Re: Rnd 5 - South v Eagles @ Hickinbotham (Sun 4/5)

Eagles have a terrific record at Hickinbotham and will go there with confidence. South look much grittier and purposeful than in recent years and it should be a top game. Record crowd v Eags @ Hickinbotham Phil?

Ferret has a history of being 'fun' to stand next to at the footy. His best 'fun' though has been in the grandstand where many humorous incidents have taken place over the years.

Eagles malaise of 2014 continues with inability to stop opposition momentum. West down 12 goals to 7 and kick the next 8.

Re: Rnd 5 - Port v Eagles @ Alberton (Sat 2/5)

Agree Ferret. With von Bertouch, Allmond and Thurlow not in the league team, there is pressure at the selection table.
I thought Rowntree played his best game since his knee op, Raymond looked more like his old self with his attack on the ball, Petrenko was fearless and tackled hard and Ainger was constructive. Power reserves didn't seem to have a plan B when the Eags took the game to them in the second half. You are not going to win games by chipping the ball around in your back half when 2-3 goals down.

Re: R8 - WWT Eagles v Sturt @ Woodville

That crowd figure would have to be wrong, I would've thought 2000-2500

Agreed it didn't look a 2800 crowd but when I went into the clubrooms at the start of the second quarter there would have been at least 300-400 people in there over the 2 floors. it wasn't the best outside plus there was a large Past Players and Officials show going on (to do with the 25 years) hence the large number indoors.
As for the game, the first quarter deluge spoilt the game as a spectacle and it became a war of attrition. Our defence was superb all day but especially in the last quarter when Sturt were virtually camped in our 50 M arc. (21-3) forward entries in the last quarter Sturt's way. Luke Thompson given best at the awards.

Re: Who wins the flag?

Port and quite easily.

Eagles are hopeless on Adelaide Oval. They really struggle there.

Port know it well and how to play it with professional full time players who are taught how to play it (week after week).

Interesting comment seeing the Eagles have only played once at the revamped oval. Granted they were beaten in that game but they are playing a completely different style of football this year.

Re: Every scorer for the 2015 minor round

Could not believe that the highest goals scorer for Norwood only had 17! (Phillips). This would have to be the lowest total at Norwood for possibly 100 years. The same could be said of Shillabeer at North with 16. A far cry from the Ken Farmer days!

The lowest since my complete goal scoring records starts in 1983 was Justin Scripps tally for Glenelg in 1997 - 18. Without anything handy, it's fair to say you'd have to go back to the 20s for anything lower

Thanks for the check.

Re: 2nd Semi Final - WWT v West Adelaide

Half Time
7-4 WWT
4-2 WA

WWT goalscorers
2 Wundke
2 Boyd
2 Ainger
1 Rowntree

6 of the 7 WWT goals scored by ex Southee Adelaide footballers

Going to be a close finish
WA might be too quick in the 2nd half
WA should still win from here

11-13 WT
9-11 WA

Great effort by WWT to hang on, I thought Westies had them about the middle of the last quarter
Agreed Mal, I thought they were gone too as West were running all over us.
However, I thought the next 10 minutes was some of the most composed, disciplined and committed football the Eags have played this year.
With only one rotation on the bench (Rowntree and Poole gone with season ending knee injuries), the boys dug deep, lifted their intensity and played smart footy to take control of the game and shut a threatening West out. Very proud of the boys esp Ainger who played possibly his best game for the club when it really counted.

Re: Grade Cricket

Here they go the mighty Eagle keyboard warriors in great early season form.
Just so we are clear, winning a cavalcade of junior premierships with players that go onto become C and D grade heroes isn't junior development.

Just for your info C Horse-
The following played 1st Grade for WTCC on Saturday vs Prospect and also came through the juniors at WTCC-
Smith, Fisher, Drew, Capel, Kelly, I Johnson, S Johnson, Williams, Hahn - 9 out of 11
Can't comment on GCC list but would be interested to know how many from juniors were in your 1st grade this week end.
Also, it's not C and D grade any more. Time to move on!

Re: SANFL Round 6

Tight, tough finals like pressure game at Alberton. Thought the Eags were the toughest at the ball I have seen them for some time. They also played smart footy, maintaining possession until an opening occurred rather than bombing the ball long and getting it turned over. Allmond continues his stellar form and the whole backline was resolute. Hall racked up stats and is getting back to his best form.

Can any North supporters fill me in on how Schwarz and Appleton are going?

Re: Grade Cricket

In fantastic news for the Eagles in their 'Triple Crown' defence, keeper/batsman Leigh Drennan has announced he will be playing again at the Eagles in season 2017/18. He has secured teaching employment in Adelaide and has also stated that he couldn't imagine playing for any other club.
It is looking increasingly likely that the squad which only lost one game in all forms of competition last season will be kept together. Adding further batting strength would be the icing on the cake!

Re: Round 11

Pleasantly surprised by West's efforts in the ruck yesterday esp third quarter when we got many centre clearances and his 2 goals were a bonus.
Nick Hayes led up well to get 4 and Johansen played another good one and has been solid all year. Lewis would have to be leading the B & F at this stage, another great game yesterday. Backline was outstanding against a very tall Power forward line. Best Eags effort since the last win against Power.

The reversal of round 1 where the Eagles were pretty much full strength and Sturt had the injuries. That being the case, I think Sturt will win. It will be good exposure to finals type pressure for our many younger players introduced this year and will hold them in good stead for the future.

Re: Round 13

Pleasantly surprised by the result yesterday, I thought Sturt would be too good. Well done to the hearty souls who braved the weather in the outer. A shame the weather intervened as probably kept quite a few spectators away and affected the skills of the players. Interestingly a few Eagles players said the ball was more sticky than slippery in the conditions. Youngsters like Rowlands, Sinor, West and Westbrook continue to stand up and against a good Sturt midfield. Interesting dilemma for Godden with Borholm due back soon but West performing so well in the ruck, given his preference for only using one ruckman this year. I've no doubt 'Cutterman' that Mattner will use the loss to good effect in September, he has proven it once already!

Re: Round 17

4,677 at the Eagles v Crows game

Great result and memorable day on many counts.

Thanks to all who played a part in making it happen.

A credit to your organisational skills Phil, a terrific effort and heaps of kids and parents had a fun day.
Having been away the past month and hearing second hand of the dismal efforts against Norwood & South, I didn't approach today's game with much confidence against a strong Crows outfit. 7 goals to 1 half way through the third quarter was well and truly bearing that fear out. About the 20 minute mark though, the game started to turn through a lift in intensity from the Eagles. Although a win was still unlikely at 3/4 time, you could tell that the players had a real belief they could win at the huddle and proceeded to play in a dominating fashion winning all the 50/50 contests and putting immense pressure on the Crows. Boyd had an excellent 2nd half as did Johansen but Petrenko, Lewis and Goldy were good all day. Stewart hand injury a worry and Allmond also doubtful next week. No run for Borholm, could be underdone for the finals.

Re: Preliminary Final teams.

Antiquated rule which needs to be changed. As Godden said at presentations, for 5 minutes it was mayhem in the coaches box because they couldn't work out how North were continually getting a free player. They wouldn't be expecting to have to deal with an extra player the opposition has put on the field.
Eagles need to overhaul game plan and list as it is fragile in finals. 2nd, 2nd, 3rd and 3rd in the past 4 years shows they haven't learnt what is required to go the whole way.

That’s a bit rich considering North had dominated the prior 30 minutes of the game.
I think you'll find that the Eagles kicked the first 3 goals of the 3rd quarter and North had that last 15 minutes.
Eagles still lead by 20 points at 3/4 time, but yes North had momentum at the break. If they didn't have 19 players at the start of the last quarter and controlling the game, maybe the Eagles get the first goal and go 26 points up and it changes the game again

Re: Round 17, Woodville West Torrens v Adelaide reserves

Yes agree . This is a fair it of spin . How many paid to get in ? Kids are free anyway. The Eagles use it to spruik attendance numbers . Good to get kids involved but where is the incentive for the Adults to stay . What has been done to keep the Parents stay ? Would love to hear that. It false numbers .
I would like to hear what your club has done to encourage people to go to a Crows game?

Sure there are many kids there but they are with adults who will spend money on food and drink.

It's also about building relationships with the community and the various organisations who had stalls there had planty of people visiting when I was there. Rather than take the narrow view of 'inflating crowd numbers', why not take the wider view of the Eagles actually doing something to promote their club. It's not actually about the Crows, it's using the absence of a reserve game to have masses of kids playing footy in a carnival with a community atmosphere. If the Eagles can also make some $ out of it, well and good.

West tried hard today but with their 'damage limitation' style of football and lack of depth, the Eags were too classy. Re: Round 12 Eagles v Glenelg Saturday 1334 (not a typo)

Our on-ball division were awesome today and set the game up. Sinor, Foote, Lonergan Poole and Toumpas gave us first look and we capitalised. Our work off the ball is very disciplined and didn't allow Glenelg any openings. Our fitness is first class as we ran out the game well and increased our lead in the second half. Thought Bays were reactive for most of the game and didn't show the fierce desire they had last year. Double chance locked up, would have well and truly taken that at the start of the year!

Central's persistence gave them a deserved win. Clean ball handling has been a feature of the Eagles this year, it wasn't there yesterday. Expect up to 5 changes next week. Poulter and Schofield a fair chance to play league this year given Sheedy's penchant for playing juniors may also get picked up hence the need to recruit aggressively which we have.

LOL.

If it was a 3-2-1 set up we would have a few too many take votes of each other. I think this year has seen the 'im the man' worn by the most different players in a season.

We don't have the top end talent some of the other teams have in the competition but we have 6-7 blokes who can genuinely win/or have won us a game throughout the year.

As a former Northern Areas boy, I appreciate the updates. Keep them coming during finals!

One of the more dominant 4 qtr displays from our blokes I’ve seen in a while. Should’ve been 6 up at half time but for missing easy goals.
Absolutely loved our tackling. Parto, Turner, Curran, Hosie & Reynolds excellent. Nice first game to Horsnell too.
Plenty to like but plenty to work on, decision making when not under pressure the stand out.
To the Eagles supporters who made the arduous trek today, well done. To the few who numerous times mentioned the premiership players missing from last year whilst getting your arse kicked, stop - just bloody stop. We lost 7-8 flag players last year & the league’s leading goal kicker in the mid year draft in a premiership year. Deal with it.
Good weekend for the club with the B Grade, U/18’s & U/16’s all recording comfortable wins too.

Cooper Horsnell son of former West Torrens reserves player Andrew Horsnell. Andrew couldn't quite make the league team so pleasing to see his son go one better. Andrew was a stand out for Henley after Torrens.

FMD 1435. Shortest day of the year (almost) and a late game start, You have no competition Chandler. If there is a bigger one let me know.

Sturt surprised Port with a great 6 goal win and South had the week off after losing to Norwood.

First time around south won by 6 goals after a close first three quarters.

Sturt may make one change with Houlahan listed with concussion. South look set to have Wilkinson back and don't they need him. Selectors may also make the call on 2 others.

Sturt have won 4 of the last 5 at Unley.

You got it, South by a point.

After Norwood took a 19 pt lead and were in total control, a lift by Redden in the centre square ably assisted by the move of Poole onto the ball sparked 10 minutes of footy that was akin to the second quarter in the 2020 premiership. Norwood offered little resistance thereafter. Rowland did a great job on Shenton (only 5 touches) who always seems to play well against us. With 5 first choice players still to return (VB, Goldy, McFarlane, Cameron and Knight), we are well positioned to get the double chance.

Guifreda retiring
Poole playing country footy with Von Bertouch and Nathan Batley (W A) next year.
Redden to go on for another year (opposition supporters can bag his weight all they like but he's been a major part in 3 premierships)
Great to see McNeil, Jones, Wehr, Rowe, 2020 premiership players along with Jack Lukosius and Izaak Rankine at the after party.
Jack Hayes played with a broken leg - what a superstar!

Can you confirm another rumour at the ground yesterday that Ben Jungfer retiring too. Apparently told Sheedy in Round 5 that he was going back to the farm or NT wherever he was from. Would be two flags in twenty odd games if so, not bad effort
