Re: Trans Tasman Trophy

All this hype over NZ in Tests is just that. They haven’t got the stamina at Test level to maintain their intensity and their Test depth is poor.

I’ll say it again, when you win the toss anywhere in the World apart from when it’s a huge English or Kiwi green top then you need to bat first.
Correct. Astonishing that some test captains can't work that one out.

Re: Trans Tasman Trophy

That's always been the rule.

Not sure why the bowler shouldn't get the credit - it was the batsman missing (or merely edging) the delivery which led to him being caught out of his ground, rather than a run out which doesn't have anything to do with the delivery.

Of course in the reverse situation, where the batsmen misses it and attempts to run a bye but he or his partner gets run out, it would make no sense for the bowler to get credit for a 'stumping' because it wasn't really his delivery that caused the dismissal.

Re: Leadership Groups

There should be 1 captain, 1 vice captain, that's it.

All other older players should set an example and act like leaders.

No need for a formal 'leadership group' IMO. You shouldn't need a title to demonstrate leadership and having a clearly defined leadership group is almost like saying that senior players not in it don't need to show leadership.

Re: SANFL Clubs

I think regardless of your stance on the AFL reserves gaining delight from the demise of something people covet is pretty ordinary behaviour.

Who the heck covets them?

Magpies crowds have halved since they became the reserves, while at the same time they've made three grand finals, in contrast to their missing the finals most of the time between 2000-2013.

I don't doubt your devotion Booney but you're in a very small group.

Anyway I seem to recall the SANFL had to talk them into keeping the Magpies when the Power franchise was set up. It's pretty clear the Power would be happy for an excuse to get rid of them. (Although I think our celebrations are premature, as much as I'd like it to be true.)

Also the quote of yours I highlighted is a straw man argument. The vast majority of us want to see the reserves gone. Apart from UKF, delight in potentially seeing the Magpies go is only because it'll mean no reserves (assuming the Ravens get the arse). And I think you know that.

Our hatred for the reserves infiltration runs many orders of magnitude deeper than our dislike of Port and I for one would have no problem with a standalone Magpies returning à la 1997-2013.

Re: Jack Oatey Medallists

I think there is a Ph.D. for someone smarter than me (cue Mal) in the demise of West Torrens. At the start of the decade West Torrens were one of the richest, if not the richest clubs in Australia. Their major benefactor was Ossie O'Grady, a former player and it is not unfair to say that he was the Allan Bond of the day. Under O'Grady's presidency, West Torrens were able to recruit triple Brownlow Medallist and Essendon premiership coach, Dick Reynolds to coach the team, they recruited young Essendon star, Bob Shearman, who had been best player for the "Dons" as they were then known, in the 1959 Grand Final, they outbid Carlton for young Wagga Wagga star, Geoff Kingston and outbid North Melbourne for then Hamilton, Victoria star, Tracey Braidwood. They also lured Neil Hawke back from Western Australia and after a long stand off from Port they managed to get a clearance for Hawke,. They helped get Lindsay Head the leasehold of the Cross Keys Hotel and Bob Shearman the leasehold of the Waverley Hotel.
Then there was the 1961 Credit Squeeze and Ossie O'Grady's company, Reid Murray, collapsed, one of the biggest if not the biggest corporate collapses in history. It was purported to be worth 66,000,000 pounds at the time which I think equates to over $2 billion in today's money. Not only did Ossie lose his fortune, but so did a lot of other West Torrens backers. Ossie remained as President but was challenged by Geoff Hallett of Hallett's bricks at the end of 1964. Shearman, in particular, backed O'Grady who won but then Shearman left the club days later. Torrens struggled for money for the next 25 years until their merger.
Without going into too much detail I think there were several factors at play in Torrens' decline from the 60s onwards:
1. Their sugar daddy running out of money as RIG has mentioned
2. Declining on-field performances leading to more declining on-field performances. Despite having a number of top players in the second half of the 50s and the 60s, and finishing top in '63, people forget the Torrens never won a final after 1954. Maybe depth was the problem. But the losing culture had started to set in before the overall financial decline of the club. Although Torrens attracted massive crowds in the 60s when they were doing well, the lack of finals success surely had an impact on supporter numbers and in turn finances. In the mid-50s they possibly had more supporters than any club except Norwood and Port. Compare the number of finals Port and Norwood won over the next say 20 years to Torrens (zero).
3. Proportionately fewer Anglo-Australians in the West Torrens city area due to migration, making the player (and supporter) base a little thinner or at least meaning the club needed to work a bit harder to develop players. A slight reduction in the zone in '64 wouldn't have helped. Also, it happened later, but giving the north eastern suburbs zone to Norwood, just when it was starting to pay dividends, didn't help either.

Most of the early American presidents were slave owners. All Australian prime ministers up to the 60s or 70s supported the White Australia Policy. Basically every public figure before WWII was opposed to homosexuality being legal. Etc. Etc.

Re: I need to know....

Having it as a rental property opens it up to CGT - whether you're paying/claiming interest doesn't matter.

There are some exceptions to CGT - e.g. you can treat a property you've moved out of as your 'main residence', even if you live elsewhere, for up to 6 years if it's used to produce income.

Of course, this means that the new property you're living in may be subject to CGT, as you can't use the 'main residence' exception for two houses at once, except while you're moving.

Still, if you're earning rental $ from your old house, it might be worth copping a small CGT liability.

The ATO has information on its website about all the different scenarios on owning two houses at once.

Car situation isnt ideal. Her choice is either a Kluger tank or a corolla manual...

corolla manuals do exist, but to say that they are thin on the ground is an understatement...

Yeah I've got one!
Those are the two cars we own for her to learn in is what I meant I would definitely start with the manual.

First lesson would be finding friction point and learning to drive at 1 km/h, without stalling, stopping or speeding up.

The lesson is control.

If they can learn how to control the car at the slowest of speeds - counterintuitively, the hardest thing in a manual - they can control it at higher speeds.

I wouldn't start with an auto because it's almost too easy - thus a false sense of control might be experienced by the learner.

Why? Because people are stupid and those calling him a dictator are scaring many people into thinking he actually is. I suspect that many of those calling Andrews a dictator have never lived in a dictatorship.

Re: US

The Democrats are no longer the true Democrats of yesteryear they have been hijacked by the radical left Marxists.

This is probably the most insane thing you've said on this forum - and that is seriously saying something.

The Democratic Party is not remotely left wing. Comparing it to Australian political parties, its economic and social policies are most similar to that of the Liberal Party. The Democrats are far more right wing than the Australian Labor Party, whom no serious commentator would accuse of being radical or Marxist.

The reason AOC and Bernie Sanders (technically an independent, albeit one who ran for the Democrat nomination) receive so much attention is because they are a long way from the vast majority of the party.

If the Democrats in America appear even remotely left wing, it's because of the way the Republicans have degenerated in the last 50 years from being a traditional conservative party to being a lunatic asylum for paranoid reactionaries to whom truth and reality are of no concern.

Of course the Democrats will appear left wing when up against the Republican Party. But there are fewer greater proponents of capitalism than the Democratic caucas and nothing Biden is proposing is even remotely radical by any terrestrial standards.

Re: US

LOL LOL LOL LOL

I literally named two of those politicians in my post.

And you've illustrated my point - those 5 get so much media attention precisely because they are so different to the other 274 Democrat representatives and senators.

You may have noticed that those folks barely got any time during the convention - Bernie got one speech due to his winning a primary, and AOC was only given two minutes. That's because they don't represent the mainstream of the party.

The idea that Joe Biden is a puppet to the 5 you've mentioned (radicals is a bit over-the-top by the way - read their policies) is ludicrous. Biden won the nomination, not Sanders. Like most Democrats, Biden is, if anything, a puppet to big business and free market economics - 36 years of Senate voting proves that.

Also, would you care to tell us what radical policies Biden is proposing?

The most major policy issue of the Obama/Biden era was probably universal healthcare. Is this a radical policy? It was adopted in Australia in 1984, so given the Liberal Party have been in office for 18 years since that point, and haven't even considered removing it, I guess they're also Marxist radicals.

I don't usually enter the politics forum - I don't hold strong views myself on these matters - but I do value truth and reality, and the idea that the US Democratics/Joe Biden are left-wing radicals is utterly ridiculous, even by your outlandish standards.
