Re: wubsy's Sydney thread

Sydney coach John Longmire has always liked his list stacked with ruck options but a serious shoulder injury to Callum Sinclair in Saturday's 42-point win over Gold Coast means his big man cupboard is all but bare.

Sinclair dislocated his right shoulder in the opening minute of the Swans' win, and while he bravely attempted to play on after getting the injury strapped, he was helped from the field again on the quarter-time siren in agony after it popped out again.

The 29-year-old played no further part in the match and all signs point to Sinclair being unavailable for a couple of games at best, and the rest of the season at worst.

Adding to Longmire's headache is the fact that Sam Naismith (knee) hasn't played senior footy since 2017 and the promising Darcy Cameron (quad) is also injured.

That leaves Michael Knoll – the former SANFL ruckman picked up by Sydney in the mid-season draft – as the only fit player the coach can call on to replace Sinclair.

Sydney will anxiously await the results of Sinclair's scans ahead of next week's match against Essendon.

"It came out a couple of times so that's not ideal," Longmire said post-match.

"Sam has been training and looking terrific but the medical guys won't give him the go ahead just yet.

"Darcy has had a bad run this year, starting with a PCL (strain) in the pre-season and now a quad, so that's unfortunate for him and us.

"That's why we loaded up on ruckmen in the pre-season draft and mid-season draft because you can't have enough of them."

Knoll had 10 touches, 32 hit-outs and four tackles in Sydney's loss to the Suns in the NEAFL on Saturday, but Longmire said handing the responsibility of leading the Swans' ruck division at senior level to the newcomer might be too much.

"That's a big ask for someone to come in halfway through the year and do that, and he's still learning the game as well," he said.

"We're trying to teach him as quick as we can but whether he's up for AFL footy yet, we'll make that decision during the week."

Talk has intensified about the prospect of the League introducing a mid-season trade period between clubs from next season, a concept Longmire said he's a fan of.

"I've been on the aggressive side of (supporting the introduction of) that anyway," he said.

"With the trading of the picks we do now I think that's the start of it and I look forward to seeing where it goes.

"We'll get there, how long it takes I not sure, but it won't be this week."

Longmire even joked that he might contact Essendon counterpart John Worsfold over the next couple of days to make a gentlemen's agreement ahead of next week's clash at the MCG.

The Bombers lost their own ruckman Tom Bellchambers (calf) against Greater Western Sydney on Thursday night, so Longmire threw up some ways to deal with their ruck worries.

"Two mids in the middle (might be an idea), or rock, scissors, paper?" he said with a laugh.

So why did you recruit him then if it was not for this exact scenerio?

Re: Norwood V South

i will enlighten you Brett.

We pay a peppercorn rent on the condition that we made all the improvements (change rooms, club rooms, grandstand , construct an oval, etc etc). We also pay for everything and the council provides a small amount of ground maintenance , such as coring, scarifying etc (where machinery is involved).

Your club Sturt like the other clubs have a different arrangement with the relevant ground owner (Council) whereby they lease the ground to the club for a lease agreement. These are all heavily subsidised as well.

If you would like the same agreement as South, Unley Council will take your 8 million and let you have the ground for a dollar, and you get to pay for everything as well. Sue Dowling who is an astute business manager will steer you clear of this arrangement as the current lease deal that you have is much better for Sturt. Good luck to you as you get to play at an oval that was built at ratepayers expense over a long period. We did not get that benefit when we moved to Noarlunga for the good of the league.

You even got to move back there after you turned your back on them. For all I know you may be one of the many Sturt volunteers who help out with the boundary signage, fencing etc that gets put up and down for each game as a consequence.

We have not been in the black since Dan Moriarty won his third magarey medal. That is our doing but year in year out we keep going. One thing is for sure , we have never been blessed with an easy ride.

Glenelg Journeyman Spargo has been dropped from the league side after over celebrating some other football game on Friday night. Replacing him is Stampy a 3.8 metre fast moving pachyderm with a nose for goals.

Pirate keeps is spot after not being being sighted last week (according to footy chick and valleys07) and last weeks other newcomers AMBays, FourthEstate and Dutchy remain in the starting 18 despite their poor showing. Surprisingly Pseudo has been named again despite not turning up claiming that there was no legitimate game on.

Re: Roy Laird’s last season coaching

Last week at Elizabeth, AS we came off the ground after the little cup presentation, Joel Cross did not go to the South rooms but went straight around to the Centrals rooms where he was stopped from going in.

John Platten came to the door to see what he wanted

After telling John what he wanted, John escorted him in to offer his congratulations to Roy Laird his outstanding success and achievements.

Pity that did not happen out on the ground but I for one think it's great that Crossy recognised Roy for all that he has done, not only for Centrals but for being a voice against the fee ride that the AFL clubs get in our league.

An outstanding career as a player and coach comes to end this Saturday. His legacy is great and will surely become a club hall of fame legend.
