Re: SANFL 2024

Integrate SANFLW into the comp possibly the replace the reserves.

You had me up until this point. This is what the VFL did and it killed their comp.
You lose the pathway from U18 to League with no reserves. How do you transition to playing against decent men's teams without it?
As far as costs go, most weren't getting paid during the COVID years either, so costs would be minimal. A lot of clubs encourage or insist senior players get sponsorship as well, so you lose that income straight away.

The rest of your points are valid, but removing the ressies in favour of the SANFL would be a fast track to failure.

I dont disagree with what you're saying it was just an idea.

How do you transition to playing against decent men's teams without it?

I guess my theory was based on players making the step up from playing country/ammos to playing SANFL league now as top up players.

Any way the main point Im trying to convey is there is plenty the league could do when unencumbered with the afl teams.

Re: SANFL 2024

Getting rid of the AFL reserves teams will be a good start.
Another problem is traditional SANFL fans are getting old and dying, not sure what we can do about that. Cheaper anti-aging drugs?

Whilst I'm not a fan of the AFL Reserves teams in the comp, I don't think getting rid of the Reserves teams will help crowd numbers increase.
But increasing the Salary Cap will help keep some talent in the competition as the players won't be as tempted at 25+ years of age to go to country and amateur clubs for large $$$ packages. Keeping talent in the comp will help keep crowd numbers up because who wants to watch an average brand of footy?
The competition won't survive if the mass exodus of talented players continue.
I'm also not sure why SANFL clubs continue to announce 18-year-old unknown players from interstate unless they are the next Harley Reid, this surely can't continue, it's embarrassing.
The SANFL could also spend some money in marketing the competition, and putting on some new positions in marketing.

A few suggestions, would like to hear other views?

AFl reserves leaving will be great. We wont have Koch on his annual rant about how shit the comp is. Cant wait for them to go to the vfl. They wont even make finals in that comp.

Why have club(s) in the comp who refuse to promote the comp. The sooner they leave the better IMHO!!!!!

The crows would bring what 200 people to a game and then do little to no promotion. Hate to say we saw all this happening a decade ago but................

THen its about marketing. As WHUFC pointed out standard isnt the concern ie AFLW.

Increase the cap $100K
Bring in marquee players (funded by SANFL)
Double headers at Adelaide Oval (after a Thursday night AFL game at Adelaie Oval)
When Port and crows go to vfl dont allow vfl games within SA, as it will take money away from local clubs.
Drop entry prices
Newly formed Player retention schemes
SANFL trade periods/drafts
Free/cheap entry for Uni students
Engage AFLPA to assist with setting up programs($$$) to help transition players who leave the afl system early on in their careers
Leave channel 7 seek alternate media providers (kayo/10) who will invest and market the comp (without having to worry about if it upsets afl)
GEt control back of the auskick programs
Integrate SANFLW into the comp possibly the replace the reserves.
Get some proper coverage on adelaidenow (Every Wednesday a full page SANFL wrap kind of thing)

If there is a positive of the afl reserves whilst not ideal the fact that player can transition from ammo/country footy into league football via the top up program. So do we really need a reserves comp ?? Is it a cost the clubs need and it frees up more salary cap.

We got 7000 to a game this year so all is not loss.

You are very narrow minded Wedgie... think outside your club mate.
It's already happening... the SANFL will be defunct 5 years after the AFL sides exit. Bookmark this.

South Australian of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much you willing to put on it Mr Clueless Self absorbed Crows fan ???

Im assuming all country leagues and the SAAFL will be gone as well ??

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Obviously won't be completely smooth sailing but cancers out = fantastic opportunity for the SANFL.
They now have a fantastic marketing opportunity.

What changes are you making, just some suggestions not all logistically do-able:

-8 teams, top 4, 3 week finals series, I'm keeping finals at AO. Probably going with 21 game season playing each team 3 times....probably have preferred less games however.

-Grand Final to move back to the October long weekend Sunday. Could even be a Saturday hey??

-Lower the entrance price. I understand this has a flow on effect with memberships prices etc but i think it has to happen.

-Me personally i am opening the season with a gather round style day at AO. Free entry for all, carnival atmosphere, lots and lots for the kids to do, including meet and greet with players etc. Make it as interactive as possible. Surely if we can have a kick to kick on AO after a game we could get permission to let supporters onto AO for the quarter time huddles etc. Clubs to have membership marquees on the day etc.

-Every club must play one home game in their country zone.

-Could there be the potential to have u/16's , u/18's, reserves, league play at the same ground on the same day. More chance these families, players, friends etc will come and then stay on to watch other games. Yes the ovals will get smashed on the day but they will also get weekends with no footy on them.

-Crazier idea but could the SANFL offer a bonus premiership point for teams who score over 100pts in a game. Incentivize attacking football, keep games interesting to the final siren. If you are playing. Would also push the clubs to make sure their grounds don't end up as bog heaps.

-Another crazy idea and somewhat stolen from the AFL/NFL, but would you have a mid-season trade period. That way you might stop fringe reserve blokes who leave in June to country teams as they could get another SANFL crack. Would get some media exposure as well you would imagine.

Anyway just thoughts as i sit in a lecture style zoom meeting.

Think having a carnival style weekend on Adelaide Oval would be a great idea, four games on the same day. Not sure about 21 game season, maybe a 14 game season but have a night pre season comp played out over the first three weeks with that carnival weekend being first up and the following games being played at Adelaide Oval as well. 17 games seems reasonable. Just a thought

Clubs will want more home games than what they get now not less.

14 wont do

Re: CDFC 2023

It’s been a significant couple of days at the Ponderosa with the signing of Jack on Wednesday and today, we welcome the signing of Dayne Posthuma from Queanbeyan (ACT) and GWS (Academy/VFL).

Dayne, 19, is a 198cm tall defender. He represented the Allies in this year’s National U18 Championships and has drawn comparisons to the current Bulldog defender, Brinn Little, who made a significant impact on our club during the 2023 season.

In 2023, Posthuma played seven senior VFL games for GWS after starting the season with his home State club, Queanbeyan, in Canberra.

A strong and courageous defender with a reliable, at times thumping kick, Dayne will make it tough for his opponents to get hold of the footy.

Football Manager Mark Ross had the following to say about Dayne:

“Dayne will be crucial to our defense as he brings the extra centimeters we have lacked when playing against teams with multiple tall forward options. He can read the play in front of him well, defend first, and then use the ball effectively with his kick when we have it. This will make life easier for our midfielders and forwards.”

Welcome to the Doggies, Dayne!

Re: INS and OUTS for 2024

Dogs have officially announced their 8th recruit. 19yo 203cm Harry Howe. Seen as a longer term prospect as he learns his craft under tutelage of Buckets McKenzie

The Central District Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of Gippsland Power and Morwell Ruckman, Harvey Howe.

Harvey, 19, who stands at an impressive 203cm and weighs 103kg, has spent most of his football journey developing his craft within the Coates League in the Victorian U18 competition.

A super-competitive performer in and around the center bounce, Harvey has excellent ruck craft. He will be given time to continue his development under the watchful eye of our newly appointed ruck coach, Jason “Buckets” McKenzie.

Football Manager Mark Ross added the following comments about Harvey.

“Harvey is a high-quality individual who is super keen to take his game to the next level. We see Harvey and (2023 recruit) Ryan Pickering as long-term ruck giants who will offer us plenty of options not only in the ruck but also as forward 50 targets. When gathering information about Harvey, two things were consistently mentioned: his competitiveness and his character. He is a very popular teammate with a big upside to his game, with excellent athleticism and an all-around solid skill level.”

Howe is our 8th new signing since the conclusion of the 2023 season. We welcome him to the Ponderosa and look forward to watching his journey.

Re: INS and OUTS for 2024

The Dogs have signed a 205cm raw ruckman, and are hopeful to round off their signings with a 188cm, 20yo mid who has played 30+ games in the WAFL.
Will make a total of nine recruits of which seven are high possibilities of league round one.
The two taller lads are longer term investments that will benefit greatly from the newly appointed ruck coach Buckets McKenzie.
Any news on possibe WAFL recruit.

Hes a bailey Smith lookalike and training the house down. Fingers crossed

Re: Rd 2 Dogs v Crows @ Elizabeth Sat 2:30

Dogs looking solid. The midfield additions of Barry and Dittmar add class and grunt. Gaspar adds class upfront.

Pudney had a good debut, Presbury to half back is working well.

Pearce kicked 5, that cost me a round.

When is the last time dogs started the season 2-0.
