat of Adelaide is another candidate for the three, and should again be under notice in the round ten win over West after finding it 31 times to go with eight clearances. Might sneak a minor preference in the round 14 defeat by Port when 31 touches and ten clearances were the Bulldogs high, and may follow this in the round 17 loss to South following 28 disposals, seven tackles and five inside 50’s. Should fight it out with Jansen for attention in the round 19 win over Glenelg after 31 possessions and nine clearances, but that may nearly end his night. Looks set for another good night but to fall short.

Glenelg: Matthew Snook – Picked up 13 votes last year and could improve here. Round one looks set to start the ball rolling after 24 disposals, nine clearances and six tackles in the loss to Glenelg, while the round four loss to Norwood should bring solace after a game high 29 possessions, seven clearances and four inside 50’s. Would be very hard to ignore for the top votes in the round eight defeat of Central after 29 touches, 14 clearances and nine tackles, and was under the umpire’s attention all day in the round ten win over Port with 27 handlings, seven clearances, four frees and a goal. Was excellent in the round 17 defeat of Norwood with 31 possessions, seven tackles and eight clearances, but that might close his 2016 campaign.

Roughie: Ben Sawford – Found plenty of it around the stoppages and right under the umpire’s attention for long periods. Excellent in the round two win over West with 23 disposals, seven clearances, six inside 50’s and three goals, and solid in the round five loss to Adelaide with 25 possessions, four tackles and four clearances,. May sneak a vote in the round seven loss to the Eagles after finding it 26 times to go with eight tackles and four frees, but can probably enjoy a few drinks until the round 15 win over South. 27 handlings, seven clearances, four inside 50’s and three frees were among the Tigers best, but unlikely to poll again from that point.

North Adelaide : Jordie McKenzie: First year SANFL players can slip under the radar in that opening season, but the former Melbourne on-baller has been stellar this year. May cool his heels until round six to land his maiden Magarey votes, but 25 disposals and ten clearances were vital in the defeat of Glenelg, and was under notice all day in the round seven loss to Adelaide following 24 touches, four clearances and four rebound 50’s. It is hard to see anyone else beating him for three votes in the round eight win over West, with 34 handlings, fourteen clearances and two goals, and is another good chance despite a round nine loss to Sturt when finding it 31 times to go with four inside 50’s and nine tackles. Another excellent chance in the round 11 defeat of Glenelg with a game high 33 disposals, eight tackles and six clearances, and while the Roosters lost by six points in round 15 to the Eagles, McKenzie’s 25 possessions, seven clearances and two goals were pivotal. 30 touches, three tackles and four inside 50’s in the round 18 loss to Central was clearly the Roosters best, and should close his night with votes in the narrow round 21 loss to Sturt after 28 handlings, seven clearances and five inside 50’s. Should finish high on the boards, but might fall short.

Roughie: Matt McDonough – His return to the SANFL may not translate into Medal votes until round seven, finding it 24 times to go with six clearances and seven inside 50’s in the narrow loss to Adelaide, but should find attention in the round eight win over West with 22 disposals, seven inside 50’s and a goal. Led all Roosters in the narrow round 14 loss to Adelaide following 27 touches, eight clearances and three inside 50’s, and should fit it out with McKenzie for notice in the round 15 loss to the Eagles after a game high 31 possessions, eight clearances and five rebound 50’s. Good chance for a double figure tally.

Norwood: Jaryd Cachia – Very solid in his return to the Parade, round two should start his night after 31 handlings, four tackles and two inside 50’s in the win against North. The round four defeat of Glenelg was notable for his 28 touches, 15 tackles and three inside 50’s, and may snare a minor vote in the round five loss to Sturt following 34 disposals, seven tackles and five inside 50’s. The narrow round 13 loss to Sturt should see him on the slips following a game high 26 possessions, four tackles, seven inside 50’s and a goal, and almost certain votes in the round 16 win over North after 33 handlings, six tackles and seven clearances. Led all comers in the round 19 win against West with 29 touches, four clearances and four rebound 50’s. A double figure night looks likely but will be well short of the top.

Roughie: Tim Webber – Might take a while to start his night, but the round seven loss to South should kick it off after 26 possessions, 13 tackles and nine clearances, and follow it up in the round nine victory over West with 24 touches, eight tackles and six inside 50’s. A chance for minor votes in the round 12 loss to Central following 21 disposals, eight clearances and five inside 50’s, but unlikely to be more than single figure tally.

Port Magpies: Jimmy Toumpas – The ineligibility of Kane Mitchell leaves Toumpas as the main chance at Alberton. Could start in the round one loss to Norwood following 25 handlings and four inside 50’s, but AFL duty will restrict his next chance until the round nine win over South after a 28 disposal, four clearance, two goal game. One of the best afield in the round 14 defeat of Central after 39 possessions, six inside 50’s and a goal, he could win notice in the round 16 win over the Eagles after 24 touches and three rebound 50’s. Round 20 may close out his night, after a 23 touch, four inside 50, three goal effort in the Glenelg victory. A double figure tally possible.

Roughie: Steven Summerton – So dominant in past seasons, the Magpie skipper may not poll until round 15, after 26 handlings, six tackles and 2.2 in the defeat of West. A good chance to back it up in the round 16 victory over the Eagles, with 27 touches and two clearances, and may sneak a minor vote in the round 18 loss to Adelaide following 25 disposals, six tackles and five inside 50’s. Should only have Mitchell ahead of him in the round 19 win over North, after 30 possessions, four inside 50’s and two goals, and finding it 33 times to go with four clearances and two goals in the round 20 defeat of Glenelg should have him on the slips again. Round 21 is his last chance to poll, with 33 handlings, six inside 50’s and four rebound 50’s, but looks likely to bring another strong finish.

South Adelaide: Brede Seccull – Has been a smoky in discussions, and if he can snag votes in the round two win against the Eagles, it may give a pointer to whether the umpires have noticed him early. 22 possessions, four clearances and three inside 50’s kept him under attention all day, and will be among a host of Panthers vying for votes in the thumping of West in round three, following 23 disposals, six clearances and five inside 50’s. Was around the packs all day in the round four win over Central after 20 handlings, four clearances, five inside 50’s and two goals, and may sneak a minor vote in the Port victory in round 12 following 24 touches, seven tackles, five inside 50’s and a goal. If he is within striking distance in round 14, look out for a big finish, starting with the win over Norwood with an equal game high 26 possessions, four clearances and eight inside 50’s, and might be the Panther who sneaks votes in the round 15 defeat by Glenelg. 24 disposals, eight tackles, seven inside 50’s and a goal was their best, and a big chance of the top votes in the round 17 win over Central following 33 handlings, ten clearances and two goals. Round 18 can bring more attention when finding it 27 times, as well as seven clearances and seven tackles when defeating West, The round 19 victory against Sturt may set him up for a grandstand finish, following 25 touches, four clearances and five rebound 50’s, and round 20 looks set for notice on the slips after 27 possessions, eight clearances and seven inside 50’s in the win over North. If he is within two votes of the lead going into round 22, then the night may prove interesting. 30 disposals, seven tackles and seven inside 50’s in the defeat of Adelaide will have him right under attention. Could be the bolter.

Roughy: Joel Cross – The dual Medallist has the advantage this season of playing in a dominant team and should start the season strongly in round one, with 26 touches, five clearances and two goals in the defeat of Glenelg. Will fight it out with teammate Brett Eddy for votes in the round three win over West, when finding it 24 times to go with four clearances and five rebound 50’s, and another big chance in round four after 24 possessions, seven clearances and a goal in the victory over Central. Can lock in a near certain three votes in round seven following 33 disposals, nine clearances and six inside 50’s when defeating Norwood but might have to wait until the next meeting against Norwood in round 14, where his 22 touches, six clearances and five inside 50’s were critical in turning the tide for the win. Round 17 should bring more attention after 26 possessions, seven clearances and two goals in the defeat of Central District, and the round 18 win over West is another chance with 29 handlings, seven clearances, five inside 50’s and a goal. The round 19 victory against Sturt was noted for his 25 touches, seven clearances and five clearances, and a game high 31 possessions, six clearances and five inside 50’s were eyecatching in the round 22 defeat of Adelaide. A mid-season flat patch may prove costly but should again poll well.

Sturt: Zane Kirkwood - The 2014 winner will need to wait until round three to open the account, but it should be the maximum after 33 possessions and six clearances in the win over Central. A solid chance to double that tally after round four following a game high 34 handlings, five tackles and seven inside 50’s in the belting of West, and minor votes beckon in round five with a 26 touch, eight clearance effort in the defeat of Norwood. Was a major factor when the Double Blues downed North in round nine following a game high 32 handlings, five clearances and five inside 50’s, and a minor vote could be on the slips in the round 12 win over Glenelg with 24 touches, eight tackles and five inside 50’s. Clearly the Blues best when defeated by Adelaide in round 15 after 30 possessions, eight tackles and six inside 50’s, and may pinch a minor vote in the round 18 loss to the Eagles with 32 disposals, eight clearances and four tackles. The round 21 win over North was a big day, with 28 touches, seven tackles and five inside 50’s, giving a big chance of a high teens tally.

Roughie: James Battersby- Could be the fly in the ointment to Kirkwood’s chances after a strong season. Should get the wheels moving in the round four win over West, with a 32 possession, ten clearance, seven tackle effort, before minor cotes beckon in the round six win over Port after 29 disposals, seven tackles and four clearances. The round eight win against South is another opportunity following 24 handlings, eight clearances and three inside 50’s, with the round twelve win against Glenelg his next chance after 23 touches, nine clearances and six inside 50’s. Should fight it out with Bulldog Chris Jansen for the top votes when the Blues scraped home by nine points in round 16, led by Battersby’s 33 possessions, thirteen clearances and five frees. Round 17 should provide the quick back-up when finding it 28 times to go with eleven clearances and two goals in the belting of West, and he led all comers in the round 21 defeat of North with 31 touches, nine tackles and eight clearances. 24 touches, seven inside 50’s and a goal capped off a solid day in the round 22 win over Glenelg, giving him an opportunity to press hard at the business end.

West Adelaide: Chris Schmidt – The only realistic chance of double figure votes at Milner Road, he may not be called out until round seven following 24 touches and four rebound 50’s in the loss to Port. May follow it with a minor vote in the round eight loss to North after 29 possessions and seven rebound 50’s, and the round nine loss to Norwood is another chance with a game high 33 touches and four clearances. Leading all comers in the round 13 win over Glenelg with 25 handlings and five tackles, he could also sneak a vote in the round 17 thumping at the hands of Sturt. Despite a 89 point margin, he was clearly one of the best afield with 38 possessions, ten clearances and seven tackles, but won’t poll again from that point after an injury sustained early in round 19 against Norwood ended his season. Could poll nearly all of West’s votes.

Woodville/West Torrens : Jared Petrenko – The current favorite after a strong season at Oval Ave, but may have to wait until round four to kick off his night. 29 disposals, seven inside 50’s and a goal in the win against North could fall under notice, while 30 touches, nine clearances and six inside 50’s give a strong chance of the top votes in the round five defeat of West. Should continue the run in round seven, however, finding it 32 times along with ten clearances and six inside 50’s when downing Glenelg, while the round eleven belting of Central brought 28 possessions, four rebound 50’s and seven clearances to have him among a host of Eagles vying for votes. The round 13 defeat of South should also have him under attention following a game high 30 touches, six inside 50’s and nine clearances, but will fight it out with a host of teammates in round 17’s win over Adelaide after 31 handlings, five clearances and four inside 50’s. Should back it up in the round 18 victory against Sturt following 29 disposals, seven inside 50’s and seven clearances and round 20 looks likely to bring more votes with a game high 32 possessions, six clearances and six inside 50’s when defeating Central. Highly unlikely to poll in the last two rounds so could have a nervous closing session.

Roughie: Chris Hall – Has been very consistent in 2016 and may find his polling starting at the earliest point, following 25 handlings and five inside 50’s in the win over Sturt in round one, but could cool his heels under round five when among a host of dominant teammates when finding it 29 times to go with five inside 50’s and five rebound 50’s in the belting of West. A chance at the top votes in the round eight win over Port with a game high 34 possessions and six inside 50’s, and should nail minor votes in the round ten victory against Norwood after 29 disposals and two inside 50’s. The round eleven thumping of Central brings further claims following 32 possessions, four clearances and a goal, and round 13’s 29 touches, four clearances and six inside 50’s when defeating South should see his name on the slips. Hall was dominant in the round 14 win over West with 32 disposals, seven inside 50’s and a goal, and the round 17 defeat of Adelaide is another big chance. 32 handlings, seven clearances and a goal only trailed James Boyd for game possessions, while round 20’s win against Central was notable for his 29 handlings and five inside 50’s, and would be hard to miss for top votes in round 21’s thumping of Glenelg after 26 touches and four goals. Might be a bolter, particularly with a dominant team season.;

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Anyone find it ironic how the SANFL point to TV ratings as a positive but can't guarantee there will be TV coverage in 2017?

Re: Southern Football League

Didn't play as well today as we played against the Emu's but got the job done. How is Saul Abbott's footy year? Couldn't get B grade game early on and was playing C grade, now lining up in the A grade GF.
