Re: SANFL Under 18s and Under 16s

Round 1 Torrens University SANFL U18 Match Wraps

Norwood 8.7 (55) d South Adelaide 8.6 (54)
A perfectly-timed volley from South Adelaide midfielder Sid Draper wasn’t enough as a desperate Norwood held on for a gritty one-point win in Round 1 of the Torrens University SANFL U18 competition.

Just one minute after teammate Jack Delean converted an eye-catching mark at Flinders University Stadium, Draper put the Panthers within the barest of margins in the 17th minute of the final term with his solo effort to make the Socceroos proud.

But the late-game heroics from the hosts couldn’t produce a remarkable victory as the Redlegs – led by Kade Maddigan (three goals) and Eamonn Cronin – hung tough to escape with the premiership points.

Cronin finished with 23 disposals and nine tackles while Jacob Newton tallied a game-high 26 possessions and five clearances for the visitors.

Delean was South’s only multiple goal kicker with two while midfielder Phoenix Hargrave (19 disposals, one goal) and captain Nicholas Schroder also battled hard for the hosts.

Central District 12.8 (80) d Glenelg 10.8 (68)
Central District overcame a slow start to record a confidence-boosting 12-point win against reigning premier Glenelg at X Convenience Oval.

Despite only managing one goal in the opening quarter en route to trailing by 16 points at the first change, the Bulldogs quickly got themselves back into the contest by booting 5.1 in the second stanza.

But it was the third term which proved pivotal as the hosts slammed on 5.2 while holding the Tigers to just 2.0 to set up the victory.

Bulldog Sebastian Wauer was everywhere to register 30 disposals, six marks and two goals while Samuel Sibbick and Riley McDonald were also prominent as teammate Tallan Rosenzweig booted four goals.

Glenelg excitement machine Ashton Moir, in line for League selection this week, did his chances of promotion no harm by booting 4.3 from 18 disposals and 10 marks.

Tigers Charlie McAuliffe and Bodie Ryan were also solid contributors but their efforts weren’t enough to overcome Central’s tenacity.

Sturt 13.12 (90) d North Adelaide 7.9 (51)
A barnstorming 10-goal first half propelled Sturt to an impressive 39-point win against North Adelaide at Thebarton Oval.

Making the most of a significant inside 50 advantage of 51 to 36 for the match, the Double Blues did the damage in the second term by piling on 6.1 to the Roosters’ 1.2, opening up a 40-point lead at half-time.

From there, Sturt cruised home as captain George Pope (16 disposals), crafty Wil Thomas (16 disposals, two goals) and dashing Alex Holt (26 disposals) were all influential in the result.

Promising North midfielder Kane McAuliffe – a member of the AFL Academy – racked up a match-high 28 disposals and five clearances while teammate Henry Wicks chimed in nicely with 22 possessions and two goals.

Woodville-West Torrens 18.7 (115) d West Adelaide 5.7 (37)
Woodville-West Torrens made an early statement with a percentage-boosting 78-point win against West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium.

Restricting the Bloods to just one goal across the first three quarters, the Eagles showed off their potency as an astonishing 12 players logged their name on the goal scorers list.

Eagle Patrick Toole shone with 20 disposals, 10 marks and two goals while Rome Burgoyne, the son of Port premiership player Peter Burgoyne, tallied 27 disposals and 10 marks.

Sebastian Menta (three goals) headed a group of five players booting multiple majors for the visitors.

West’s Oscar Talbot, Bailey White and Carter Wright were praised by Bloods officials for their spirit in trying to stem the tide.

Re: SANFL Under 18s and Under 16s

Round 9 Torrens University SANFL U16 Match Wraps
from sanfl website

Sturt 8.19 (67) d South Adelaide 7.7 (49)
Sturt sit a game clear at the top of the Torrens University SANFL U16 ladder after an 18-point win over South Adelaide at Wigan Oval.

The Double Blues were dominant throughout but wasteful in front of goal, with inaccuracy keeping the Panthers in it at times.

Sturt on-baller Jackson Moody gathered 31 disposals and nine clearances and ruckman Blake Thredgold was terrific, winning 33 hitouts and taking four contested marks.

Half-back Cameron Woods was South’s best, finishing with a team-high 23 disposals and seven rebound 50s.

West Adelaide 11.9 (75) d Norwood 4.5 (29)
West Adelaide’s dour defence helped it win by 46 points against Norwood at Hisense Stadium.

The scores were tied at half-time but West held the Redlegs to just one goal for the remainder of the match to consolidate their standing in the top four.

West ball-winner Josh Goldie managed 28 disposals and five rebounds and fellow midfielder Malachi Lloyd laid 11 tackles.

Darcy Speyer gathered 32 disposals and five clearances for Norwood and Robert Varcoe kicked two of his side’s four goals while looking lively up forward.

Woodville-West Torrens 11.8 (74) d North Adelaide 7.7 (49)
A third-quarter onslaught was enough to see Woodville-West Torrens overcome North Adelaide by 25 points at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

The contest was tight and low-scoring in the first half before the Eagles kicked five unanswered goals after the main break to effectively secure the game.

Eagles duo Hayden Willmott (27 disposals and five clearances) and Jevan Phillipou (26 disposals and two goals) performed well, along with forward Cooper Reschke who kicked three goals.

Charlie Dickeson was clearly the Roosters best, gathering 35 disposals, 10 inside 50s and a goal for his side.

Central District 13.11 (89) d Glenelg 6.13 (49)
Central District overcame a slow start to record an impressive 40-point win over Glenelg at X Convenience Oval.

The Bulldogs faced a deficit at quarter time with Glenelg in control, but a couple of quick goals to Dougie Cochrane ignited the home side.

Central kept the Bays goalless in the second half as midfielders Dyson Sharp, Jack Gordon and Ayden Colbourne began to dominate.

Cochrane finished with three goals to increase his lead on the goal kicking chart, while Reed Francis-Nia Nia kicked two majors for the Tigers.

Round 9 Ladder
Sturt - 14 points (59.92%)
Glenelg - 12 points (54.33%)

Re: SANFLW Season 2023

SA Power Networks Leadership Award

Sturt captain Kate Harris has won the SA Power Networks Leadership Award after being nominated by the Double Blues for her outstanding team-first approach in 2023.

Introduced in 2021, the SA Power Networks Leadership Award recognises players for their off-field attitude as much as their on-field achievements.

Retiring Sturt skipper Maya Rigter, who Harris replaced during the season, won the inaugural award while Norwood captain Alison Ferrall claimed honours last year.

The award was developed from the Female Personal Pathways program – a series of workshops and forums covering leadership, financial and career development, club culture and mental health education.

SANFL clubs nominated a player based on a number of criteria, including demonstrating care in mentoring younger players at their club, inspiring and encouraging personal development and having values that reflect those of their club.

Harris, who was named captain of The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year, will receive a $10,000 contribution towards her studies at Torrens University.

Cook, the son of former Crows and Central District rover Tim Cook, is among three sons of former AFL players in the team, together with Dougie Cochrane (son of former Port and Kangaroos’ midfielder Stuart Cochrane) and Louis Kellaway (son of former Richmond defender Duncan Kellaway).

Starting at 1.30pm SA time, the opening encounter will be played at West Coast’s training facility (Mineral Resources Park) ahead of further matches on Tuesday July 4 against Victoria Country at Heritage Bank Stadium on the Gold Coast and Friday July 7 against Victoria Metro at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport.

Re: SANFL Under 18s and Under 16s

Torrens University SA U16 Team defeated by Western Australia

Inaccuracy has cost the Torrens University SA U16 team victory in its opening game of the AFL National Championships as it succumbed to Western Australia by five points in Perth.

Despite having five more shots on goal, the Croweaters were unable to place the Sandgropers under significant scoreboard pressure as they booted a wasteful 1.9 in the third quarter.

Trailing by just eight points at the final change, Julian ****’ charges outscored the hosts in the fourth term but again, kicking 3.4 to WA’s 3.1 wasn’t enough to reel in the deficit.

Half-back Luke Candy was recognised as SA’s best performer in Game 1 while captain Dyson Sharp and his deputy Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier were also strong contributors.

Full forward Dougie Cochrane, the son of former Port Adelaide and North Melbourne midfielder Stuart Coachrane, was SA’s only multiple goal scorer with two majors.

SA will now turn its attention to its remaining fixtures on Tuesday July 4 against Victoria Country at Heritage Bank Stadium on the Gold Coast and Friday July 7 against Victoria Metro at Fankhauser Reserve, Southport.

Re: SANFL Under 18s and Under 16s

Yes, Unley Oval is being dug up at the end of this season. Thanks mainly to State Government funding, new drainage and irrigation systems and turf will be laid once the warmer weather starts. It should be a big step forward and help the players with their training and playing which are currently compromised.
Cricket wickets will remain which is not ideal from a football perspective but a few ovals are in the same boat.
It was always hoped that the surface would be replaced, as part of the redevelopment.

My view is that the cricket wicket should go as it is only the C's and D's that use it from Sturt DCC.

Sturt FC could host some more SANFLW games earlier in the football season

Re: SANFL Under 18s and Under 16s

Round 13 Torrens University SANFL U16 Match Wraps

Glenelg 9.13 (67) d Norwood 7.9 (51)
A terrific second quarter proved the difference as Glenelg defeated Norwood by 16 points at Stratarama Stadium in Round 13 of the Torrens University SANFL U16s.

Looking to nail down a top-two spot, the Tigers proved a class above their opponents despite a valiant late surge from Norwood.

Bays ball-winners Isaiah Clothier (30 disposals and five tackles) and Timothy Alver (21 disposals and a goal) were both busy, with teammate Finn Crouch kicking three goals.

Jack Hayter was the standout performer for the Redlegs, gathering 29 disposals, eight tackles and two goals in a losing cause.

North Adelaide 10.7 (67) d South Adelaide 8.13 (61)
A late goal from Jay Saunders helped North Adelaide defeat South Adelaide by six points at Prospect Oval.

In a see-sawing affair, North raced out to a first-term lead, but South hit back to take an advantage into half-time.

The Roosters worked hard to wrestle back the lead as inaccuracy proved fatal for the Panthers.

In contrast, North capitalised on its opportunities in front of goal and snuck home by a goal.

Charlie Dickeson was excellent for the Roosters with 34 disposals and two goals, while Jacob McGarry booted three for the visiting Panthers.

Woodville-West Torrens 8.7 (55) d Central District 6.6 (42)
Woodville-West Torrens remained in touch with the top four following an important 13-point victory over Central District at X Convenience Oval.

The Eagles kept the hosts goalless in the opening term as on-ballers Jevan Phillipou, Zane Peucker and James Chalubek worked hard in the middle.

Although reeling in the margin appeared achievable, the Bulldogs weren’t able to claw their way back against an Eagles outfit eager to snap a two-game losing streak.

Phillipou finished with 23 disposals and a goal and defender James McGorman managed 22 disposals and six rebounds for the Eagles, while Jack Gordon (26 disposals and five marks) was Central’s best.

West Adelaide 4.13 (37) d Sturt 4.8 (32)
West Adelaide pulled off an incredible win by beating ladder-leaders Sturt by five points at Thebarton Oval.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Bloods, with frustrating inaccuracy and a goalless second half nearly preventing the victory.

West kicked four goals and 13 behinds to Sturt’s four goals and eight behinds, with the Blues kicking the only two goals of the second half.

It wasn’t enough though, as West held on to claim the narrow upset victory which ensured it remains in the top four.

Jaylen Sochacki was instrumental for West with 28 disposals and seven inside-50s, with Jett Dahlitz (27 disposals and eight rebounds) strong for Sturt.

Re: Adel Footy League- Women's

Congratulations to the Hectorville women on a strong season. Deserved winners.

When women's footy was first introduced, Hectorville decided not to enter a team straight away but develop junior teams first. This method seems to be paying off. The team is generally quite young and they have been playing together for some time now with a steady influx of new players coming up every year. Looking forward to a bigger and more competitive competition next season.

Good luck to those in the GF's next weekend.

Wise decision in the end. I was involved with Heccies in the 90's and they had a strong women's program back then, so it's great to see them win the GF some 30 years later - PS. I can't recall if they won one back in the 90's so apologies if they did. Onwards and upwards!

last flag won by hectorville was in 1994 in the old SAWFL days

Re: SANFL Under 18s and Under 16s

South win 2023 Torrens University SANFL U18 Premiership

South Adelaide 10.11 (71) d Sturt 10.9 (69)
South Adelaide hung on to win its first Torrens University SANFL U18 premiership by edging out Sturt by two points in a thrilling title-decider at Adelaide Oval.

With star midfielder Sid Draper shining to win the Alan Stewart Medal as best afield, the Panthers just managed to hold off the Double Blues to win their first flag in this age group since claiming the 1994 U19 flag.

Leading by 11 points at three quarter-time, Mark Clayton’s charges were under pressure when Sturt’s Loch Rawlinson launched a 50m set shot which bounced through despite four players standing in the goal square.

And after three consecutive misses on goal, it wasn’t until a piece of Draper brilliance sparked the match-winning goal to Dakota Sterzl in the 19th minute of the final term.

Gathering the loose ball at half-back, Draper – who made his Hostplus SANFL League debut this year – took three bounces through the corridor before passing the ball to Clay Shadforth, who handed off to Sterzl to goal on the run from 35m on the run.

Despite the testing conditions in the 28C heat, Sturt refused to concede as Jayden Adams kicked truly in the 23rd minute.

The Double Blues’ Luca Slade then goaled from close range along the ground with just eight seconds left on the clock.

And despite his best attempts to boot the ball straight back to the centre circle, the final siren sounded before the umpire could restart the play.

Draper collected 21 disposals, four clearances, three tackles and a goal while fellow midfielder Phoenix Hargrave was also an important contributor with 18 disposals, five clearances and a major.

Kangaroo Island product Zak Kier read the ball beautifully in the air to take 11 marks with his 17 disposals while key forward Noah Howes slotted three goals, including the first of the match in the opening minute.

Slade, the son of Central premiership rover Matthew Slade, was Sturt’s highest disposal-winner with 25 possessions, six marks and three clearances while Ned Atkinson, the son of Magarey Medallist Brodie Atkinson, collected 19 disposals, five clearances and a goal.

Rawlinson and Jasper Maher each booted two goals for the Double Blues, who had climbed from fourth spot to the last game of the year.

Re: SANFLW Season 2024

2024 SANFL U16 Girls Squad Released

Selectors have finalised a 30-player SA U16 Girls squad to contest the 2024 AFL U16 Girls National Championships in April.

To be coached by reigning championship-winning mentor Bek McMahon, the Croweaters will play two matches on home soil – against Victoria Metro and Western Australia – as they attempt to defend their crown.

Game 1 will be played at Prospect Oval against the Big V as part of the Gather Round festivities from April 6-7 while Game 2 against the Sandgropers will be at Thebarton Oval on the weekend of April 13-14.

SA’s side will feature the next wave of familiar surnames with the younger sisters of Teah Charlton (Emma Charlton), Laela Ebert (Neveah Ebert) and Molly Brooksby (Charlee Brooksby) all set to don the cherished red guernsey.

In the coaches box, McMahon will be assisted by an all-female coaching panel with Emma Sampson (outside midfielders) acting as lead assistant, alongside Brianna Arthur (inside midfielders), Talia Radan (defenders) and Kelly Barltrop (forwards).

”It was really important to me that we continue to grow off the back of what (SANFL State Coaching Manager) Dave (Reynolds) is doing in the field,” McMahon said.

”I really wanted an all-female panel which can add value to the players. This program is not just for the players but also for the staff and coaches to evolve and take the next steps in their careers as well.

”It’s really important we provide that platform for everybody.”
