Re: Coronavirus (Covid19)

our rate of infections is still below Singapore (0.004 v 0.007%) of the population

Our death rate is exceptional under 1% compared to the rest of the world (292000 cases 12 700 deaths - ~4%). https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/situation-reports/20200322-sitrep-62-covid-19.pdf?sfvrsn=f7764c46_2 WHO situational data reports

As someone who works in health I think the governments of all persuasions across Australia are doing a good job treading the fine line between flattening the curve and allowing people to go about our normal every day lives.

it's the d!ckheads out there making it problematic not the governments

The reality is this will effect les than who we think will get the virus and for the vast majority the effects will be mild to moderate.

The problem we have as a nation is that even with 1% Morbidity of a 20% population infection rate we don't have enough health resources to go around.

Bottom line: follow official advice, practice social distancing and good hand hygiene

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch

With Jacinda Ardern deciding to close all New Zealand schools as of Wednesday, that will leave Australia and Mexico as the only two OECD countries not to have closed schools. When looking at the Mexican President's thoughts about the issue, this gets extremely scary for Australian teachers and schoolchildren:

'But it is the president’s personal attitude that has Mexicans puzzled. He continues to attend mass public rallies, shaking hands and kissing babies. Asked how he was protecting Mexico, López Obrador removed two religious amulets from his wallet and proudly showed them off.

“The protective shield is the ‘Get thee behind me, Satan,’” López Obrador said, reading off the inscription on the amulet, “Stop, enemy, for the Heart of Jesus is with me.”

If Morrison is following the same reasoning for not closing schools as Mexico is, he better have a mighty big Hillsong rabbit's foot!!!

The State leaders will have to take control in the face of LNP inaction.

You realise our rate of COVID-19 infections (0.004%) is lower than Singapore (0.007%) the international benchmark with their healthcare isolation methodology (WHO data)

Our deathrate is exceptional ATM So I think your criticism of ScoMo is ideologically driven not COVID-19 clinically driven.

not saying all is Rosey and there isn't worse to come but criticisms of the collective government responses of both political persuasions are way off beam especially when they are being done in consultation with the CHO.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

On the contrary I think the ramifications of COVID-19 makes them more likely to stay

36 player lists means they'll just (be allowed to) recruit another 20 players and pay them the minuscule top up wage to be on their State league list instead of the current Rookie wage under the AFL players agreement.

With the AFL and it's clubs cutting back costs in the new post COVID-19 world I've got more chance of seeing snow in Darwin in the next 10 years than an AFL reserves competition….

Re: 1981 SANFL season

So with no footy on over the weekend I did some SAFootballArchive binging on youtube

Specifically the 81, 85, 87 and 90 That was the season that was - yes 1990 I'm into S&M Booney but couldn't finish it if you get my drift... same with 87. 86 GF was good to watch to the end though ;)

Some comments though on some of the players of that era which we all know all too well. However you wonder though the jaundive view of hindsight and memories of a simple better time were those players really that good especially wen compared to modern footballers?

The short answer is yes.

Ebert far out was he ahead of his time?? The 70s-80s prototype for the modern day rampaging bull midfielder who can pay inside and out. His commitment to go through the line of the ball with surety of hands and then disposal. He reminds me of the best player in the game right now (Dusty) and if he was born 40 years later you could see him dominate current footy in the same way.

Bagshaw Similar to Ebert but just silky smooth. Seemed to be in slow motion but just his balance and poise and at the same time just committed to the footy. Compared to Ebert he seemed more languid but to see him at pace drill blokes with stab passes, skill personified. Once again you could see him playing as the swing/outside mid.

Rebounding precision passes from the half back, release from defence as a mid or the 3rd fourth tall forward with his marking ability. So versatile for todays game. Would star.

Peter Carey. look I love the bloke, obviously but watching him I got a new appreciation over the weekend. Has there ever been a big bloke in the game who could consistently hit blokes left or right foot on the tit or to advantage like he could? Now Big blokes with good hands aren't uncommon but to find one who can kick like an elite midfielder left or right in footy well, Unicorns are more common.

I couldn't think of anyone in todays game who could do what he could do. Happy to be corrected.

What my weekend taught me was while the footy now is different and with advances in coaching, preparation, professionalism the game may be better and the average football is better but todays stars are no better than the stars of the past.

Re: 1982 preliminary final

Port were our B!tches that year in big games, watched the YouTube of the 1982 Escort Cup final last night. ;)

Then watched the last qtr of the 1986 game at Alberton on the Big Replay.

Fair move of Cornesy to put Hall forward at the 20 min mark of the last qtr when we were behind (Woodlands off, Stringer to HB, Hall forward). He kicks the last two of the game. The sealer comes from a 40 m bullet from Carey on his right. Earlier that quarter he's lacing blokes over 30 on his left.

I've said it before and I'll say it again I cant recall a more complete big man in Australian football. Rucking, Marking, hand ball and kicking over 40m. Both sides of the body. The more I watch of Carey the more I appreciate what a freak he was and how blessed the GFC were to have him.

Re: 1982 preliminary final

If there's one silver lining to this whole COVID19 malarkey is that it's made me give SAFootballArchive a good smashing on YouTube.

Has footy changed? Yep.
Has it improved? yep in some aspects

What hasn't changed is the good players are great no matter what era

Watching some of the Norwood highlights you see Macca and next minute a 30 m handball is effortlessly fired out (inevitably out of shot of the camera as it pans to the receiver) to the advantage of a Norwood player. The result either a Norwood goal or a contest and Macca follows up, crashes in, wins the footy, fires out another 30 m handball...

rinse repeat....

Re: 1982 preliminary final

I think great footy sides aren't great necessarily because of their stars they're great because of their bottom tier players.

I used to say the 21st player picked at Centrals (2000-2010) would make every other league side you couldn't say that about the 21st player at the other eight clubs.

The same with the 20th player at Port back in the day and even the Hawthorn teams of 2012-2015 and the late 80s.

Great teams are defined by their depth and their system of play that is reliable in finals footy.

Re: 1982 preliminary final

Imho Taylor would have won it in 78’, although I’d need to watch again. Seemed to be some very even performances across both sides. IIRC Davies, Howard, Downes and Klomp were all busy for Sturt. Whilst Taylor, Adamson, Craig and Turbill probably had greatest effect for Norwood.

AS a 7 year old mad footy kid, my recollection was hearing the name "Taylor" a lot on the radio whilst we listen to the game at the Cowell Show with my Grandparents. If that's any indication of best players. MInd you I had checked out of the footy season that year two weeks earlier after the 1st semi.

1977 and 1978 were mentally scaring footy seasons in my early life and went a long way in determining who I hated in a footy sense for the next 40+ years….

Back to the 78 GF, I think Sturt supporters would argue Des Foster was BOG that day! 8)

Re: Jack Oatey Medallists

Never knew about this $2000 rule. As a kid playing for Tea Tree Gully in the later '80's there was a photo of Ben Harris in the clubrooms, and I always wondered how he got to Port (of course these days they are neighbouring Councils, another stupid idea!!)
Also, with the Jarman's being at Gaza, I just assumed that was always North because it was closer in to the city, but should they have been Torrens players? And I always assumed Krieg come from the mid-North area
Was the original intention ever for Pertaringa to become Torrens home ground?
In hindsight, would having been putting a new club at Modbury and Elizabeth right from the start and keeping West and Torrens where they were without Woodville a more viable option? Would it have been seen as too much of a risk? Would it have met with resistance from Glenelg, Sturt, South, who in comparison with the west/north-west teams had struggled since WW2?

Without want to take this thread off track Woodville were basically brought in to weaken Port on the back of their six in a row during the 1950s. Centrals were put in recognition that, that area of Adelaide was the future population growth area. AS has been discussed the plan was to get rid South at the time, too. (South out Centrals in - stay as an 8 team competition) but when that became to difficult politically Woodville was created and a 10 team comp it became.

It is interesting that the NSW Rugby League did the same in 1967. They brought in Cronulla-Sutherland to weaken St George on the back of their 11 in a row premierships from 1956 to 1966. Cronulla were the equivalent of Woodville established in the adjacent Southern suburbs of the St George area. Penrith entered in 1967 in the growth western suburbs area of Sydney, aka Centrals.

Anyway I sure RIG has a better and more factual recollection of this and I eagerly await his 1970 season summary and JO nomination.

There, thread back on track.

Re: 1964 - 1990

Of all the Grand Finals that Glenelg played they should have won more with the talent they had.

1975- This is one and 77 & 90 they should have one. Best SANFL side ever to hit the ground stats wise . Nothing went right Grand Final Day
the unmentionable year - Port Adelaide monkey off the back with Second Semi win but as the same in 1975 & 77 just didn't go right on the day.

These are the two that should be in cabinet at Brighton Rd

77 would've been one we pinched that given Ports dominance of the season - If Holst had stayed on Ebert when Russel got shifted to HF at 3/4 time and If Marker wasn't in the stands....
81, we stopped playing in August...

74, 82, 87 and 88 we showed what a good finals side we actually were in that era, coming from the Elimination
On that year, spotted this at last years GF Booney ....

Re: 1964 - 1990

Two things I remember about those great Bay sides were obviously the talent they had, but they also became the physically hardest side in the comp - was almost like they took it upon themselves to not be the victims but instigators (in simplistic terms). I’ ve always said that the premiership team nearly always has to have those two things in their favour - Ability and physicality. They were a seriously tough side.

Couldn't agree more.

All premierships have skill and talent they also have that essential CF (C*** factor)

Re: SANFL 2020 Season

Law 20.2 needs to be read here.

Not up to the umpire to determine if the player understands/is aware that he has a free but elects to play on to advantage.

Players determine if they want to play on to advantage after a free kick, all the umpire is required to determine is,
1. Is play continuous?
2. Is it taken from in line or behind the “Mark”

Umpire got it right, player got it wrong

South coach needs to brush up on his understanding of the Laws of footy.

Now the real question is should Australian Football change their definition of advantage to that of Rugby where the Referee signals a penalty but allows the team to play on for a period of time to determine if they can score a try but then bring it back to the spot of the infringement.

Re: Round 7 Centrals v Glenelg Saturday 1410

Without wanting to sound like I'm kicking a proud club when they're down, Central look and play like we did under Massie

Get it but are the turnover kings. We used to match sides for scores from stoppages, scores from frees and scores from marks (not to the same extent as the other two) but we used to get slaughtered in scores from turnovers. It wasnt uncommon for opposition scores from turnovers to be the final margin

My other abiding memory of Centrals under Roy was that you's go out there and the ground would be worn out in certain areas. Centrals were so well drilled that you could see their movement patterns at training and sure enough players would run those patterns in games. This meant the player with the ball knew where their team mates were running so they knew where to kick. Centrals under Roy were so efficient.

You had a young lad from Darwin play 18s on the weekend, Brodie Lake. Member of the Gold Coast suns Academy, played the All stars game last AFL GF day but not getting any game time so has come down to enhance his chances of getting drafted.

IF not picked up he'll be a recruit for you next year. Good kid

Re: Coronavirus (Covid19)

SOURCE re IVERMECTIN

https://www.healthindustryhub.com.au/pharmaceutical-news-trends/australian-triple-therapy-for-covid-19-cure-and-prevention/
So for a virus we’re going to treat it with an anti parasitic and an antibiotic?

Yes I see the how the antibiotic can treat the secondary infection to alleviate the infection but it still doesn’t treat the viral source. Personally I’d rather isolate and practise good standard precautions so I don’t get it rather than take a triple therapy that won’t cure the virus.

As the good professor will no doubt verify you can’t cure virus it why the flu still exists today, all you do is kick the can down the road as the little bastards keep mutating. This is a form of SARS from the late 00s and they also believe that there are three types of it circulating based on the variation in the symptoms being recorded.

Given his expertise is also in the gut he is doing great thing in a condition I have which there is no current cure Ulcerative Colitis but can be managed.

Also when reading your link they state that this triple therapy “could” or “may” treat this condition no mention of “will” or inferences of clinical effectiveness.

Oh and I bet London to a brick he will also advocate standard and transmission based precautions (PPE, hand hygiene, isolation, non contact, social distancing) to manage outbreaks (which is what our governments are advocating) along with gastric intestinal disease which his his area of expertise.

Finally don’t You or Daisy assume others aren’t doing research or verify information from other sources just because we don’t agree or acquiesce to your rant.

Finally I bet I can manipulate any stat or question the validity, reliability or precision of any stat quoted in here to suit my argument.

Lies, damn lies and statistics as Mark Twain once said
