Re: R9 - West v Norwood Post Match

Even though footy fans were rightly rolling their eyes at the scoreline to ¾ time, Norwood's inside 50 count was of a reasonably attacking side. They just couldn't kick the ball through the damn sticks to save themselves.
Yet I have a Westies supporter at work this morning, who went to Richmond last night, whining how Norwood played their typical "ultra defensive" shit brand of footy

Tell Mickan too stop playing 2 extra defenders behind the ball, bit hard for 4 against 2 most of the night. Especially helpful when Kmac owned Hardy all night, didn't leave much else going forward.
Norwoods inside 50 was good and if they had taken a few more chances early would of opened the game up and forced Mikans hand.
Walked out on the ground and it was very dewy and would of thought made the ball slippery to hold. This backed up by the number of simple dropped marks and poor disposal errors made by both teams. Bottom line poor game to watch for 3 quarters bar some very determined tackling by Norwood. Thankfully a couple of great goals by Wilson and Dawe in the last brought a shining light on the night.

Re: SANFL Club Finances

but i dont think he would deliberately lie.
He's a man of honesty and unblemished personal integrity, that's for sure.

well i agree with you on that. still think the crows should have gotten rid of him.

watched footy classified monday night and caro had the rumour that he was off to either brisbane or carlton to be ceo and he has the blessing of the afl to take either job

Very very strong rumour he is off to Brisbane. Heard this from 2 sources month ago, neither connected but should know what they are talking about. He's taken one for the board and club, came back so all looks good but in reality it's time to move on.

Re: Double header at Adelaide oval

Should go the whole hog and have 4 games there on a particular day starting around 11.30am and last game starting around 7.30pm, reckon it would be a huge winner, all 8 SANFL Clubs playing there on a particular day

Yes on a weekend of no AFL, turn it into a event. Bit like the soccer friday night make it a one off and promote it. Same as the AFL flash a members SANFL or Ade Oval one and get free public transport but not the whole hog of extra buses down King William st as the crowd ( hoping for 20,000 to 30,000 ) plus the different starting times wouldn't justify it.

In fact START the season with this one off 4 game event eg the week before the AFL starts.
SANFL teams 7th highest vs 8th then 5 v6, 3v4 and 1v2.

Have the Port v Ade game in a country town on the sunday. Thus if they need to give their players extra games if does affect the other SANFL teams if they stack their teams, could even promote the game a bit more eg Walker in Clare.
The only sticking point is a Sheffield Shield final if held in Ade and may be the weather being hot. (if it was a one off rule of having 4 or 5 on the bench )

Re: Double header at Adelaide oval

You do not like the idea of SANFL double headers??
I think it's a great idea to have all 4 games on the same day in an SANFL carnival as the season opener.
Weather would usually be good. All the other ideas put forward, membership and merchandising booths. Maybe even get a few legends from each club to turn out.

4 games in one day is too much for the average spectator but you'd think a lot would turn up for 2 or maybe 3.

Great opportunity to promote the SANFL and get some members signed up.

Well stated, it is exactly what I was thinking when I posted earlier. Well done to who thought up the idea of merchandising booths.

Re: Rd 17 Norwood v Port

2pm Sunday on 7mate

They were advertising south vs west on they Telly today.

Correct. Port v Norwood will be on radio, with LifeFM covering the clash...

The West v South game at Richmond is the Channel 7 game, on 7Mate...

If thats the case what a joke

so much for promoting SANFL on 7 first v second and its not on tv.
Instead a game with one team in the finals and the other smashed by 89 points by a team that should be on tv.
Forget the obvious basis I would generally be interested in watching a game between 1v2 no matter who was playing.

Re: HFL Central Division

Didn't Ironbank get relegated and while back, but can't remember off the top which year? Not certain if anyone was promoted.
From a vague memory, Ironbank came up in the mid 90's, were competitive for a bit but then struggled so went back to div 2, regrouped & came back in the 00's but not exactly sure of the year or who they replaced. Not sure what year or who Birdwood replaced when they came in, anyone know.
Ironbank were relegated in 98 based on poor facilities and not filing all junior sides. Came back up in 02 after 4 straight GFs in country. Nairne came into HFL Div 1 in place of Ironbank in 98 from RMFL.
That sounds better than my vague memory. Did you replace Nairne in 02. Do you know who Birdwood replaced when they came up & what year.
Hey cracka got me thinking so did a bit of research with some old final sirens.
Central 2005-6 only 9 teams, 2007 Birdwood came up to make 10
Country 2005 11 teams including Milang in A&B's they didn't win a game but had a better % than some of the later Callington teams and Blackwood's 2nd group
Country 2006 11 but Milang dropped out (Hear the Roar may be able to answer ) did they go to C's only? Kangarilla came back in from the SFL I think.
Country 2007 10 teams when Birdwood went up.
Country 2008-9 9 only when Blackwood dropped out.
Country 2010-12 10 when Sedan Cambrai came in
Central 2011 Birdwood out TV in
Country 2013-14 9 when Callington dropped out.
Central 2014 Mt Lofty out Echunga in
2015 who knows?? Regardless how it plays out because of lack of juniors coming thro in the smaller clubs and other reasons like trying to stay competitive could see in 5 to 10 years time one Div only with 12-14 clubs and possibly a couple in a C grade type comp. This from back in the 70's when there were 3 and even for 2 years 4 zones and 25 plus clubs not including the likes of Blackwood and Ironbank. Sad to see so many towns without their own individual clubs now days. In saying that we aren't the only League with this problem.

Re: HFL C Grade discussion

Hey HTR just noticed Milang played in the Country Div back in 2005 A & B's but not in 2006, did you drop straight back into C's in 06? How are things shaping up for 2015 for the Panthers? Still C's and is there a future with A&B's again in a year or 2?

From memory Milang went into recess and didn't field any sides for a few years. Had a mate playing there at the time.

Milang went into recess for 4-5 years after 2005. We had struggled incredibly hard to keep our heads above water by fielding As and Bs but realised we couldn't keep this up indefinitely. Yet we had a core group of administrators and players with passion who genuinely believed in Country footy. We all kept in touch and when the idea of Cs was floated in 2010, we all re-grouped without delay.

As for the future: there are many aspects to take into account. At this time juniors are not feasible due to our catchment area and the interest of bigger clubs such as Strath. As and Bs are more likely, but we have to be realistic and would need an active senior player list of around 50 at the outside. Until we have this, we need to live within our means and remain in Cs. We feel there is a place for us and intend to keep a thriving, healthy and pro-active club where players and families want to be. This will ensure we are ready to take a step up when the time is right.

Great to see the club reform and slowly take things step by step. All the best for 2015

Re: Ch9 AFL Division 7 - 2015

I was running back through the history of football at Houghton.

In 1945, Houghton, Hope Valley, TTG & Paracombe had a combined team that played in the Torrens Valley FL. They defeated Gumeracha in the Grand Final.

Bit more history for you Q, although I know the current Houghton club don't share the same history.
1921 TVFA formed with a meeting on May 13th with G Newman being delegate for Houghton. They finished top with 18 points at the end of the minor round but lost their semi final to Birdwood. With the challenge rule they played Gumeracha and won the premiership. Houghton made the finals in 26, 27, 28 & 29 but no premiership. They withdrew from the association in 31. They re entered in 37 and beat Williamstown (now Barossa Dist ) in the G/F but Williamstown beat them in 38. In 39 Houghton drew then beat Mt Pleasant in the G/F replay plus C Greening 38 and their capt Jack Gillard 39 won the Mail Medals. With WW2 no football was played until 46 with Houghton losing the 1st semi final. In 48 Houghton 10-14 beat Lobethal 9-7 and 49 Gumeracha 12-16 Houghton 12-11 to win the premierships. Alas no further mention was made of Houghton thro to 66.
TTG joined in 1922 (not certain how long they stayed ) and Hope Valley in 1924 applied but were refused.
All in info comes from a series of articles I found in "The Mt Barker Courier" newspaper in 1966 by Trevor Graeber a long time footy reporter for that paper. Sorry no mention of the above game you mentioned so can't confirm or deny.

From the Advertiser 24 june 1905

Re: HFL Country Division

These last few posts remind me of a trainspotting quote "It's easy to be philosophical when some other poor c8nt gots shite for blood"
Another no win situation for the HFL. Everyone (mostly from outside the HFL) bags us for not doing anything about Callington, now when some suggest what's probably best for a club heading in the same direction, we get bagged.

Yes to the Callington situation was awkward and could of been handled better, but the final decision rests with the club (then the league acts on that decision) and only they know if it was a better option to continue, disband or go to C grade. From memory they did have a colts team so made it slightly different.
Unfortunately for S/C it's not only the club but the entire area around them that is struggling. Over recent time Morgan and Cadell amalgamated but now disbanded, Robertstown amalgamated with Eudunda ( I think), Ramco moved to the Riverland independent and this year BSR have disbanded.
I wish S/C all the best in their endeavours to keep their club alive, the same as Milang. (I have great respect for them regrouping as a club, see comments in the C grade thread) Also can see the frustration from other Country div clubs re the juniors as it is becoming a massive problem for this div. Simply put juniors equals the ability to replenish playing stocks for the future, combine this with them having to play at different ovals kills the social aspect of a town coming together for the day is one of numerous other negatives to this situation. It is always worrying when a club needs to buy in players to help them fill grades as it means they are in trouble for their future.
How to solve this? One suggestion is to improve the C grade (even change the name to Country div II, it sounds better than c grade) and make it better competition, with more exposure ( Very little is written in either the Courier or the Final Siren about the comp, perhaps print a brief game commentary, scores and table under its own banner ) and sub committee or at least one person to oversee the running of it to give guidance and direction, look at bringing in new teams or strengthening the current ones with perhaps clubs combining even if for one year to have a strong team playing number wise and thus no forfeits. Look for sponsorship. Times for games, ask clubs for their best options and have a flexible schedule. If necessary in the future bring in a colts comp, again be flexible with the age limit each year may be u/15 one year u/16 the next.
As in the future other clubs may have the same problems as Milang, Callington or S/C, but if they have a meaningful competition to play in gives them an option for their club to survive and or regroup and step back up into the Country div at some point.

Re: HFL C Grade discussion

With the name change this season could a mod perhaps change the name of the thread to Hills Division 3 (C grade)

With the new season starting next week a bit of very early history on C's in the HFL.

When the league was formed in 1967 so was the first C grade team. Heathfield Aldgate United had A&B's in the Central but fielded a third side in the Southern B grade as not all of the Southern clubs fielded A&B's.
In 69 they were joined by Uraidla doing exactly the same. 1970 with the Northern Zone having B grade (16 a side) for the first time Uraidla played in this grade as Mt Torrens didn't field a B grade.
In 72 the league moved to 4 zones and Uraidla moved to Zone 4 B grade as Macclesfield didn't field a B grade and Heathfield Aldgate to Zone 3 B grade as Milang didn't field a B grade.
73 Heathfield Aldgate and Lobethal ( fielding a 3rd side for the first time ) joined Uraidla in Zone 4 B grade.
74 the league went back to 3 zones for A&B's and colts Zone 1 for Central clubs, 2 for Northern clubs, Zone 3 for Southern clubs. Like this year with Division 3 they kept Zone 4 ( also went under the name of B2 as well ) for 5 of 6 Central clubs - Heathfield Aldgate, Uraidla, Lobethal, Onka Valley, Stirling (Mt Barker being the club that didn't) and a stand alone 1 team club in Sedan Cambrai making the 6th side in the first proper competition for C grade teams. Hope for Milang as Sedan Cambrai went on to win the Premiership undefeated with a 12-11 to 5-4 victory in the G/F over Heathfield Aldgate.
That's where my research ends for the time being, ( I believe the B2 comp continued on in 75 and a C grade comp has been apart of the HFL most years since ) so if any one can add to this please do so.

Re: R13: Norwood v Port - Saturday 11 July @ Norwood

Hilarious when the kids in the southern stand starting chanting 'power' in the final quarter. Best win this year, well done boys!!
why is that funny? They are the power!

No its not funny just pathetic. **** off the tradition, Magpie and the prison bar ( plus stop trying to wear it in the AFL ) then call them the powerless. No love for Port but respect especially for players like, Phillips, Ebert, Williams etc. Wonder how they would feel? Morons wearing power to a MAGPIE game and kids chanting, there goes the past. As for crowds well last years G/F normally would of been a full house, but about 20,000 missing Magpies. ( If cows v port G/F, could play it on Adelaide no 2 oval for all the care factor. )
Feel sorry for the traditional black and white supporters as they seem to be dying off. Sad because Port helped make the SANFL such a wonderful and respected competition.

Re: HFL Division 3 (C grade)

Any scores from the semi finals today?

Yo there YOPK! Apologies for being so vacant on this site all year. Have had repeated log-in issues from a new device.

Milang over Ironbank by 4 goals yesterday. The margin was as wide as 8 goals for the Panthers with Ironbank failing to score a goal for nearly 2 quarters. Ironbank were assisted by plenty of hot wind from an assembled and uniformed Blackwood side behind the fence. Good to know they'd rather not play us.

So the Mighty Milang Panthers play Blackwood at Blackwood's home ground (funny that!) in the Grand Final on Friday night, Aug 21st. under lights (funny that too!).

We will go into the game fielding a team full of lads who play for the jumper, who do it for nothing and who don't have B's and A's to stack from.

GO PANTHERS! If you believe in genuine C's, be there for $2 on Aug. 21st and support real C grade footy!

HTR well done good to see Milang in the G/F all the best.

Re: HFL Division 3 (C grade)

There seems to be a ludicrous situation in progress regarding the location of the Div 3 Grand Final this weekend.

Blackwood had been scheduled to host the event all year. Not a level playing field for the other participants given their power, but we were ready for it and accepted it. Needless to say, we had a lot of support from everywhere to overturn a BW home final but hadn't planned on playing anywhere else.

Then Saturday we were notified that the venue had changed and that we (Milang) would be hosting. We were obviously thrilled and began to gather the necessary support personnel. 24 hours later we are told that Blackwood want the GF back and are fighting to the finish to get it.

Cracka, you seem in the know. Wondering if you can enlighten as to why the venue changed to Pantherland in the first place, and then changed again?

What a load of shyte for us to deal with in GF week. Might be a bit a fun for Blackwood but it's a big few days for our Club and we'd like a fair go. And HFL politics aside, any reasonable person would have to wonder why a Grand Final is scheduled at a competing club's home ground, when that ground is already under water and steady rain is predicted for Thursday and Friday?

Any reason it can't be played at a neutral venue eg Ironbank or Mt Lofty? Neither being used this weekend? Are they in better condition?

Re: HFL Division 1 (Central)

Apart from Bridgewater Callington (which geographically seems an odd combination, but I suppose so does Mt Torrens and Mt Pleasant with Birdwood in the middle ?) When was the last merger of clubs in the Hills? Is there not the opportunity to bring two towns together? Maccie/Meadows, Kangarilla-ironbank, Gum/Birdwood? I read an article on Eudunda Robertstown merger a while back and they are two dying towns but seem pretty competitive against the thriving Clare area? Would that not work in the Hills? Or is it fear of lost identity and pride getting in the way?
I'm thinking the last real merger (Uraidla/Eastern Ranges was more of a takeover) before Torrens Valley was Lenswood Ranges & Ashton forming Eastern Ranges in the 80's. Before that I reckon it was Heathfield/Aldgate United & Stirling to form Mt Lofty???

The Lenswood/Ashton merge was a long time ago. I recall playing footy at both those grounds, against the then local teams. The fog was always an issue at Ashton. Recall playing Eastern Ranges at Lenswood one day. Our mob kicked 40 goals, and the locals kicked about 25.... high scoring ground!

What year was the merger Cracka?
I think it was 83 when all clubs (14 or 15) played in 1 big comp. Pretty sure that was the least amount of clubs in the HFL in any 1 season.

For anyone interested the most was in 1972 with 26 clubs having an A and/or B grade plus Palmer had just a B grade.

I can remember in Mini colts playing Lenswood Ranges at Lenswood & then later playing against Eastern Ranges at both Ashton & Lenswood. Ashton had pretty good facilities from what I remember, think its now a soccer club using it.

Yes it was 83 for Ashton/Lenswood
83 was the only year in HFL history that all teams played in the one div. Uraidla, Hahndorf, Lobethal, Mt Barker, Onka Valley, Echunga, Pleasant Valley, Mt Torrens/Cambrai, Kersbrook, Gumeracha, Birdwood, Eastern Rangers, Nairne/Bremer, Bridgewater, Macclesfield. 15 in total
other mergers not mentioned Mt Torrens/Cambrai in 75 to 86, Woodside Army/Nairne paired up in 77&78 with Army playing A's and Nairne B's, Nairne/Bremer in 79 and Heathfield Aldgate United/Stirling end of 78 to form Mt Lofty.
yes 27 clubs in 72-3 when the only time the league ran 4 zones.

Re: Adelaide Footy League D7 - 2017

Thanks for those facts, those of us at the club wouldn't have known all that, ill just ring Mel and let her know we may as well
close up.

Ah don't have a whinge, no good hiding from the facts and you know it wasn't intended to disrespect your club - I just don't understand how some one can say you were "Largely competitive" when clearly, statistically speaking you were not.

Plus those facts were not for you, they were for him.

I've no doubt HFC will be more than competitive in 2018, your best 21 is pretty good, especially if Cam is fit in the ruck for most the year, and i have no doubt the new coach will bring some players to add to the depth. Next year looks bright for the Raiders... but it doesn't change this years results.

Totally agree about this year, cant change the facts on that at all and all we can do is improve. Ill let other blokes judged what happened in 1948 and how that has a bearing on what happens next year.
As for the new coach bringing players, as pointed out by a poster at least they will be used to the 100 point losses lol

Actually the previous edition of the Houghton club won the Torrens Valley Football Association grand final 10-14 to Lobethal 9-7.
Sorry Informer not taking the piss, know what what you are alluding too but had to look up 1948 results and that is the truth.

Re: Preliminary Final

I don't understand all the interchange protocols but I hope someone can explain how
1. North did not know the status of one of its injured player. Was actually on the ground.
2. the interchange steward at the end of 3/4 time does not know who is on/off
3.The guy with the magnets on the North bench does not realise an extra player is on.

4. The player and team mates around don't realise.

Carr said it wasnt tropiano who supposedly didnt read the board, he was meant to be on. So they knew he wasnt down getting treatment or being tested, as discussed by some.

I thought the below from the judge was interesting;
"Their various explanations as to how this
came about were unsatisfactory and confusing; however, I find that the decision that they indulged in was
not deliberate."

A little bit of double standards here (not necessarily directed at you here)

But everyone is crying that in this day and age the game is far too fast and busy for a captain to be expected to see a 19th man on the field to report to the ump so why should a player or any other person on the sideline notice if they're busy trying to coach the game?

Lets all think about that.

I reckon one change will be the officials giving an all clear at the start of each quarter regarding an accounting for the 3 players not on the field

I think that alone would solve this ever happening again. It seems really obvious in hindsight and would be unnecessary 999 times out of 1,000.

But clearly here there’s been an Uber blunder with an obvious thing completely left up to the team to police itself.

Was thinking along similar lines Hondo wondering who was responsible for identifying the 3 players - club or interchange steward?

Looking for solutions make it the club's responsibility to inform the steward of the 3 players before the start of each quarter. If they can't after a set amount of time, get the 4th umpire to play a free to their opposition to start the quarter from the centre circle or if it was discovered at 19 were on the field then a count would occur, it would only happen once and clubs would be quick to comply. As well as the captain making the call perhaps if the steward realises a team has 19 on the field at any stage during the match he could get the 4th umpire to call for a count. Finally if it wasn't identified there were 19 on the field until after a game had finished, set a ruling of a goal per minute. ie up to 60 seconds 1 goal for the opposition, 61 to 2 mins = 2 goals, 2.01 to 3 mins = 3 goals etc. It makes for a quick resolution to the matter to adjust one teams score and if it changes the result of the game so be it. Certainly clubs would act in great haste to remove any extra player.

1926 moved to chocolate and blue, 1947 first wore double blue
1st premiership was Torrens Valley B grade 1931 - 16-24 defeated Onkaparinga 8-13.
1948 merged with Chain of Ponds but continued on in double blue.
1971 lost grand final to Pleasant Valley 10-11 to 9-12 but certainly defeated Birdwood in 1972 - 14-9 to 11-17.

In case people are wondering some of that info straight from the old Torrens Valley Association minute books.

Re: Adelaide Hills Cricket (HCA, TVCA & A&EH)

Is there a bit of a drop in the number of teams nominated this year in the HCA?
No A4 grade

Yeah, 25 teams nominated this season, down from 27 (Basket Range and Eastern Ranges both down to 1 side). Only 4 clubs had an A4 last year, so I guess it was scrapped.

As a reference point, it seems participation peaked 2015/16, with 37 team nominations (which included 4 from Happy Valley and 1 from Clapham).

Going back into mid to late 80's from memory the clubs and number of teams they had were
Aldgate 3/4, Stirling 3, Basket Range 2, Uraidla 3, Hahndorf 3, Meadows 3, Happy Valley 3, Aberfoyle Park 2, Mylor 1/2, Bridgewater 3, Mt Lofty 3, Scott Creek 2, Iron Bank/Cherry Gardens 2/3, Lenswood Rangers 3, Onkaparinga 3, Clarendon 2.
Think all 4 grades had 10 teams.
The clubs and numbers varied over those years and obviously some clubs have moved on or don't exist any more.

Re: Great Southern Football League

And why should cricket assist Dutchy. Do you think football would assist cricket if COVID-19 impacts commenced in September instead of March.

Why wouldn't they? most communities have goodwill between sporting clubs.

Doesn't mean they have to push back their season, just work with footy to leave 3-4 ovals in each league to be used in October, the other ovals can still be used for cricket. Why couldn't it work? Don't think you understand that summer/winter tenancy politics that sometimes arises between community groups. Some people within one group sees the other as a stain on their right to use the shared facility even 'out of season' to them there is no out of season.

Might not happen at all facilities but it would be more prevalent than many would realise until they get involved in the inner sanctum and have to communicate to the other group regularly. Hopefully when discussions begin on starting the current in season sport the other is consulted on what us going on other wise things could get nasty for some clubs on both sides of the fence.

Nah Ive never been involved

Would only need the respective cricket associations to agree to leave 2 ovals for footy use until end of October, that would still leave up to 8 ovals for cricket, add in that most cricket associations have grounds that are solely cricket, off the top of my head Port Elliott, Ashbourne, Wistow, Aldgate, Mylor, Basket Range, Heathfield HS, Meadows no. 2 & there are 3 Coromandel Valley ovals.

Other ovals - Ashton, Lenswood, Forest Range, Finniss, Stirling, Palmer, Springton, Eden Valley, Clarendon, Mt Pleasant or Mt Torrens and most likely Milang could be used.
