Re: 2019 McCallum Tomkins Medal

Congratulations to Harrison Magor from North Adelaide who has won the 2019 McCallum Tomkins Medal!
Harrison is now the fourth Rooster in six years to win the U18 McCallum Tomkins Medal!
Well done to the young feller. Hopefully we'll see something of him at league level before he vanishes in a puff of AFL draft smoke.
This year is his draft year so he will be hoping to vanish in the puff of AFL draft smoke in a couple months
Wouldn't be too many playing u18s in SA that get drafted from there would there?
Most would be playing at least ressies if not league before an AFL club looks at you.
That is normally right. Think he only played 10 games then played state footy and reserves plus school footy. Think he's probably a late pick or rookie if getting drafted. The last 2 winners pudney and woodcock have been drafted but woodcock won it as an under 17 and pudney only got drafted because he was a category B listed player (Asian).

Re: SANFL Junior codes

Watched u/12 GF yesterday. Pretty good game and as a neutral supporter thought the 2 umpires were pretty good (not sure the crowd agreed with me). Was disappointed that one kid spent the whole game on the bench. I know its a GF but surely every kid should get a run. All the scoring was at one end so could've easily put him at FF if didn't want him around the footy. Still a lot of work needs to be done with junior coaching, the yelling and carrying on from the sidelines was embarrassing, its u/12's not the AFL.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Former Central District coach Roy Laird slams SANFL over concessions offered to AFL clubs
Recently retired Central District coach Roy Laird is passionate about the SANFL, but he is angry at the help being offered to the league’s two AFL clubs.
Central District coaching legend Roy Laird has not held back in slamming the SANFL for pandering to the “squealing” of Adelaide’s AFL clubs.
The now-retired seven-times premiership coach took a parting shot at the league, claiming attractive concessions granted to the AFL clubs’ reserves after the 2018 season had significantly strengthened those teams to the detriment of the competition.
The introduction of base payments for top-up players had created an unfair situation, according to Laird, and allowing the reserves teams to have 17 AFL-listed players in the finals gave Adelaide and Port Adelaide a massive advantage given they could attract superior players.
Laird also noted comments from Port Adelaide when it said it would be putting all its resources into the state league finals following the Power’s demise and he argued the SANFL premiership was just a consolation prize. However, he said the SANFL flag is the ultimate prize for the traditional clubs.
“It was a disappointing season for North Adelaide, West Adelaide, Woodville-West Torrens and Central District,’’ Laird said.
“There will be great interest from a league point of view what concessions those clubs will be granted next year. Because it appears you just have to squeal and jump up and down, which is what Port and the Crows did last year, to be granted certain concessions.
“As we all know, there will be no such concessions for the SANFL’s traditional clubs, which will be another example we are prepared to bend over and appease their demands.”
The Crows and Power were hit by injuries last season, impacting on their reserves teams and they finished bottom and second bottom respectively.
The two clubs met with the SANFL and were granted a marquee player, plus were allowed to offer $20,000 in base payments with a cap of $4000 to attract high quality top up players.
Laird argues the bottom tiered players at SANFL clubs receive no base payments, just match fees, so why should their equivalent in the AFL reserves teams be offered the bonus money.
“Clearly players will jump to those clubs if they are in a position to offer more money,” Laird said. “It is a ridiculous situation.
“We spoke with potential recruits and they knocked us back on the line they were staying in the country to play football, then within weeks they signed with Adelaide or Port Adelaide on the basis of limited training expectations and what we assume more money with the base payments.
“Those clubs now also have the benefit of a mid-season draft and the potential to strengthen their sides with the best players from the traditional clubs. Why give them those other concessions as well?
“It would be extremely frustrating for South Adelaide, who just missed the finals, after losing players under the new AFL draft rules. Its whole livelihood depends on satisfying members, supporters and sponsors.”
Laird said the AFL clubs will argue they have yet to win the SANFL flag, but he noted Port had contested three grand finals, losing two by less than a goal, since becoming the Power reserves in 2014, while the Crows contested the preliminary final this year.
“The majority of SANFL clubs need the AFL reserves sides to have injuries to be competitive,” Laird said. “So why does the SANFL give them more concessions?”
SANFL general manager football Adam Kelly defended the changes to the regulations at the end of the 2018 season, claiming the introduction of a $20,000 player payment cap, in addition to a match payment limits of $400, was to underpin the attractiveness, relevance and quality of the league by ensuring “state league quality players were participating for the AFC and PAFC”.
“In many cases, the supplementary list players are aspirational and seeking further development, but were either lacking opportunity at SANFL league level or had not been part of the SANFL competition,” Kelly said.
“Ultimately, this has increased the pool of SANFL league quality players, with players such as Tom Hutchesson and Hamish Latchford, benefiting from the opportunity at AFC and PAFC and the resources they have provided for their development.”
Kelly noted the winning percentage of the AFL clubs in the six years they have been in the competition was 50 per cent.
An obligation of the licence agreement, entered into in 2013 and concluding at the end of the 2028 season, for the AFC and PAFC to compete in the league is to have an annual review of the terms and conditions of the licence, as well as the regulations pertaining to the AFL club teams.
The impact of last year’s changes is being assessed in a review of the 2019 season.

The next three weeks present us with our best opportunity for a win... if we can get enough fit players onto the park; Glenelg at home, Sturt away and West at home. Hoping, but not expecting, for at least one win.... it may be a zero win season if we don't capture one of these.
On a good news front, we have a new assistant coach joining us. Jeff's former assistant at Werribee is now living in Adelaide so is likely to join him in the box from next week.

Re: R6 Centrals v Norwood Saturday 3.05 PM

I'll give you an idea as to why.
I was talking to one of the Norwood players back in the club after the match (BTW, thank you Norwood for ALL of your players coming back for presentations), he is/was a Central supporter, dad played for us, his reason for not wanting to play for us?
"Can't be stuffed travelling all that way for training & playing",
and that's a HUGE problem we now have, I know it never used to be a problem in the early 2000's, but kids have changed, times have changed.
And, apart from the brief successful period we had, it was a problem before that for years as well.
We need to dangle a much larger carrot but we need money & resources to do that.
The changing of the guard at the end of this season might be a step in the right direction, who knows & only time will tell.

Id be going and having a chat with South, they have faced the same issue but have taken a long term approach to turn their club and zone around, they now attract players and their junior program is the best going around, they have engaged heavily with their local clubs/leagues. A lot of this stuff didn't cost $'s or extra resources, it was just some very smart planning and strategy. Obviously they haven't achieved the ultimate success yet but you get the feeling they aren't far away.

Or go and get Tony Bamford
But he didnt play for centrals so they wont want him or send him packing after a year because he wanted to change things.

A shame there is no father son rule Marty Slades son has made the state under 17 side, plays for Sturt.
Think there is a father son rule if the family wants it.
Fielkes son played juniors at West Adelaide despite living at gawler
Stu Cochrane son is at centrals but doesn't live in zone
I think slade was probably fine to let his kid play at sturt, also with Michael wakelins kid. Think slade in particular has forgotten his roots.

Re: R13 Central v Port Saturday 2.10

Name the players that wouldn't get a game elsewhere?

I'm sure west would take them
Apart from West I don't think any of these players get games at sturt north eagles Glenelg Norwood or south
Marsh
Haydon
Grant
Lleyellwen
Weaver
Dahms
Pisani
Morton
Olsson
Gillard

Beef, I am stunned by some of those names.
Harry Grant has been our best player in a number of games this season; Dylan Morton has been very reliable down back all season; Dylan Weaver has been a consistently good member of our backline; Coooper Dahms is an extremely talented young player; Nick Gillard was best on ground only a couple of weeks ago; Ryan Llellewyn has been important since coming back from a really bad injury. The only one on that list whom I think may struggle is Johnathon Marsh but there are far worse players in the league than him.
Cheers
Some have been good for centrals in game but doesn't mean they are good enough to get games in better teams. Just my opinion and some have improved but still not good enough for other teams. Not a dig at the players and they are getting the most out of their ability but just not good enough.
