Re: Rumours and Player Movement Discussions for 2014

mr fuller, you criticise the Eagles for recruiting/poaching players from other clubs, then you criticise the club again for trying to develop juniors what in bloody hells name do want the club to do, go dig up a few from a spud patch!!!!!! I don't think the Eagles went about poaching in the case of Wundke, he let it be well known he didn't want to stay at south, the club would have been negligent if they hadn't approached him. Just get the chip of your shoulder and have faith in the club.

Re: Eagles 2014

Grocke has currently played two internal trials and looks like getting up for the first match.
Von Bertouch has been flying in trials and has great football instincts.
Improvements from Batley, Martyn, Poole and Appleton will significantly improve the onball running division.
Sumner lost confidence in his game when Heath took over the floating backman roll and was then unsure of his role, this should be now rectified.
Lachy MacGregor has been training well and looks fit, he could be a surprise pocket rocket.
Culley is still over coming last seasons injury where he ripped the hamstring off the bone don't know how far off he is.
Hope some players from the last two U18 premierships can step up and put pressure on the first 21.

Main areas of weakness are in ruck and lack of height in the back lines.
Unsure where our likely finish will be.

Re: Rnd 4 - Central v Eagles @ Playford Alive (Sat 25/4)

Great to see the Eagles' persistence with some of their former juniors now paying dividends. Although some/many thought they should have been shelved the fruit is now bearing. Although not stars at underage levels a good grounding at reserves level has proved successful. Friendships and bondings formed by playing together for numerous years brings great spirit vital for a successful team.
Much criticised Sam Martyn was not bought up in an AFL type environment hence has does not look like a fluid smooth moving footballer, but his gut running from start to finish wins out for him. Must be persisted with.
Godden in the off season has obviously put a lot of planning into the game plan and his relationship with the players. Both having a significant effect.
The use of Goldsworthy and Jarrad coming out of defence has been devastating and sets up many opportunities.
Lachy McGregor has shown the benefit of a second league preseason and has shown form that must put him in contention for a state berth.
Huge test next week as the Eagles have not yet beaten a Crows or power reserve team.

Re: Rnd 4 - Central v Eagles @ Playford Alive (Sat 25/4)

Mr Fuller you are an absolute pain in the arse supporter, always negative and critical.
Supporters were always critical when we lost our best juniors to the draft. Now we try and develop the next tier down to provide the club with long term rewards, you still complain that it's taking too long. If they are not the cream of the crop they will always take longer to develop.
Tom Schwartz was given the clubs best player award against Norwood.
Angus Poole has been great in all three games, provides something the club has lacked at ground level for some time. Our small ground level players in Boyd, McGregor and Poole have added a different and exciting element to our game plan. Also, Poole is a very accurate kick for goal.
To make knowledgeable and informed comments you should regularly watch both reserves and league matches throughout the year.

Re: Rnd 5 - Port v Eagles @ Alberton (Sat 2/5)

A great team game by the Eagles yesterday. No really outstanding individuals. A team effort where every player did their bit and followed the game plan. The first half was a war of attrition to see who would crack first, the Eagles appeared to be wilting ten minutes from half time and a couple of goals to the power reserves seemed to give them a lift which should have given them the confidence to kill off the Eagles in the second half, along with their supposed superior AFL fitness. A positive attitude from the Eagles after half time and the willingness to a chance proved decisive.
When the power fell behind their lack of guts to take chances made it easy for the Eagles to close out the game.
Although the stats suggest that maybe the power were the better team the more direct play and the chance taking made it all obvious to those watching that the Eagles deserved to win.
The Eagles have now beaten the two grand finalists from last year.
Was the poor performance against West Adelaide the waking up call they needed.
It appears some intensive work in the off season on a completely different game plan, bridge mending, regaining the players confidence in him and giving a few local former juniors a chance is paying off handsomely for Godden.

Re: The 2015 Attendance Comparisons Thread

One of the annoying features of the nine team league competition was the skewing of the premiership table with teams not having played the same number of matches. Going on the premiership position it was difficult to get a reasonable idea of true positions as people were unsure if the teams who had played less games were still to play their extra game against a stronger or weaker teams.
Now the bye has been eliminated from the fixture, the SANFL has still managed to stuff this up by starting with a split round one, but not completing this round until round 14 (July 18). I don't mind a split round over consecutive weeks but this is ridiculous.
Keep it simple SANFL and more people might get interested in the SANFL.

Re: Rnd 9 - South v Eagles @ Hickinbotham Oval (Mon 8/6)

Here we go again. It appears Ramrods assessment of Lachy McGregor was made on one game.
He has been a revelation to the Eagles attack. In eight games this year he has kicked 21 goals (3,3,4,2,2,4,0 and 3). He only plays forward and with three talls playing regularly up forward for the Eagles he has to use plenty of smarts to get his goals. His run down tackling of unwary defenders is sensational. His hands are very good, rarely fumbles and can take a high grab. He is an excellent kick for goal. Other great attributes are his reading of the ball off hands and his positioning to gather the crumbs. His ability to play one out from the goal square gives the coach more attacking options. McGregor has only played 34 league games, in terms of a SANFL league player he is not very experienced yet has performed extremely consistently this season. The match Vs Sturt was his poorest game by far but conditions on that day were very poor. Eagles won 6 goals to 3. He played in the state match against WA so he must have been impressing someone. Give the fellow a break. When you can get to watch a dynamic small forward why knock him.
I can assure you, ALL Eagles fans love him.

It was like a scene from the outback at Prospect on Saturday. Before the final slug could be put in the Western Eagles head, the vultures had already gathered firstly trying to attack the fledgling's parents and then the vulnerable youngsters, a total disgrace and a dog of an act. What is the SACA doing about protecting the three clubs they have put in this invidious position.

Why would club/clubs with a history of developing juniors be garrotted in favour of a regime with no proven track record in producing juniors.

Looks like Port Adelaide and West Torrens will definitely be part of the Premier div 1 comp next season. But will Glenelg................. Are they indebted to the debt ridden football club so much they are probably not viable. Maybe their financial situation should be scrutinised as much as the whole of the PA & WT cricket clubs have been. Did the SACA make a commitment to the GCC/Oval that they now might regret. Where does the Glenelg oval now sit with the renovations/upgrading of Adelaide Oval No2 and Railways Oval. Re: Grade Cricket

What a debacle at Henley & Grange Mem.
Just before tea it started to rain again (pitch previously covered due to rain), tea taken at normal 3.30pm, still raining, umpires wouldn't allow ground staff to put covers on. Twenty minutes into tea, umpires allow covers to be put on. Twenty minutes of pitch getting rained on. In the end it did not matter as no more play was possible. If further play was possible WT would have been disadvantaged playing on a damp pitch. All clubs are required to have covers to protect pitches, why not use them? Les Burdett was at the match and couldn't believe what was going on. Some common sense was surely needed.

Where do port adelaide's reserves reserves come from?? Surely if they are coming from the Eagles zone this would have a high impact on Eagles recruiting from their OWN zone. Has the Eagles been given any compensation for having to battle this anomaly. Was always going to be a battle for the Eagles after being allocated magpies old zone. How can they convert the unconvertable. Not unhappy with juniors from the zone but is there a 100% commitment from all. How are Norwood going with the Eyre Peninsula?

The AFL couldn't give a shit about any other sporting organisations. Take this Saturday, Crows play at 4.05 pm, with lots of summer sports just finishing minor rounds or into finals it puts these participants in a position where they can't attend the Crows match. A 7.20 pm would have been much better, but oh no the Crows and Power can have crap times they'll fill Adelaide Oval and the AFL will do double back flips to accommodate the TV stations.

Re: Eagles v Port Sat 1410

It will really hurt watching Cam Sutcliffe play against the Eagles. Cam should have been a prime signing for the Eagles this season, but SANFL's new marquee signing rubbish has floored the Eagles. How can SANFL clubs compete with the huge salary caps of the power and crows plus handing out a $100,000 job in the football department. The SANFL should be protecting the eight SANFL clubs not plotting their downfall. At least if the two AFL clubs want a marquee player at least make sure they have some connection to the clubs, ie previous players, why couldn't one of the delisted players be given the position. There could be no justification in establishing "the marquee player". No wonder the AFL reserves teams are loathed in the SANFL.

North or West for mine.

If true, then this is poor by the eagles. He is exactly the type of player that the eagles lack so its strange why they haven't been in his ear from the moment he was delisted from the Power about returning to the club.

I hope the money we paid Lonegan (the player) to get him to the club hasn't drained the ability for us to make a decent offer to players like Pudney.

Can assure you the Eagles have been in Pudney's ear for quite sometime, were hopeful of getting him back.

Re: Round 6 WWWT v Centrals Saturday 1410

For all the moaning from some of the Centrals supporters on here I expected to come against a rabble.

Not sure what kind of standard the doggies have been playing in previous weeks but the team that came out against the eagles was actually pretty competitive with a few kids who you can tell will be very good once they get a bit more experience. Thought your ruckman did a reasonable job against an in-form Redden and was very impressed with Montgomerie. From an outsiders perspective the main thing you are missing at the moment is a key forward. Yes, its more than likely you won't play finals this year given how many key injured players you have and the inexperience of the current players but next year your team should be around the mark.

Eagles had a tough time at the Office and aside from our fast start we really only broke even with Centrals for the rest of the match. Very concerning was our wayward kicking for goal and wasted opportunities. Foote's absence was sorely felt in the middle but gave some others the opportunity to step up. Redden was great, Sinor had another good game and Von Bertouch probably should have probably ended up with 5 goals. Jack Hayes great around the ground but very poor with his kicking for goal. Lonergan looked underdone following his return and Rowe had an uncharacteristic quiet day - whoever stood him did a great job.

"Mr Fuller" your statement that the the Eagles only broke even with Centrals for the rest of the match is not comparing apples with apples. In the last three quarters Centrals had the use of a 5 goal gale twice to the Eagles once. The final result was 11.13 to 7.7, 24 scoring shots to 14. Although it wasn't a great match to watch a let down was on the cards. Must remember we had Foote, Goldsworthy, Thompson, Haylock and Sharrad all out injured. There is also Sam Lowson and James Tsitas to be possibly fitted in to the team.

Re: Round 7 WWT v West Adelaide Saturday 1335

Usually when a new coach comes in to a club for his first stint at coaching at league level the season appears to get lost with the new coach assessing his players and what they can do. Putting in place new structures that the players have to learn and getting a coaching group together along with recruiting. This I feel was the senario for the Eagles in 2019.

Jade Sheedy hit the ground running from the first training session, he must have done a lot of homework straight after his appointment. He is well organised, has a simple but exciting game plan that the players have quickly adapted to and enjoy playing to. From the start he knew what players he wanted in the team and where they would play. Explored different football competitions to find likely league players ( Seymour and Carcuro). Reviewed the player list to find players that might not have been given great opportunities in the past but had skills he might be able to utilise (Wehr, Comitogianni and Lee). But best off all he has given the youngster a go (Jones, McNeil and Mansell) plus playing many players in the reserves from the 2018 and 2019 premiership teams. Jade Sheedy has been a breath of fresh air for the club.

Re: Preliminary Final Eagles v South

What a change it makes when you play the match with INTENSITY Eagles!

The intensity shown today should be the bare minimum that we should be playing with from the opening bounce.

Two separate gutsy efforts from Jones and Jack Hayes attempting to spoil the ball within South's Forward 50m arc that could have knocked them out set the tone. Last week our players would have sat back and allowed the South player to mark uninterrupted.

Lonergan's inclusion was highly risky but his presence was massive (literally) and helped us to win the clearances. Foote had a great game and Tsitas continued to rack up the footy. Wehr and Mansell were fantastic in our defence.

Jungfer's inclusion in preference to Seymour was an interesting call and the latter could consider him unlucky. Seymour has played well through the season but is pretty well one-paced and Sheedy clearly wanted extra speed back there. I can't see Syemour forcing his way back in with North's three quick little blokes - Young, LeBois etc - rotating there.

Despite this some disappointing signs from a few players again -

Poole once again with his idiotic off-the ball lack of discipline that almost cost us two goals. He must go. Toumpas cannot be in the centre square as he is a bit soft and plays his best footy out in the open.Von Bertouch needs a rocket up his a$s and someone to tell him to get our of first gear. He's got a huge mark, and a great kick. He has the potential to kick 4-5 goals but needs to play with some desperation. However he stays this week.

Can't believe you are an Eagles supporter. Negative, negative and more negativity. Show a bit of faith in the coach and club. You are a pita.

Just watched a batting master class at Henley Oval from Ryan Gibson. Opened for the Western Eagles didn't open his account until the 19th ball he faced then proceeded to hit 205 off 118 balls, 20 x 4 and 10 x 6. Could be destined for higher honours, we will just have to wait and see.
Did you stay til the end?

Yes and cried all the way home. Unfortunately The Western Eagles attack is very, very thin. With a limit of six overs for Spencer Johnson it further reduced the effectiveness of the attack. It was most probably a case of who ever won the toss was in the best position. The winner of the toss was always going to send the opposition in. There was a little bit in the wicket early but then settled down to the normal road. It was good to see the Redback's coach come out and watch a fair bit of the match..........most probably the first R'backs coach to come and watch a match at Henley for about five years.

Cricket has an uncanny ability of being a great leveller - Gibbo was out for 1, second ball today. Will succeed a lot more than he fails this year though.

Would rather the win and Gibson make 1 than his 205 and a loss.
With last weeks two highest run scorers failing, it was good to see some lesser lights come to the fore and with Daniel Drew's brilliant century, a winning score was registered.
After a long lay off with injury it was exciting to see Spencer Johnson gradually getting back to his best.
