Do you play football to have fun?
Do you like losing?
Do you like it when you get lots of kicks?
Do you like kicking goals?
Do you like it when big kids hurt you?

Re: Junior Football

Been pretty happy with the umps this year, so far, apart from watching my lad playing in U 14's, watched an U12 game last weekend which had a young lad in a green shirt umpring obviously working with a mentor, very impressed with the lad, communicated well with the lads playing, explaining decisions etc, which i thought he got most right, actually thought he did a better job than the other guy ;)

Re: Junior Football

I don't need tips from you my friend. I would suggest the umpires know the rules of what grade they are umpiring. Yes umpiring isn't a easy job and decisions will go against or for teams and will be seen differently from the side lines. This is not to say the umpire got it right as you suggest. I've played enough footy to know what I see and what is a free kick. I will not umpire bash from the sidelines but I will give my opinion on here.

Not starting anything Bulldog, but one of the biggest problems is people "think" they know what is a free kick. Listen to any game and you will hear people screaming "baaaaaaalllll" as soon as someone with the ball is tackled - despite there being a little thing called "prior opportunity" that needs to be considered.

It is a fallacy that people who've played hundred of games "know" the rules. It simply isn't correct.

And yes, even the umpires need CONSTANT reminding of how to interpret the rules - all the way to the AFL.

Keep supporting everyone involved (and I am certain you are) - the game will survive!!

All good. Your correct in saying just cause you played the game means you know the rules, I'm confident that I do , not saying I will always be right as I'm sure umpires aren't either. It's when the obvious decisions are missed that causes confusion amongst junior players. I always instruct the boys not to back chat umpires and to accept and get on with the game. I actually take players off for 25s and arguing , done this on Sunday when the umpire pulled a guy up for bouncing to many times ( your allowed to bounce as many times as you like in under 13s) and another player said something which resulted in a free to the opposition.

As an umpire this does my head in.

Old football people just don't know the rules, particularly 'holding the ball'.

Re: SAAFL division 6 2014

Was it a big night at MP and/or FU Saturday night Morell? I was only there for a quick meal and a coke as I had a prior engagement which a few of the lads also had.

Night ended prematurely as I needed to escort young B.Steele home after he got kicked out from The Lion within 40 seconds of us getting in there.

The reason? He knicked a chip from a bowl a waiter was carrying.

From here on in someone who gets aggrieved at Mitchell Park will be awarded the "Stolen Chip" trophy.

And people wonder why he's a cult hero.

I demand a session on the piss with this man I reckon we might get on alright  He is great to go out with. The thing with Steeley is you will either get kicked out, or end up talking to hot girls. He is known as the best wing man in Adelaide and is responsible for many of the clubs marriages, relationships and dare I say it illegitimate babies.

Never been able to work out how a 5ft 2 hairy little man with no teeth and absolutely no sense of style can walk into a group of dead set glamours and two minutes later over they come. It's a gift.

Because its on here do we assume OS that its a HWE player???

All the best whoever it is anyway.
Yeah, young HWE player.
I haven't got rock solid confirmation on the ID of the kid involved but from what I can gather, he's got a knock to the head in a run-of-the-mill training drill and it's turned into a serious situation.

Yeah I heard the chopper fly in last night, after hearing sirens earlier. Always know its serious when the chopper is involved.
Would have been quite scary no doubt. :(

Footy hit him in the chest from a metre away, got air lifted to adelaide and is in a induced coma.. Sending well wishes to buzz Taylor and his family! He is a good young talent hopefully he is okay!!!

Re: Adelaide Plains Football League

Not sure if that was a deliberate act by the big fella or not. I didn't exactly see the event unfold but I've heard different stories by people from two wells saying it was and it wasn't.

What was the outcome? Injury/report??

Pontt knocked out concusion.
Report nil.

Couldn't have been that bad if Two Wells didn't lodge a report.

On a different note, and I hate talking about this because I realise our league is really struggling to get umpires, but.............I think we witnessed a poor umpiring performance on Saturday in the match between Mallala and Hamley, one umpire in particular was poor.

After bagging them last week, I thought I should compliment them this week after a fine job. The two umpires involved in Saturday's match between Mallala and Virginia I thought did a great job and were arguably the best we have had this season. I'm pretty sure anyone from Virginia would agree (maybe not Bascombe - possibly on report??).

Re: Adelaide Plains Football League

The league introduced the 'green shirt' boundary umpires a few years back to give young lads a pathway to field umpiring. It was jointly funded between the league and the participating clubs. By mid this year it was apparent that only one club was left involved and that the purpose was not being realised, so the program ceased.
Most clubs now roster preceding game players to do boundary on a volunteer basis. Problem arises if you start paying for boundary umpires, either the league provides them at cost (hard enough to provide field umpires), or the clubs pay for them (which comes from their coffers - either gate or bar profit etc.). There is a strong argument that if you start paying boundary umpires, what about the other volunteers - water boys, goal umpires, time keepers, interchange stewards.....

Boundary umpiring is a bloody tough gig. The club I used to be involved in through the SAAFL used to pay the boundary and goal umpires, the time keeper used to get a drink card, water boys and score board attendants used to get a kitchen voucher to get a pie, packet of chips and a drink or something similar.
the other volunteers used to get looked after at the end of season presentations with token gifts.

Which is great if the clubs are prepared to do this. Considering some player payment arrangements, it makes you wonder where the priorities lie.

Re: Adelaide Plains Football League

This season has got interesting, which is good to see, Hamley once clear on top now clinging with finger nails, look at it this way, Virginia/Balaklava/two wells/hamley can get max 8 points>Mallala 10 points from there games remaining, now this is impossible due to having to play each other at some stage, Although one side could do it, what will it take to finish where you want?, will the draw Mallala had be there undoing? Only the next 5 weeks will tell.

Would there have ever been a situation in a 7 team comp where teams 1 to 5 have been separated by 1 win so late in a season? Scary close atm
I don't think there would be many competitions in this situation, no.

There will be a few mini-finals over the next few weeks, but with percentage the way it is, Balaklava look to be the most vulnerable.

You would think the Peckers have to beat at a minimum three teams out of United (H), Virginia (A), HWE (A) and Mallala (H).

Really like the billing of this weekend's HB v TW encounter. The Roosters getting some back, the Bombers desperate to recapture the form that helped them take control of the competition for half the season. Mallala could possibly go top after being sixth after round 5.

The top 5 have now all played each other twice with the following results:
Mallala 5-3
Hamley 4-4
Virginia 4-4
Balaklava 4-4
Two Wells 3-5

but looking at the most recent results against each other gives an interesting indication of form:
Mallala 4-0
Balaklava 3-1
Virginia 2-2
Hamley 1-3
Two Wells 0-4

Two Wells last win against a top 5 side was 17th May against Balak and last win against a top 4 side was April 12th against Hamley.

United 1-39
Mallala 40+
Hamley 1-39

Re: Adelaide Plains Football League

Birchmore a lock for the starting 18 IMO. Best players aren't always the best guide IMO. Blokes like James Wildbore hardly ever get in the top 6 but rarely lose their position. Slok has also only cracked the BPs twice. Hard one to pick without internal knowledge I guess. I try to compile one for the paper each year. Here's last year's (attached). I might get the Informer statistician to put one together this season. Which by the way, no one is reading despite making several changes this year. Don't know what to do about that. Anyway....

Re: SAAFL Division 7 2014

I have read a lot of comment over the last 6 months of the current state and future direction of div 7. C Grade only divs and bad behaviour etc, etc. Whilst it's nice for marbles to speak on SHOC's behalf they are often not aligned with our own opinions.
Firstly we are a long way away from having a D grade for next season so you should not be including us in your C grade super league calculations. As C1 or C2 seems to be our C grades destination next year. We could hardly fill a C grade this year.
Secondly it has nothing to do with the A graders v C graders debate that you put forward that we are struggling for numbers. We have won flags and been competitive in its current state and SHOC's do love the challenge of playing A grade sides. Yes we might retain of few more players if we were in an easier div. But it has more to do with the increase of the opposition dick head factor that has seen a decline in player numbers for SHOCs. We have a lot of blokes these days living the dream overseas or working interstate. More than before and we can't help that. But the dickhead factor has effected the interest in the train once a week, young family man and full time job player that cannot be bothered playing anymore that we could rely on in the past.
We can cop the floggings from Mitchell Park, Ingle Farm, Hougton, Smithfield 2014 as they play the game in the right spirits and respect the word amateur. We have given them out and now we are on the receiving end but that's ok. I have had beers after the game with all these clubs after some beltings and the blokes have been great. It has been the flogs from other clubs that has made our experience in div 7 disappointing and there total lack of any understanding of the word AMATEUR.
Some of the things that have happened in Div 7 over the last 2 years have been appalling for amateur football. Get rid of this and div 7 in its current state is fine. The quicker clubs stop making excuses and address their issues the better things will be for everyone. Look at Smithfield for example and you can see what can be done.

Re: SAAFL division 5 2014

Finally back on deck after an epic weekend. Thanks to all the people who have congratulated us on here. It was a super effort from our lads to come from 5th against some quality sides. We honestly played our worst football for the year from round 16-18 but managed to re-group and set ourselves for the finals. We took basically no momentum into the finals but the confidence grew week to week and by the time the grand final came around we were flying.

Our emphasis was on pressuring the ball carrier and quick ball movement. A couple of great coaching moves to switch some players around and having almost a full squad to pick from certainly helped. On Saturdays game I was extremely happy with the way we settled. To be 4.0 to 0.1 at quarter time into a slight breeze was a great effort. I thought our blokes were first to the ball on most occasions and took the most of our chances. That then gave us the belief and momentum for the rest of the game.

IMO we probably got the better of the umpiring but that was principally because we put our head over the ball and generally got their first and the umps protected that. We did get a lot of free-kicks but I cant think of too many that weren't deserved. I do recall us getting a couple of lucky non-calls in the second 1/4 but they certainly didn't impact the result.

On the bloke with the mega-phone, surely people have to relax and just accept its a bit of banter. We were certainly copping it from the NH supporters and I'm sure if the scores had of been the other way around it would have got a lot worse. Crowds tend to sing when they're winning. Some will say its bad sportsmanship but to me its all a part of it. You should just laugh it off and get on with it, for people to say it was close to starting a riot is ridiculous - at the end of the day its amateur footy and should be about having a fun day out. I thought the crowd on a whole were great and I'm sure it would have been better if the result was closer.

For those commenting on #13 - it was also Warby's 150th game for the club on Saturday earning him life membership. He also played his 100th in the GF win over hope valley in 2008 - not a bad way to play your milestone games.

On a personal note, having been involved in all 4 of our A grade GF's since 2000 I can say coming from the elimination final is the best way to win them. The players just bond together over the 4 weeks and it certainly made celebrating with them over the last 3 days most enjoyable. We now have 3 days off the grog before the B&F on Friday night which I'm sure will be another huge night.

Re: SA vs My Foot Dr Bulls

30 min without a wicket

Sack Chuck, FFS!

I wonder if the club is aware that our coach is batting 3rd drop for Qld, not bad promotion after a few innings for Grange B's

Re: Ch9 AFL Division 5 - 2015

Sounds like their A-Grade coach is being a bit of a buffoon.

Why is that .Maybe the amount of money he wants is too much????

You might be on the money there.[/quote

Don't think he's even had a meeting with with footy club to even discuss money they don't want a bar of him cause there egos are to big

Re: Ch9 AFL Division 4 - 2015

The SAAFL has set a very dangerous precedent.

Unless a club is hit with unforeseeable and extreme circumstances, it should not be allowed to (in the 'A' grades), more or less, choose its division.

It gives a club with poor management an opt out of the consequence of its poor management and encourages other clubs to run their clubs with a greater element of risk because they know, if they screw it up, the SAAFL will save them.

What a cock up.

Sounds like you need to adopt a grading system like in social basketball. Play a few games and then allocate into divisions. Would solve all your issues. Don't need to. Make a GF, go up. Finish bottom two, go down. Simple. Or, it should be.

Re: Ch9 AFL Division 6 - 2015

I can understand why BL have taken the road they have, yes, they will cop some criticism, but having done it the hard way previously with Lockleys, It definitely took its toll on the committee, and the players. In saying that, Lockleys have had an amazing turn around since the early 2000's. In 2000, we finished third in div 4, but then followed a mass exodus of players back to the country. In 2001, we didn't win a game, 2002 we won 1 game, found ourselves in div6 with a very limited junior program. To the credit of all involved, a great deal of hard work from loyal club people, worked tirelessly to really kick start the juniors. I'm not sure of the numbers they have now, but Lockleys are seeing those kids, now coming through, and playing some really good senior footy, and now have consistent numbers for 3 senior sides . They did it the hard way, and I'm really sure all that hard work will see them gain the success they deserve over the coming years.

And that you can respect, not clubs who just bring out the big cheque book and then rub it in the faces off clubs who don't think people should be getting paid in Div 6.

These blokes who jump from club to club for money are just killing the hard work of loyal club men.

Re: Ch9 AFL Division 6 - 2015

Ok...

It's one thing to hang shit on the club for not learning their lesson but it's another to make it personal.

There are some very good people at Brahma. There are no doubt also some knobs at Brahma.

There are some very good people at Haven, your clubs is also not without it's knobs and you know it.

If we could please keep the discussion relevant to the club and leave reference to it's people out of the conversation that'd be great.

I think some people are just using this as an excuse to have a crack for the sake of having a crack. *cough* WUB, Jetters - cough*

Re: Ch9 AFL Division 7 - 2015

HDFC had their 'meet the coaches' night last night. Good night for a cold beer, dinner and to hear from our new coaching staff about the plan for 2015. Great night. Really looking forward to Jan 6...

AR did you name your new 10 grand sponsor Pal?
Well there's one new midfielder ;)

Nope, that's my back pay.
