Re: Where to for Glenelg

Give Glenelg the chance to turn it's situation around, hopefully when the time comes they can rejuvenate the board with some new blood. Talk of mergers is knee-jerk nonsense. The only way the comp can survive and remain relevant is to maintain the traditional clubs and work to get them financially stable in the long run.

Re: I need to know....

Righto, whilst suiting up for a wedding on the weekend, other members of the party found it quite humorous watching me put belt through the pants loopholes, prior to putting them on. Seems I was the only bloke in the room to do it this way .. Anyone else set the belt up before putting their strides on?
I'm with you, JK. Belt goes through first, then pants go on. The other ways sounds too finicky.

Re: Where to for Glenelg

So the actual blame for the AFL reserves in the SANFL & the ultimate downfall of the SANFL should all be put on the 6 clubs that voted yes & not the crows or power for wanting into the SANFL.
Sure. The 6 'yes' clubs do deserve the blame, because they ultimately voted for it. But the Crows aren’t blameless in this. To think that is to ignore the inequitable power balance that exists between the very popular and resource-heavy Crows and a collection of semi-amateur clubs struggling with identity and relevance, and who were ripe to be taken advantage of.

Don't forget the Crows were absolutely desperate to have a reserves side, all part of Brenton Sanderson's (remember him?) plan. They would've stopped at nothing to get what they want, because, well, they always do. They're the sporting darlings of a state that loves its sport. I have no doubt that if there was an Adelaide Crows political party people would seriously vote for it.

But I digress. The Crows wanted something bad and did whatever they could, behind the scenes, to get it.

I think some have said that even if the vote was unanimous against, the Crows still would've pulled out an ace and gotten their own way anyway. I’m not so sure. The Crows know the benefit of a warm and fuzzy positive public image, and would’ve never overturned the official vote. They wanted to earn the trust of the clubs, and also reinforce the impression that the SANFL clubs’ independent decision-making was the key to the vote. So they remained in the shadows and exerted their influence until they knew the majority vote would go their way.

It might appear as if the clubs are guilty of voting for the reserves sides, but in my mind they’re guilty of being hoodwinked by a bunch of charlatans. Yes, they ostensibly voted for it, but the Crows pulled the strings. Machiavelli would be proud.

Re: Where to for Glenelg

It still comes down to 6 clubs voted yes, regardless of being hoodwinked or taken advantage of, they voted yes. If as you say the crows would have done anything to get in then again it's the fault of the 6 SANFL clubs for not getting more from them, shit they're semi professional organisations themselves but what you're saying amounts to them being as amateur as a high school SRC.
To be sure, it certainly has been amateur hour/year/years at Prospect. I won't resile from that. One thing that disappoints me is that North, a club making money hand over fist, felt the need to cower at the future of an SANFL without the Crows and Power pumping them up.

But to reiterate, the local clubs were, perhaps for want of a better word, vulnerable and the Crows peddled a solution. The Crows are powerful and wield massive influence. It can be easy to forget this given their considerable lack of on-field success for nearly two decades. It's naive to say that it was simply the clubs' decision to vote and that's that.

The point for me is this: if the Crows really gave a stuff about the SANFL, the organization from which it was founded from, and which it conveniently relies on when they have talk about history, it wouldn't have threatened its viability by inserting a practice squad into it for its own purposes. It already had a method by which second string players got a run. They just got greedy.

Re: Memories of TV and Radio Coverage

Ian Day with his "stacks on the mill" reference, plus his call during a state game that ended in "What an absolute ball-tearer"!!
It seemed like four out of every five goals scored whilst Daisy was commentating were "brilliantly done".

And a decent second effort was met with "He butters up again.."

Just fantastic. Him and Peter Marker were my favourite commentators.
Yep, Peter Marker was great to listen to and formed a great double act with Daisy. Marker was the more astute and slightly reserved commentator, with Daisy having a bit of license to bung it on when necessary and get excited.

Oh, for a Peter Marker-style to commentate today. Great player too (from all accounts, too young to have seen him grace the field).

Re: The SANFL's most infamous incident?

Not a well known one but the post match punch on between some North players and Central players on the way to the changing rooms after a match at Prospect in 1973. It was the catalyst for away teams using the Prospect Cricket Club rooms in future.

How about the pre-match punch on between Central and Norwood when the two teams managed to cross paths during the warmup? 1980s IIRC.
Round 17 1988, at the Parade. Didn't they both go to warm-up at the same end? Not sure who started it/broke protocol, maybe Centrals as they were playing away. I seem to recall it being something Kerls was responsible for?

Re: Are the Reserves staying or going

Those clowns wouldn't know the SANFL if it bit them on the arse.

I found Ditts' comment of "If you're playing in the reserves, you're probably wasting your time aren't you?" a bit offensive. Not everyone wants to play at the top level, and just because you're in the second best bunch of players at your club doesn't mean you don't count. Also, I presume that if you play for the Crows or Power reserves you're also wasting your time?

Mind you, Ditts should know plenty about being second best since he perpetually spent his squash career coming runner-up to the Khan brothers.

That's not going to happen. If ever they were going to get any decent support it would have been while there was a novelty factor. Other than tge Walker game it hasn't happened- and won't. Maybe playing more country games would get a few more out to support them- but that doesn't really help the SANFL clubs

What is more hysterical is the posters after last weeks result. Where are they apologising for their anti North rant. A banner for a so called GROG squad? Yes I know you are passionate North supporters but how could a semi professional State league club sanction that on a banner ?

No I'm with Virgin Mobile. I've had the same number call me eight times this week and I've missed them because I'm busy at work, answered when I could at lunchtime only for it to be a f**king telemarketer. I hung up immediately.

Got a call earlier from a different number earlier and again it was a f**king telemarketer. I didn't say anything at first and waited for them to talk. This Indian woman said "I'm looking for Kate?" I stayed silent and after 30 seconds they hung up.
I'm with Virgin too, haven't been harangued as yet (touch wood).

Mind you, if I don't recognise the number I don't answer it, because almost all of the time it's a telemarketer or some other unsolicited knob. If it's someone who rally wants to speak to me, they can leave a voicemail message or text me.

1987 they were born, that's 1.....2016 = 30.
I know this has been discussed ad nauseam before in other threads, but I can't resist!

I have to agree with Wedgie. If you want to celebrate an 'anniversary' or 'birthday', you need to be around for at least a year. Customarily, we celebrate birthdays in years, and 'anniversary' literally means the turning or passage of a year because it it combines Latin words for 'year' and 'turn'. :-B

Righto, back to 'football', which is an amalgam of the English words 'foot' and 'ball'. ;)

Great work by the Roosters, after a slow first half to the first quarter they started to assert themselves. Things are starting to look promising at Prospect. Thought the Bays might've given a better account of themselves as they've been on the improve. I expected a much tighter match.

Great gesture by Michael Virgin after his long goal in the second quarter to tap his black armband and point over to the "Skeffington End."
