At least you admit it and don’t pretend otherwise.

Just change your name to the Power reserves(officially) and wear their guernseys and leave the Magpies to RIP.

So people wanting crows and port out be careful on what you wish for as it will happen soon and the SANFL will be worse for it all though crows and port will become better for it.

But the Crows were going to become better by having a team in the SANFL, now they will be better for being out of it????

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

The arguments are not strong in this one.

His main point, "Don't whinge about your club going broke if you don't support them (financially/attendance) anymore" has substance.

The point isn’t about our clubs going broke that hasn’t changed like it was suppose to. It’s about the integrity of comp.

North Adelaide have reported 11 profits in a row there fans are still pissed off about this.

We supporters still have memberships digital passes and support our clubs in other ways than just attending games.

So here we go One side gets into a grand final after playing 19 players for a period of time in a winning preliminary final and the other continues to wrought the salary cap with an unflinching care for the rules that apply to every other club. I wont be watching I wont be listening I might wash the car. SANFL is a joke and allows clubs like whorewood to get away with salary cap wroughts. Heres a direct quote from a club assistant " You wouldn't believe how many family members are employed by Norwood" Blatant abuse

Re: Preliminary Final

North have been found guilty of breaking the rules, they have been smashed over the knuckles with a wet lettuce.
So, this week if North are struggling against Norwood, they'll just run another player or two onto the ground during the game- if they get caught just another slap on the wrist,...
Yet another mind boggling decision from the sanfl...almost as puzzling as suspending 50k from the salary caps of 2 sanfl clubs who are doing it tough financially.

Re: Preliminary Final

Also interesting to note is that if you take the view that Allmond was the extra player (presumably because he came off to even up the numbers), then he didn't touch the ball whilst he was on the ground for the start of the last quarter, and only laid one tackle in the first minute.
That's irrelevant. He enabled another North player to touch the ball, influence the game etc. At any rate, there were probably several North players who didn't touch the ball in that period and several who had a lot of the ball and one who even kicked a goal. Would it have made a difference if they'd taken the goalscorer off?

It doesn't matter which player came off; it matters that they had 19. Clearly there's a significant advantage in having an extra man.

As Godden said, they couldn't work out where North were getting a loose man from and actually changed their tactics as a result and sent a loose man back themselves.

Additionally, being a man short makes it significantly harder to score. Although the momentum was with North, the Eagles may have missed out on an opportunity to score themselves during that period.

I think the right decision was made. As the judge said, reversing the result would arguably be a little too savage. However, there's no denying that North received a significant advantage for those four minutes.

Re: 2019 AFL mid season draft

So, from next year there is an AFL mid season draft. Teams can take SANFL players mid year.
Essentially, SANFL top players from the real clubs could end up playing for the Crows or Port SANFL teams mid year.

In theory, the SANFL could lose a dozen or so of its best players mid year.
Another nail in the coffin for the competition......... :(

From my understanding the ‘mid season draft’ is actually open from Dec to March so isn’t exactly the middle of the year, but any SANFL clubs will still be
a little disadvantaged just before the season starts..
Nup, it is mid season.
AFL clubs will be able to rookie draft players from December to March AND also midseason.

Rightio, I stand corrected then. As much as it sucks for the SANFL Clubs, I would never begrudge any player that takes up the offer of an AFL club. It’s every clubs job to develop players and have them get the best out of themselves. If things don’t work out, hopefully the environment of the SANFL club ensures they return to them. So I don’t mind the idea

Tired of this attitude .. Responsibility to develop players in preparedness to play at the highest level they can? For sure, but NOT at the expense of the club. Between seasons no drama. Putting 1 or 2 individuals ahead of the club will kill the club eventually - How long will people continue parting with their hard earned through membership, sponsorship or attendance when their reward for the club doing the right thing in development could destroy its entire season?

Re: SA 2019 Draft Watch

By Andrew Faulkner in the Austtralian
On Monday we’ll be reminded that the AFL is the VFL with the V turned upside down and furnished with a small ornamental crossbar.

Those of us in the states that are not Victoria will be put in our place. Again.

For the V, pardon, A-FL, is coming for your players.

For your star ruckman. Your centreman. Your centre-half-forward. The player your local club has groomed and nurtured and fostered. The player recruited with scarce money, only to be stolen mid-season, cruelling finals aspirations and breaking supporters’ hearts.

Stolen is not too harsh a word, because the local clubs get nothing in return.

The mid-season draft is open season on local football. About 15 players are expected to be selected on Monday in the first mid-season draft since 1993.

AFL talent ambassador Kevin Sheehan said on Melbourne radio this week losing a player mid-season was great for a local club’s “culture”.

“(It is) a little minor setback that you might lose one, but great for the culture of that club to be pushing your boys up to give them a chance,” Sheehan said.

Where to begin. Firstly, clubs such as Norwood, Glenelg, Claremont and Swan Districts aren’t lacking in the culture department. They could teach a few AFL franchises a thing or two about culture. But won’t someone think of the kiddies? All they ask is a chance!

Well, state clubs are proud when their players are drafted — in the draft proper. But not in the middle of the season.

South Adelaide expect to lose the SANFL’s leading ruckman, Michael Knoll. This, after South lost forward/ruckman Hayden McLean to Sydney as a “supplementary” recruit in March. And that, after they lost ruckman Keegan Brooksby, to West Coast as a “Pre-Season Supplemental Selection”.

As you can imagine, South Adelaide’s inventory of tall timber is starting to look a tad thin.

South fans shuffle their feet, hands in pockets, and mumble something about that just being the way of the world. Because South people are used to hardship. They haven’t won a premiership since 1964.

But there’s plenty to speak for them, such as ex-Port captain Warren Tredrea, who says the mid-season draft threatens the fabric of the WAFL, SANFL and even the VFL.

“Once again, the AFL has misread the room and got it terribly wrong,” Tredrea wrote in The Advertiser this week.

Norwood chief executive and former Western Bulldogs football manager James Fantasia says the AFL has acted in haste.

“This will have little or no impact on the AFL clubs … but the impact on the SANFL is enormous,” Fantasia says.

Fantasia said the jump from the second to the top tier was too big a leap for a player during a season. “To suggest that you can play a player from a state league, that he’s going to walk into an AFL side that same year, that’s pie in the sky stuff.”

Inaugural Adelaide coach Graham Cornes says AFL clubs are announcing “strategic retirements” so they can “ravage local leagues” on Monday.

“It should never have come to this,” Cornes wrote in The Advertiser. “In typical AFL fashion it has determined an outcome before considering the process or the impact.”

If the AFL needs more players, then expand the lists. And do it via the November draft, so everyone’s on a level playing field.

Again, local clubs are delighted when their players are taken in the draft proper.

My own club — and let that stand as a declaration of interest from a Sturt member — presently has 17 players on AFL lists. A full starting side bar one.

It’s not enough that the Double Blues gave the game attacking handball, Peter Motley and the widespread use of the checkside punt — oh, and a ruckman by the name of Brodie Grundy — we have to hand over more players in the middle of the season? What have you done with the others?

If all this isn’t bad enough, AFL clubs have admitted they won’t use the mid-season draft for its intended purpose; that is, recruiting a mature player to fill a gap created by an injury or a retirement. Instead clubs will take youngsters not yet ready for AFL, and develop them over more than the current season.

There are voices of dissent. Chris Scott, for example, is opposed to AFL clubs warehousing young players overlooked in the draft.

“I don’t think that was the intention, and it looks like that’s the way it might be used,” Scott told AFL 360 this week. “Stephen Wells, who I have an enormous amount of respect for, our list manager and recruiting manager, has been opposed to the idea for a long time on the basis that the art of list management is getting your team ready for the whole season.”

Was just about to write the same. Pretty much a lone, "active" voice in an SANFL role against the AFL centric system and the terrible bowing to the AFL to destroy our league. Wasn't afraid to voice his honest opinion which most often was reflective of the true SANFL supporter with the future of the SANFL his concern.
Yep, right on. Not only a great record, but has also hung on in the less successful years when others might’ve found the going too tough. Now there’s one less true SANFL voice in the comp, and it’ll be poorer for his retirement.

Roy's stance on the AFL was admired by all of us, and fittingly, will be brought up in his own tribute thread.

Last week at Elizabeth, AS we came off the ground after the little cup presentation, Joel Cross did not go to the South rooms but went straight around to the Centrals rooms where he was stopped from going in.

John Platten came to the door to see what he wanted

After telling John what he wanted, John escorted him in to offer his congratulations to Roy Laird his outstanding success and achievements.

Pity that did not happen out on the ground but I for one think it's great that Crossy recognised Roy for all that he has done, not only for Centrals but for being a voice against the fee ride that the AFL clubs get in our league.

An outstanding career as a player and coach comes to end this Saturday. His legacy is great and will surely become a club hall of fame legend.

Yep .. Early-Mid 2000's Victorian clubs and media were bemoaning the fact the Crows and Power had an advantage in development with their players in the SANFL. Not long after the AFL successfully leant on the SANFL to reduce the Salary Cap. Not long after that the AFL clubs successfully lobbied for their own reserves sides.

Completely understandable Crows and Port would want total control of their reserves players, but not sure how much benefit they've derived from it when the competition has weakened?

Re: Roy Laird’s last season coaching

He initiated the change of the predominantly white guernsey & socks . He went about changing perceptions & standards.

NO. Daryl Hicks implemented the white guernsey and socks. Kerley wanted to change the guernsey but wasn't able to, he did bring in better socks though. In fact when the company delivered the new socks they were incorrectly designed in that they were white in the bottom third. Management were just going to take thenm but Kerley made them send them back and made the company send the correct ones.

Daryl Hicks also implemented a better playing culture.

Sorry, you’ve misunderstood stood me.
My post meant to say that Kerley wanted to get rid of the white guernsey/socks.
Depends who you talk to I guess, but Centrals people involved with the club that I know told me firsthand that Kerley was the one who changed the club.

Kerleys name is never mentioned when Club Culture is discussed. He was nowhere as impactful as the Club had hoped for. Clearly semi-retired as a coach at that stage.

What a PRICK of a season, so glad it is finally over. Today's game typified the whole season, especially when the final quarter went 32 minutes and made us suffer as long as possible to the bitter end.

Perfect example of why there should be no AFL in the S.A.N.F.L..

End of football for the year as far as I'm concerned, zero interest in S.A.N.F.L. finals.

Channel 7 commentators very excited about the crows. I just don’t get it, this team (and Port) should win every game they play and are massive underachievers in the SANFL. Especially in the finals where they play home games against teams that get to train at the Oval once before the game. By the way, sucked in Norwood. You chose to sell your soul to the devil and now he’s pulling your pants down. That being said, I wouldn’t be sad if you come back and win because I still like seeing the crows get humiliated.
