Re: WEIGHT LOSS + the challenge

I've been back on the weight loss kick for about 5/6 weeks now.

Getting some results.

Reduced Alcohol intake. I don't like it much, but my weight gain over the past 5 years, has been more about what I drink, than what I eat. I have switched to low cal beers. Can't hurt.

Portion control. Mrs C is on board too. Think it took her a few weeks to start cooking less.

Increased exercise. Gym sessions up from 1 time a week to 3 times. Heading back to Park run this Sat (now that old farts cricket is done) will walk/jog the 5 ks, then head to gym.

Down 4.5 kg's in that time.

The aim is to get back under 100KG. Just 9 more "KG Cunningham's" to go. Looking forward to fitting into some shirts that I have not worn in a few years time..... The buttons were under more pressure than Ken Hinkley!

Update - after 8 weeks.

Tale of the Scale

Week 0 = 113.3KG
Week 1 = 111.8KG
Week 2 = 111.5KG
Week 3 = 110.3KG
Week 4 = 110.4KG - Weird how I lost nothing in this week.
Week 5 = 109.9KG
Week 6 = 108.7KG
Week 7 = 108.0KG
Week 8 = 107.9KG - Old Boys Cricket Trip in here, way to many beers
Week 9 = 106.8KG

So 6.5KG's gone, with about the same amount to go to get back under the ton!

Further progress update:-

Week 10 = 105.8KG
Week 11 = 105.5KG
Week 12 = 105.5KG
Week 13 = 104.9KG
Week 14 = 104.5KG
Week 15 = 104.3KG
Week 16 = 103.9KG
Week 17 = 103.5KG

It’s getting harder, and my losses are smaller. That said, happy I’ve stuck with it. As good as 10KG off, which was goal #1.

5 weeks til I’m on a plane to Bali. Hope my weight begins with a 9 by then!

Re: AFL 2025

A real concern for Jeremy McGovern, with West Coast nominating him for consultation with an AFL concussion panel and admitting retirement is a possibility.

The star defender remains in the concussion protocols after his latest knock in Round 8 and has struggled to recover.

"We are awaiting a date for the panel to convene and assess Jeremy and there are a range of outcomes that could result from their report.

"These may include personalised treatment or rehab plans, an extension of the return-to-play timeframe, recommendations for further tests or specialist referrals, or retirement on medical grounds."

Re: Your poison of choice?

All the training comes together at Beer and BBQ tomorrow night.

I'm thinking ribs, dark ales and maybe an Old Fashioned to round out the frothy, frosty night.

I'm cranking the smoker on Sunday for a surprise birthday for my estranged son.

2 briskets, 5 sets of shorties, 1.5 kg of pork belly diced into burnt ends in a plum rub and a smoked pineapple.

I have a 2.5kg boneless lamb that I might weberise or watch spin around on a spit while I'm at it, or grab a couple of lamb shoulders to smoke too.

I'll start on the Peroni's then move on to a bottle of Aviation Gin that I have then move on to a nice drop of cab sav to see me out.

He's 27 but I'll get a number 3 candle for his cake given that it's the 3rd birthday he's had since we've caught up.

8th of July 2022 the hole in my heart was filled.

Glad to hear he's no longer estranged, mate.

Must be something in the air, I'm planning a lamb in the weber/cab sav or merlot night on Sunday .

Re: Bali/Phuket

Some of my thoughts/observations on Bali.

Accommodation in Legian. 4.5 Star (apparently), good location, rooms a little tired to be fair. We were up on the 3rd floor. Safe to say, didn't miss going to the gym much, was up & down the stairs so much, I was getting my workout in. While I am loathe to compare per se Bali to Thailand, it's kind of inevitable. Accommodation wise, in my view, yet get a bit more for your $ in Thailand.

Food & Drink, plentiful, and well sampled. Well priced too. We ate in Restaurant's in the main, as opposed to bars. That said a few bar lunches went down well. Reckon my Bro in law had Nasi Goreng every day between lunch & dinner. Decent coffee joints abound. $2.50 a cappuccino doesn't hurt the pocket.

Tour - We did one. It was ok, but stuff me the traffic in Bali is insane. I am not talking about the lack of road rules, more so the road infrastructure is simply inadequate to handle the amount of vehicles.

Footpaths - Better than Thailand, in Bali, they actually exist!

Beach Sunsets - Enjoyable, $4 beers, sit back & chill..... other than the non stop touts peddling their wears...

Volcano - Other than seeing it in my news feed, you wouldn't have known it was happening in Legian. Reading the posts about flight cancellations, while sitting on the beach, watching a plane come in every 5 minutes made me chuckle.

Weather - Rained once in our 8 days, and that was for about 15 minutes while we were eating. Understand this week in Bali, has been almost non stop rain. We timed that well...Hot when the sun was out, but for much of our time there was some cloud about that cooled things off.

Shopping - Not my go, Mrs C didn't miss though. Sister in Law, stuff me.... she was shopping for cushions....in Bali, why, just why? I managed to pick up a few singlets. An Indiana Pacers one (then Haliburton tears the Achilles 2 days later) and the mandatory Bintang one. Reckon they search your bags when you leave, if you don't have one onboard they send you back to the airport gift shop.

Pi55ed Aussies. Pretty well everywhere. One evening, we were sitting in a restaurant, adjacent to the beach. About 9pm a group of well hydrated Aussies appear from their sunset drinks. Among them a middle aged lady (mid 50's), the kids (also pi55ed) think it's a great idea to get "gran" a moto bike back to the resort. What unfolded from there was entertaining to say the least. First she hands her entire purse to the rider.... he says no hands it back. She then pulls out some cash for the ride, hands it to him. He pockets it. Shen then hangs her handbag (full of god only knows what content) over the riders head. He says no, gives it back to her. Then she starts to line up how to get on the back of the bike. By this stage our fellow dinners have cottoned onto the situation and were all tuned in. Eventually she hitches up her dress (to the waist) showing off her G banger.... and climbs aboard. The rider hands her a helmet, which she struggles with. As the rider pulls away from the curb with his passenger, they receive a standing ovation from the dinners in the restaurant. Probably happens every night in Bali....

Will we go back? - Yes but not in the short term. Probably 3 or 4 years for another look. 8 days for us in Legian or Seminyak about right, but then I would move over to the other side, or to another location nearby - Lombok etc.

Week 23 = 101.5KG - Somehow didn't put on weight while on holiday. We did walk an awful lot though.

Re: I need to know....

Are fish and chips shops allowed to wrap food in newspaper or has that been outlawed?
It should be.

From an ink perspective (I work in the industry) news print inks, would not be considered "food grade" for direct food contact.

If its blank newsprint (paper) then yes ok.

Even inks used on the outer wrappers of chips/chocholate etc, need to comply with food grade standards, even though there is functional barrier (usually) silver foil (unprinted) in contact with the actual food.

Re: Daily Golf - Where you are playing and how you go

I made the move to "Malbin" near on 9 years ago now. During those 9 years I have probably averaged 6-10 rounds a year. Just playing here & there really. I believed I would hold off joining a golf club over here until I retired, to be certain I could play enough to justify the membership fees.

I had kept myself busy in the summer months with old fools cricket. At 59 now, and the only thing keeping me interested in cricket, was the thought of pulling on the Big V, in the over 60's carnival, made me realise, I was playing cricket for the wrong reasons. With the summer upon us, I have no enthusiasm at all to pull on the whites.

I have a number of golf clubs within a reasonable distance of my home to choose from, so I started the research in earnest over the past month or so.

A couple of private clubs (Northern, Rosanna & Heidelberg) all around the $2.5 to $3.5k per annum, and most with around the same in a joining fee to boot. All very nice clubs, with some great facilities (clubhouse, practice ranges etc). I played Rosanna a few years back, and it's a good track, they stuck the membership forms in front of me. I was very tempted!

Then there is a number of Semi Private clubs (Growling Frog, Club Mandalay & Hidden Valley). All around the $1,200 - $1,500K per annum, no joining fee (that I am aware of) and pretty good facilities. The practice area's at Growling Frog are particularly good. My knock on the "Frog"..... it's always blowing a ******* gale. It's a Links setup, but stuff me it's always insane the wind there. Mandaly can be much the same, but it has bugger all, in the way of a practice range.

So I have settled on Hidden Valley. It's a 35-minute drive up the Hume, heading North. 3 speed cameras to be aware of, so careful on the speed.

I have played the course probably 5-6 times now, & I bloody love it. The clubhouse is super impressive, and membership includes access to the gym (although I am a member of a Gym 500 meters from home) and to the indoor heated pool. Also included is bowls, tennis & pickle ball..... Not ready just yet (4 more years) is the opportunity to buy a home, that backs onto the actual course. Oh my glory filled days..... imagine driving your golf cart out the back gate, playing 18, then a few hours negotiating the 19th hole. Just drive the golf cart (hic) back home, through the course, and do it all again the next day!

So bugger it, Im not waiting to retire then join a club, I am doing it this bloody weekend.

1st card in for Handicap. Front 9 was dry, out in 43 with a double on 8. Greens slow, still recovering from coring.

Onto 10th tee some light drizzle. Pared 10, 11 & 12.

Then it really sent it down. Nothing worse than trying to keep everything dry when it’s coming in sideways!

Came home in 50, which was actually decent in the conditions.

Looking at the leader board only a couple of single figure blokes in front of me off the stick.

Playing next Sat and Mon… looking forward to getting a handicap back.

i think you might struggle a fraction next 2 rounds

and then you'll go BANG off a hcp of 20ish ;)

More than a fraction of struggle yesterday, in good conditions, I carded my worst score.

Pop my 3rd card in tomorrow.
