Re: Zones in football

Would it seriously make that much difference? Thinking it was something like netball:

Mids/Ruck/Wings could travel anywhere on the ground
Full Forward, Forward Pockets couldn't go past CHF
Full Back, Back Pockets couldnt go past CHB
Centre Half Forward line could travel anywhere from Goal Line to CHB line
Centre Half Back line could travel anywhere from Goal Line to CHF line

Don't think that is a great deal different to now..

How are you going to police that? Umpires are gonna have to know who's playing what position at all times. Hmmm....how about BIBS with some sort of positional coding on them....

Re: Things that give you the sh1ts

I've said before that I'm a Christian fella and I don't really have an issue with Gay Marriage... in my opinion.

My sister in law is gay and she wants to marry her partner... that's cool by me. Having seen where she has come from, trying to commit suicide on more than one occassion, running away etc etc she then came out and she is a relatively normal person now... she is still a massive space cadet but she is happy...

I just am really disappointed in the vitriol from both sides of the equation, there is so much hatred and it is just really uncool... suggesting that if someones view differs from your own then they should kill themselves is irresponsible and down right stupid...

Suicide is not something to joke about... it has hit my family hard before and I really think that joking (or not) is just really poor form

Man that sounds a bit too hippy doesnt it...

Re: HFL Division 1 (Central)

Now look I know I may be considered somewhat of a dinosaur in football terms having been out of the game in a playing capacity for a few decades now but ................ all this talk online, in the media and in the local Courier newspaper has goaded me to make my first post on this forum.

Nobody admits to liking the umpires, we all know this, and this is exacerbated by some pitiful grandstanding performances in the AFL most weekends which arcs us all up. But from where I sit in the comfort of my trusty stead at the footy in the hills most weekends, we are pretty blessed with, generally speaking, an honest bunch of hardworking officials who on most occasions go above and beyond their duties every Saturday during the season. The game is umpired like the SANFL used to be before this years weird rule changes. I personally know some of these blokes and they really do love their job. Yes it is a paid gig but I don’t think many of us would run around for about 6 - 8km’s in a morning game and then another 12 – 14km’s for an A grade game for the dollars on offer.

To read that an experienced A Grade coach had tee’d off at young ex SANFL umpire with a tirade of expletives during a half time break where the umpire apparently HAD to traverse this area to use the toilets, was very disappointing indeed. But to then have an article published in the Courier almost blaming the young umpire for the outburst is totally out of line. Basically inferring the umpires performance had goaded the coach to abuse him? I think the old Fossil who wrote that letter to the sports editor may still be stuck back 56 years ago if he thinks this kind of behaviour is OK in 2016.

Also this week it appears our excellent local rag has decided to get awfully personal with yet another very experienced ex SANFL umpire by naming and shaming him in the Hahndorf vs Uraidla write up for one, yep one, “ridiculous free kick”. Whilst I was not at the game I did share a cold one or two during the week with a couple of old Hahndorf players who were at the game (for past players day) and they assured me the performance of both umpires in the A Grade game for the day was pretty good in the view that they went mainly un-noticed for most of the day, and most certainly had no effect on Uraidla winning the game.

I thought I may be getting a little sensitive in my old age being a former club boundary umpire from many moons ago. So today I went back through the weekends footy reports in the Courier imagining I would see numerous references to “ridiculous” errors from players being personally noted also. As we see for ourselves clangers happen on a pretty regular basis to every player and every club. But to my astonishment poor old Kent Shillitoe from Mt Barker (sorry Kent) was the only footballer in the hills to make a mistake over the weekend worth mentioning in the Courier ?
Go figure, over 350 players mentioned in the reports and this poor bloke was the only one who had “a poor disposal”.
Not even a Red or Yellow card was a big enough "ridiculous" mistake to get a mention.
And likewise poor old Umpire Ross Wall was the only umpire to pay a “ridiculous free kick”.

Thank goodness the Uri lad didn’t allegedly flash his member at the Umpire, the poor old maggot would have been accused of goading him to do it !
Seriously?

Re: Port Adelaide 2016

( The email I have sent the club )

Good morning,

Thank you for taking the time to consider this correspondence.

I, like many other people, found myself arriving late to the Round 12 match on Saturday June 11 at Adelaide Oval due to unforseen delays on the Adelaide rail network. As I walked across the River Torrens Bridge the siren blew to start the match. I got to my seat at around the 4 minute mark.

When the state government announced yesterday that the club had been given a payment of $50,000 to compensate those inconvenienced by the delays I though this is a perfect opportunity for the PAFC to give something back, let us make no bones about it, we have been on the end of some generous financial support in recent years.

I heard KT last night note that the money would be spent on additional match day entertainment, fireworks, dragon boats in the Torrens amongst other things. I must say I am very, very disappointed to hear the money will be wasted in this manner. Wasted indeed.

I urge the club, I urge the executive to consider the options available to us in regards to spending this money. We have an amazing relationship with the Foodbank charity organisation and the Little Hero’s Foundation here in South Australia does exceptional work with children and their families going through tough times.

Those of us privileged enough to be able to afford a ticket to an AFL match, get on free public transport to head to a safe environment in good health should not be taking this for granted.

Please forward this correspondence to the executive and ask they consider splitting in whatever manner they see fit the $50,000 towards various charities that would immensely appreciate the financial support, the likes of which they would rarely if ever receive.

Regards,

Re: Port Adelaide 2018

We surely can’t be blaming Ken for basic skill errors? We are terrible by foot, we simply can’t kick. I like Ken as coach but clearly something is on the nose.

I HAVEN'T SEEN THE HAWKS GAME yet but I assume we still look side ways the second we’re under pressure? Been happening all year, we can certainly blame Ken for that. And we’re simply not skillful enough to play that style of footy.

Need 13 wins to guarantee finals I have us finishing on 12 wins. IMO we must get 2 of the next 3 to get to that 13 wins mark.

I’m certainly not as optimistic about our season as Boon is. But a week is a longtime in footy, GWS we’re shutting the doors last week now in the flag race, 3 weeks ago Goddard and Heppell we’re retired!

Time will tell.

6-4 and 8th, haven't played anywhere near our best footy.

Re: Port Adelaide 2018

I think only ‘hot spot ‘ would be able to tell with this one

I agree. Someone mentioned it yesterday (Kornes or Lloyd), why don't they have it like the big bash that the goal post lights up if it hits it or something along those lines.. Might look silly for the obvious posters, but one's in this case where it can have an affect on the game would be perfect

Dude at work has always said if the ball hits the post and goes in the goal area it should be a goal, we are the only sport that doesn't play like that.

Rebounds back into play or goes through the point area, then it's a behind.
I mentioned that very point on here and someone ( maybe Stan) ripped into me.
I think it has merit.
Technology still needs human interaction which is where errors occur.
Off the post and in is fine by me.
It'll stop all the lala power people whinging!

I'm all for this, the more interpretation we take away from umpires the better.

Re: Restaurant & Pub Reviews

My girlfriend and I went to La Trattoria on Saturday night and it was very nice! Thanks to HH3 for the recommendation.
We shared a Pizza bread, I had the Fettuccine Primavera and a beer she the Spinach Gnocchi and a wine.
The place was packed and we had to wait awhile for our mains but it was fine as the lady serving us was really nice and welcoming, she was flat out but still made the effort to come and see us and let us know there will be a wait. The serving sizes were generous and I got so full I couldn't finish mine. I have to say her Gnocchi tasted better than my Fettuccine. We had a win with the price as the lady serving us was so busy she forgot to add the Pizza bread to our bill.

Re: Glenelg v Central District

South Adelaide again?
Apart from finally being granted their current base (by the state govt?). Unfortunately a little late to sell their identity to an area already enjoying a strong football culture with the local leagues at one end, and a glitzy national league represented by 2 South Australian sides at the other.
They'd have to be the unluckiest club in Australia. A quick read of their history shows almost incessant shuffling of their base from what used to be just south of North terrace to suburbs not even half the age of the actual club, not to mention dramatically undersized recruiting zones that left them throwing money as their only avenue to two flags in the '30s. It's a wonder they survived. Recently they always seem to bear the brunt of whatever new controversial draft is implemented by the AFL and then don't seem to receive much reimbursement for it.
Rant over.
P.S. not my club, I just hate seeing honest clubs/ people being screwed around.

Mate, all of this and you haven't got your knickers in a twist about them running out of stout once!

Re: Things that you rate!

This might be a bit self indulgent, but it's not the intention ... About 9 year ago my body started doing some funky things and two years later I was diagnosed with MS. Doctor said it was a pretty aggressive form and there was a strong chance I'd be in nappies and a wheelchair 1-2 years later. Despite some dark moments behind closed doors in the early years, Ive generally managed to put up a good front and it's not something I really discuss much with people'. Anyhoo, despite relatively staying on top of it mentally, I've always been a bit nervous about the day I needed to move to a chair permanently and I've been pretty convinced for a while that day would arrive this year or early 2021.

Like I said I'm not the type to openly discuss my issues, but having just come back from the rehab specialist who thinks I've done a great job with my physical therapies and that Im not in any immediate need to become wheelchair bound, Im pretty f***in chuffed lol and felt the need to blurt it out. No doubt I'll be embarressed about this post later, but pumped to not have to worry about it for the immediate future :D :partyman:

Re: Restaurant & Pub Reviews

Thanks for the recommendations cracka , bang on the mark.

Stopped in LOT.100 for a gin and the place was so impressive and smelt so good we decided to get the salami, chilli and honey pizza while we were there. Google Maps took me through the back way so my new car was filthy from the dirt roads  . I could easily spend a day there, the staff are brilliant and everything about the place oozes appeal. Will be heading up there on a warm Sunday with hopefully a driver so I can enjoy the spoils.

Next stop was Nepenthe Wines for some tastings, we could sample a couple for free or pay $10 to hook into half a dozen, not sure how it all worked out but the hostesses just kept bringing more out to try so we just done the right thing. loved the Primitivo, Shiraz and the Cab Sauv, grabbed a few bottles upon exiting, will return for sure, the grassy knoll overlooking the vineyards would make the perfect lazy Sunday afternoon while grazing at a platter with a red in hand.

Next stop was the Ambleside Distillery, picturesque place, service was brilliant as was the product, couldn't stick around long as I'd had a few here and there and had the car, probably could've walked from where we were staying but we were just winging it.

Trying to decipher where to eat and I ended up insisting on the Hahndorf Old Mill (the steakhouse), I was reluctant to eat traditional German food as it all seemed very high cholesterol food and I'm a bit take it or leave it with German cuisine, for the prices I didn't want to be disappointed, hindsight suggests I should've been a bit more daring.

The Old Mill would've been a perfect way to spend the afternoon, they had normal beers and a huge betting auditorium, it had a northern suburbs feel to it though, staff were nice and the food was as it read, my steak was cooked fine but I do a better salmon than what they served up, was a 7.5 all up though. The Italian restaurant "Gepetto's" seemed like it was going off, probably should've gone there.

Had a couple of beers at the other pubs at different stage and the ambience for the town is excellent, just couldn't find a place to get a 6 pack to takeaway though, had to drive to Stirling.

Stopped at the German Inn for breakfast on the way out, grabbed the German Feast to share to which they adjusted to suit without charging, it was perfect.

Overall, I found the accommodation in Hahndorf a little pricey for what you get but it's bloody popular so who am I to judge, it was actually my first ever time there, we only stayed Sunday night so if I was to do it again I would get a studio apartment and sort some tours out instead of driving around.

Re: The Voice Referendum - Oct 2023

I am voting Yes. The simple and short reason being that if it was good enough for a vast majority of Indigenous leaders from all around the country to make agreement on how they see fit to move forward as a nation, via the Uluru Statement of the Heart, then it is good enough for me. Who am I to stand in the way by voting no?

I don't think many think the Indigenous Australians shouldn't be added in the constitution and be recognised as the first people here, but what good is words without some action? Aren't we beyond telling them how things should be - as Dutton is saying by voting the Voice down and calling for another referendum.

The detail of the Voice is not for the Constitution. The idea of having the Voice is what we are voting on. The detail of it is to be worked out in parliament and it will change in time. It is a practical representation in the constitution to go along with the symbolic words.

It was a pretty amazing effort to come up with a consensus on the Uluru Statement of the Heart. This is pretty good reading on how it came about: https://law.unimelb.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/3230377/MF19-Australia-paper.pdf

Then there is the Makaratta that will come. That is the truth telling and the treaty, or agreements between the indigenous and the government(s). A final closing chapter to move forward together that will probably take years and years.

Nothing is ever perfect and not everyone will agree. There is the deep-seated conservatism and fear spread by Dutton and co. Then there is the more radical chain of thought of we need Treaty now, from Jacinta Price and co.

I found this podcast with Thomas Mayo good to listen to to get an understanding of what we are to vote on and get a bit more understanding of the Treaty side of things.
https://shows.acast.com/e9f65874-5f00-4584-a408-6a0addba4f9c/64fd64dd5dfffc0011a85915

I am an admirer of Noel Pearson. He is highly intelligent, well-learned and a brilliant speaker. If you haven't heard him speak, I would recommend looking him up on YouTube. Here is one from his speech in Adelaide earlier this year - you can skip straight to the 25 minute mark: https://youtu.be/5kT1WyQYZvI?si=bUzI74xemznVplTE&t=1505

Celebrating Australia Day as a kid and young adult. The Test Match, the fireworks. The Sydney Olympics, our cricket team dominating, Crocodile Dundee and the Americas Cup - we were the best country in the world. Then the last 15 years or so, as each Australia Day has gone by, a feeling of guilt to use the word celebrate. It felt more like ANZAC Day. A day of commemoration. I needed to read Noel Pearson's Declaration of Australia to sum up how we might be able to move forward, with pride and as one. That is to acknowledge, and recognise, the three parts that make Australia. Not everyone in this country has been as lucky as you or I, but there is no reason why we can't all be, moving forward. The link is here and I'll copy the Declaration of Australia below: https://capeyorkpartnership.org.au/in-the-spirit-of-getting-the-ball-rolling-noel-pearson-offers-this-declaration-of-australia-and-the-australian-people/

In the spirit of getting the ball rolling, Noel Pearson offers this ‘Declaration of Australia and the Australian People’

WHEREAS THREE STORIES MAKE AUSTRALIA:

the Ancient Indigenous Heritage which is its foundation, the British Institutions built upon it, and the adorning Gift of Multicultural Migration:

And whereas Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes were the First Nations of the Australian continent and its islands, possessed under ancient laws and customs, according to the reckoning of culture, from the Creation, according to the common law, from time immemorial, and according to science for more than 65 millennia. This is a spiritual notion: the ancestral tie between the land, or mother nature, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were born therefrom, remain attached thereto, and must one day return thither to be united with their ancestors. We recognise and honour the First Nations who discovered Australia as their sovereign possession, the oldest continuing civilisation in the world.

And whereas those who sailed the First Fleet landing at Sydney Cove carried upon their shoulders the common law of England, when the sovereignty of the British Crown was proclaimed. The rule of law, parliamentary government and the Australian English language have their provenance in Britain. From eyes on board ship, this was a settlement, and from eyes on shore, an invasion. We recognise the eve of the 25th and the dawn of the 26th January 1788 as a profound time for all of us, when Ancient Australia became the New Australia. We recognise and honour the Britons and Irish – convict and free – who founded our institutional heritage, making our Commonwealth from 1901, a great democracy of the globe.

And whereas peoples the earth over brought their multitude of cultural gifts to Australia. That we celebrate diversity in unity makes us a beacon unto the world. We recognise and honour our New Australians. When we renounced the White Australia policy, we made a better Commonwealth. We show that people with different roots can live together, that we can learn to read the image-bank of others, that we can look across the frontiers of our differences without prejudice or illusion.

NOW THEREFORE, with earnest and open hearts and strong desire to fill the lacuna, after more than two centuries, we make this Declaration of Australia and the Australian People, to see our reflections in each other, and recognise one and all:

Our history is replete with shame and pride, failure and achievement, fear and love, cruelty and kindness, conflict and comity, mistake and brilliance, folly and glory. We will not shy from its truth. Our storylines entwine further each generation. We will ever strive to leave our country better for our children.

We will honour the Uluru Statement from the Heart and make good upon it. Whilst English is the shared language of our Commonwealth, mother tongues name the country and sing its song-lines – and we do not want for them to pass from this land. They are part of the cultural and natural wonder of our country that is the campfire of our national soul, and the pledge of care and custody we owe our ancestral dead and unborn descendants.

After the battles of our frontier wars fell silent, diggers from the First Nations joined their Settler and New Australian comrades in the crucibles of Gallipoli, the Western Front and Kokoda, and there distilled the essence of our values:

That our mateship is and will always be our enduring bond.

That freedom and the fair go are our abiding ethic.

That our virtues of egality and irreverence give us courage to have a go.

That we know we can and always will count on each other.

Three stories make us one: Australians.

Re: Cambodia/Vietnam

Depends what you like doing.
We have been a few times and Vietnam has big weather fluctuations between the South, North and Central parts.
We have been in mid July and HaNoi was pushing 40 and had a heap of rain with humidity at 90% every day. HCMC was low 30’s and much drier humidity wise. Infrastructure is still very much third world so travel can be a bit of a chore but domestic flights are cheap. Most people do the triangle in Vietnam of flying into HaNoi/HCMC and then over to DaNang and/or HaLong bay betfore flying out of HCMC/HaNoi. You can tack on a side tour to Cambodia from HCMC. Where you go depends entirely on what you want to do or see plus your personal interests

Re: WEIGHT LOSS + the challenge

For me today marks 12 months since no lollies, chocolate, cake, biscuits, ice cream etc. I haven’t wavered at all even over Christmas. Moderate beer drinking basically weekends only and small amounts.

I’m a big lad, throw to my father’s side, and generally put on weight just looking at these things no matter what I do.

Have lost two shirt and one and a half pant sizes and feel so much better for eating none of it. Sultanas is my favorite luxury.
