Re: 2021 Melb Cup Day Punters Club

G'day lads,

21 of 23 Members all paid up, cheers for jumping on that early!

Once the fields for Saturday are released I'll randomly assign a Punter for each race ... We're looking at 23 x $50 bets and $230 to put toward exotics - Please refer to the first post in this thread which now has a Poll for how we invest on the exotics, which will be "majority" rules based.

Any other questions just sing out.

Cheers,
JK

Re: Things that you rate!

Ok, I’ll admit I was very pessimistic about the Chicken Chef chips despite the hype & publicity over the last 24 hours not to mention the high recommendations from LM, Days & Pag on here.
I couldn’t get near the joint, had to park out the front of Vili’s. I Enter the shop & there are 18 people eating/waiting for their order. In the 8 mins I waited another 23 people came in and ordered. The place was heaving.
Grab my order & almost break into a run back to the van in anticipation. I am not let down. These are THE BEST CHIPS I have ever had - period. Crunchy on the outside, fluffy in the middle - cooked to perfection. The hot dog I had was spot on too. Got halfway through the chips & felt full, finished them anyway. My mouth loves me, my guts hates me. Food coma ominous. Worth it.

Yep, imho nothing comes close. Chicken Shop opposite Barnacle Bills at Woodville used to have exact same type but a few years back changed them (to a run of the mill variety most places have). I've never recovered from it.

Wasn’t that the original chicken chef shop?
I’m going back 20 + years

Yeah they were part of the same group, but the Woodville one eventually changed name to Chicken Plaza I think, because they said the other mob wanted too much money for them to use the name. Kept menu items and chips exactly the same though. Completely different owners bought the place a few years back now.

Former Australian Off Spinner Ashley Mallett has passed away aged 76.

A kind and gentle man, generous with his time.

A wordsmith of note. Rowdy was a good friend of my late father, and spoke at Dad’s funeral.

RIP.

Never heard a bad word spoken about Rowdy. Bit before my time as a player, but fond memories growing up of him calling SA shield games. RIP

2021 Melbourne Cup Competition

That time of the year lads where the time honoured JK Cup is up for grabs ... Reminder of details below and entry is free (because all you win is bragging rights lol).

Select ONE runner in all 10 races on Cup day. Points are earned based on the dividend (we’ll use the UBET Tote prices for this). If your horse runs 2nd or 3rd the place div is your score for that race, if it wins you get the win AND place Div combined as your score.

For example, if you select 4. Deep Point in the first and it jumps at say $6 and $2.25 .. if it runs 2nd or 3rd you score 2.25 for that race, if it wins you score 6 + 2.25 = 8.25 for that race.

In the event your horse is scratched you will be assigned the #1 horse as a sub (if #1 is scratched then #2. If #2 is scratched then #3 and so on).

The punter with the highest accumulative score after all 10 races becomes the SAFooty Cup Day champion and wins the priceless prize of 12 months of bragging rights ;)

For those interested, give us your 10 selections BEFORE the commencement of Race 1 ... Good luck girls and boys!!

Having worked there for a short period of time, I learnt pretty quickly by the way they do business that I wouldn't have my money with them. In fact, I steer people away from them when selecting a credit union.

Was at work after a gym session, I've been a bit disciplined since Melbourne Cup Day.

From Derby Day to Stakes Day, 2 x 4am and 2 x 6am finishes, gonna take all of this week to feel "normal" again. Way too old for this shit.

Re: Season 2022 Player Movements

All the other clubs picking up AFL players or those that have been on an AFL list
Nietschke, Melbourne,
Reeves, Gold Coast,
Beuchner, captain of Clarence,
McCormack, Frankston in the VFL,
the lad from The Riverina is a bit of an unknown but he's young & a big bloke & we desperately need big blokes,
pretty good recruiting I would say (so far)
The AFL isn't the be all and end all you know,
didn't work for Norwood,
didn't work for South,

Phillips, McGuiness. Newton, Cachia, Batsanis etc might suggest otherwise. That said, I don't disagree with your point. A lot of fringe AFL players don't amount to much at State League level, and plenty of players from country leagues or other state leagues have and will succeed at SANFL level.

I'm referring to more recent years,

As always it's a mixture of several components. Clubs like yours and mine in recent seasons have had to start all over again and the first step is building that foundation that can grow together, adding established talent that are the right fit along the way where possible.

Re: I need to know....

What's you biggest find or loss? Money-wise.

It was a discussion at work yesterday, I've neve lost a big clump of money but I'm constantly losing notes.

A memorable one was one afternoon I grabbed a jacket to go to the pub with, it was the first coldish day of the season so I hadn't worn it for a good 8 months, I was sitting on the train and felt something in the inside pocket and there was $300 bucks there.

I must've been pretty pissed last time I wore it.

Went to the casino around new years about 10 year ago. Had a good night on the Blackjack table and come home with about $2k. A month later I opened the zipped part of my Wallet and found 10 x hundys all nicely paper-clipped together. Thinking there was nothing in it Id left my wallet just casually lying around many times without realising. Was one of the best bonuses I've experienced lol
Dear me!!!! What did the wife say about the $300 you found?

She was really impressed with my $100 collect ;)

Re: I need to know....

About 20 years ago (single & no kids) I was washing the bedding when I felt something in one the pillow cases. It was a small money bag that the banks used for silver coins, inside it was a TAB ticket from the previous Thursday night & $670 in cash, a Glock, safety deposit key and 3 different passports. I’d had $50 on something in the last at Richmond dogs that got up. Scrawled in drunken writing on the ticket was a note I’d left myself saying “See, I told you you wouldn’t remember”…

I've done similar, where if I'm winning I decide to put chips in a different pocket or give to a friend so I don't spend it - few times i've woken up the next day and either found chips stashed in inside pockets, or had mates call me telling me they're holding xx amount for me

Re: Season 2022 Player Movements

"The best player in the comp massive out if St Kilda take him (JH)."

This was not the news I wanted for Xmas. Good luck to JH if that's what he wants, I suppose, but it would be a terrible waste if he ends up being a backup to a backup in the St Kilda VFL side . I hope his brother can talk to him about being a fringe AFL player.

Yep it stings mate, watching your boys clamp us in the Quali where we were crying out for a key forward who can take a contested mark, and knowing Jackson Callow taken in the MSD was just sitting around in Melbourne gathering dust, wasn't an easy pill to swallow. Rivalries aside I hope JH gets a (decent) crack at AFL because I've always rated him and enjoyed watching him play. But if an AFL club isn't going to give him a genuine opportunity then I hope he stays here and we can see him perform on a weekly basis.

Do you mean he could be a shandy player?
Yes. Apparently plays a lot like number 3 for the West Coast, but with an effervescent personality. If the Power recruit him he'll be a portergaff.

Re: Coronavirus (Covid19)

Who else is a little nervous waiting for the SMS from SA Health after the last lot of sites have been revealed?

It's changed how my family is going out, just doing essential things and no meandering. Don't want to have to isolate for Christmas. I'm hoping to not get caught out by flying and being in wrong place at wrong time.

I can see why people are not QR code checking though, don't want to be forced to isolate. Tricky situation. The next week will be interesting to see how numbers progress.

Even the kids are thinking like this now, they always go to Ramsgate Xmas Eve, get there before noon to get in, huge day/night.

Probably not going now as don't want to risk getting stuck in isolation for Xmas, giving it to elderly grand parents on Xmas Day, etc.

Very mature approach - not great for businesses though with so many thinking along similar lines.

If the Rammy is as good on Christmas Eve as it was back in the day, it's worth the risk ;)

Re: Swimming Pool

The thing I wanted to mention here is the shocking communication between the pool companies and the customers. We've been left battling to work through the site management. Now, to be fair, our site manager from the pool company has been isolated and since tested positive for Covid but we haven't had any communication from him at all.

I think the thing that lacks from a customer perspective is the communication and understanding of what steps are involved in putting a pool in. It's a hefty investment, worthy of some communication I would've thought!

That was pretty much our experience too. "Project Manager" was onsite once, before any work was begun. Never saw or heard from him again.
Any communication came from the office girls, scheduling and such. This info was often wrong and the "wrong" was often my fault apparently.
Contractors were all good though.

We went through a mob called Rainwise and must admit didn't have any of these issues (thankfully). Salesman was excellent to deal with and never dodged our calls, even after the installation was complete and we'd paid them. We've had a coupla issues over the years, but best thing we ever did was f*** the cartridge filter off and replace with a Sand Filter. We have a great Pool Maintenance bloke who put us onto an excellent device for cleaning the pool and he comes in once a month ($99) and does he thing. Haven't had to spend any time on maintaining it now since the filter swap over.

Re: Things that give you the sh1ts

I disengage from the Australia Day debate, I don't want to feel guilty celebrating a day that was always a special one growing up.

I now use it to catch up on some crap around the house, it has lost it's appeal and prestige.

I don't have the answer.

Yep, Im in this same boat. Was all over it when younger without realising the distress it causes other people. Now it feels like trying to celebrate at a party while friends are mourning at a funeral.

Also I might add, a bit like Valentines Day - Dont feel the need for 1 special day to celebrate how lucky we are to live here, I love my country everyday as Im sure most do.

I dont have the answer (but have appreciated the suggestions within this topic), but am all for shifting the date if it means ALL Australians can celebrate it.

Took my youngest to yesterday’s game, and what a cracker it was. Not sure how but he’s a pretty passionate Cats supporter and he enjoyed the gentle ribbing from all my Port supporting mates. He’s a tinny little bugger who predicted pre-match a Cats victory by 11 points, so I took them 11/12 at $26 on Sportsbet, then backed the Cats at 3/4 time :D :partyman: Great father-so. Day that both of us thoroughly enjoyed.

Valiant effort from Port who played with plenty of passion, result obviously showed there wasn’t much between the sides on the day, Cats with a few more correct decisions and executions in hot moments maybe the difference.
