Re: LATE MAL

LATE MAL 11
12/1/2019
Saturday night
GDP
Race 8-4
CULTURE KING

Only 6 runners in the field
Nothing in the field with exceptional gate speed
I expect owner driver Paul Cavallaro to lead on this wonderful three year old
No other driver should contemplate holding the lead or vy for the lead against Culture King
The rest of the drivers should aspire to run second somehow
If Culture King did lob in the death it should still be winning
It has won races in the death seat in 3 of its last 4 wins

The rest of the field is even
I think superstar driver Danni Hill on 1 ZAHAROVA could be placed in this
Danni should be having ZAHAROVRA relaxing on the fence , and having a show of being placed

CULTURE KING should be winning the $1742 prizemoney fro running first
I dont know Paul Cavallaro personally, but he should get a hold of $1742 of his own cash and putting it on CULTURE KING
He should put the bet on the Victab , and get at least $1-04 , and steal an extra $69-28 for himself

CULTURE KING is a pacer I expect to go through the grades and make it to fast class

Re: Park Cricket Sledges

Involved me
Playing against a mob called Port Districts last century
They made a million batting first and had us plenty out for f..k all in our reply
I batted on on and on and kept them out in the field the entire 2nd days play
On reaching 60 runs not out the keeper clapped me, and a couple of other lads applauded me
The applause continued for about half a minute
Then the keeper yells out real loud at me
" Well done mate your in credit." followed by laughter from a few of his team mates

I realised what the f..k they were on about then
The previous week I had the following bowling figures
3 overs 0/59 ...

Re: Park Cricket Sledges

I wore a helmet once and once only, too uncomfortable
It was last century when virtually no one was wearing them in the grass roots comps
Understandably , I copped a few niggles by the opposition on the field
During the tea break , one of those opposition players sledged a derogative at me for wearing the helmet
He ends up asking
" So why did you wear the helmet , are you afraid of getting hit in the head ?"
I replied
" I have to wear a helmet for protection mate, protection from your fielders returns."

Re: WEIGHT LOSS + the challenge

Ive re-read this thread almost in its entirety
Personally , my progress is uninspiring

Ive certainly had my ups and downs over the years
109 is what I started on 12/10/2006 at the thread start
I pledged to be below 100 by christmas that year and did
99.2 was my weight that christmas eve , but then ....

99.2 is my lowest weight in this thread 24/12/2006
121.5 my highest 1/3/2011
115.5 was my last posted weight 14/8/2014

I then got even bigger
125.9 November 2016 is what I peaked at

In all seriousness age caught up with me, as I gained weight my health became the victim
I had a multitude of health problems , it was time to change things
I was sick and tired of being sick and tired

113.0 is what I weighed on 1/1/2019
An almost 13 kilo loss in 25 months
That was a good result

Ive made a concerted effort in 2019 so far
107.5 is the weight today

Ive now lost 18.4 kilos in 27 months

Ive always been able to lose weight in the past, but have been terrible in maintaining weight
My proud achievement since the 125.9 peak , is Ive lost the weight and kept it off

The plan now is to lose a sMALl amount of about 1 kilo a month for the rest of the year
The aim is to be below 100 and lower the bat before NYE 2019

In all seriousness , my aim since the 125.9 peak was to lose 37.1kilos
Therefore my goal weight will be atey ate point ate kilos

Re: Australian Domestic Season 2018-19

Another good contribution by Travis Head
Has had a very consistent season with the bat, in the longer forms of cricket
Has come into bat during batting collapses on numerous occasions this season
Innings so far this season in Australia include :

Test matches
72 14
58 19
20 34
20
84
161 59*
60-11 average

South Australia
16
6 87
11 49
50 50
29 72*[this match so far]
46.25 average

19 digs
Only once out for less than double figures, but only once made a ton

Monday June 24th might be a good date for a Globe Derby Park resumption ....

Would have been a good date to re-start GDP racing 24/6/2019
June 24th is a significant date in South Australian trotting history
50 years ago on 24/6/1969 was the first meeting at GDP
Great work by the harness club back then landing on a Bolivar race track some 22 days before the Americans landed on the moon

In commemoration of the 50 years at GDP, there is a special meeting on Saturday 29/6/2019 at GDP
There will be a race in honor called the Anniversary Cup

The first winner at GDP in 1969 was a trotter called Beau Power in race 1
The first Inter Dominion winner was in 1976, a local win to the Len Lewis trained Carclew
I backed Carclew, a favorite horse of mine at 50/1 that night
The runner up , Pure Steel was a certainty beaten , and went on to become one of the strongest and greatest pacers of all time

Re: Coronavirus (Covid19)

This is what concerned me and why I posted a lot - to try to get people to realise how serious the school situation was. Most shedders are asymptomatic; most young people are asymptomatic. Covid-19 in asymptomatic people is very scary, like a stealth bomber going undetected until it strikes someone who it can do some nasty work on. A lot of teachers in schools are over 50 and with various risk factors (e.g. diabetic, high blood pressure)
I better go, reached my daily limit of posts imposed by Mein Fuhrer Bum Crack ;)

Mate its not just schools that have risks, for some teachers they are only exposed to 30 kids for the day, some other workers are exposed to hundreds every day, think about Centrelink workers currently for example.

I appreciate everything Teachers do for our kids, they are really committed to their jobs, but gee don't we hear about it when things don't got their way.

Couldnt agree more! Think of Woolies, Foodland staff etc. At least teachers have somewhat control over the people within their space.

Sorry, just had to make one more comment on this (and it is after midnight, so Mein Fuhrer should allow me).

If you think it is just for teachers that we are doing this, think again please!

A number of experts in the field, learning that I was a teacher who had to be tested for this virus (Mr Bill Bowtell, Dr David Caldicott, Dr David Allen, Dr Alan Baxter) asked me on Twitter to get this message out to people before it was too late. Thankfully, Dr Norman Swan has also joined in this, calling for us to absolutely smash Covid-19, not just mitigate it. It is the information from these esteemed experts in the field that I am sharing. I am just a standard teacher, they are the experts. The points I am making come from them, not so much from me.

WHO studies in Vu, Massachusetts, Iceland and Wuhan have all proven that most transference is from asymptomatic individuals. Most young people who contract Covid-19 are asymptomatic. The age range that most school parents fall into (20-39) is overrepresented in the statistics. You would expect it to be much lower than for older people; it is at the same level for the 60's age group and above those for 70's and 80's.

Is there a possible connection between school parents being hit hard by Covid-19 and it being passed on asymptomatically in schools? The jury is still out on that one. We can only know if we start testing asymptomatic schoolchildren - which it doesn't look as if it is going to happen for a long, long time. However, are we prepared to take the risk that it isn't being transferred, or do we value human life?

Asymptomatic shedding is the worst kind of shedding as it is like a stealth bomber. If it is in schools, it can be moving from one child, to another child, to another child, then to an adult, another adult etc. without maybe being detected until it hits someone really hard. If this is possibly happening, shouldn't we err on the side of caution??

Who are people like us concerned for? Well, for one; any bus driver transporting the students, assistants at shops whom the young people may visit to buy a drink from on the way home, cleaners (after medical staff, trust us, these guys are the real heros - very much on the front line of dealing with the virus!), medical staff who may need to deal with cases arising from these transferences, parents, children (always the number one concern of teachers).. and YOU, the general community.

Additionally, closing down schools will be the one real way of sending a message to young people that they will actually listen to. At the moment, as their life is less altered than the rest of society, they still seem to have a feeling of 'immunity', that it can't happen to them, that their life can be continued pretty much as is.

I teach at a school that is regarded (rightly or wrongly) as a fairly academic school. You would think that Year 12s at this school would be bright enough to follow social distancing rules, wouldn't you? Well, at least we would hope so. Unfortunately, it is not so easy for young adults to always remember to social-distance. Just about every classroom I go into, there will be students friendly gangtackling one another or similar. This is a mentality that is very difficult to stop - think back to when you were in the 14- to-18 age group. If it is hard for this age group, I am sure it is even harder for the younger ones. Social distancing in schools is incredibly hard to implement and enforce - it is a losing battle!

Many young people think they are invincible and call this virus the 'exit boomer virus'. In fact, some people on here seem to be reinforcing that opinion, and also a lot on the media. Well, not only can it be passed on from children to adults, but it can also have a severe impact on children.

They are now in ICUs on ventilators gasping for breath, in fact some are even dying!! Until we can get young people to realise they are not invincible, their actions won't change.

I just wish you could see this, I know that a number of you can... but those of you who said that the campaign for closing schools was just about 'precious teachers' PLEASE think again, please! This is for YOUR life as much as it is for any teacher. We really need to absolutely SMASH this virus immediately. It can be done with a total lockdown for a period of 8 to 12 weeks, with then domestic activities opened up again, but not allowing any international movements until a vaccine is found. However, rather than the 6 to 12 month partial closures that those calling for mitigation seek, a TOTAL lockdown only needs to be for that 8 to 12 week period.

Anyway, I hope I got through to some of you. If I didn't and I see some more 'teacher bashing' comments on here tomorrow, you will have succeeded and will not be hearing from me again on this topic. I promised that the other night, but it was too important an issue to leave. If I can't get through now, then I never will!

Sorry about the incredibly long rant, but if ever an issue was important enough to warrant one, it is this one!

Cheers and good health to each and every one of you.

Excellent post from a teachers perspective

1960 GRAND FINAL

NW...4-2...7-5...10-12...13-12[90]
NA ...5-5...8-6...11-10...14-11[95]

2018 GRAND FINAL

NW...3-7...7-11...12-14...15-15[105]
NA ...5-0...9-4.....14-7.....19-10[124]

The last 2 times NA have beaten NW in Grand Finals
NA won the 1960 grand final by 5 points
NA led the 2018 Grand Final by 5 points at 1/4 + 1/2 + 3/4 time in 2018
Thus NA leading by 5 points in 4 consecutive quarters in winning finals against NW

1966 GRAND FINAL
PA V ST

PA...3-2...5-2.,..7-7.....8-8
ST...3-2...7-7...9-12..16-16

This is what led up to that Grand Final in previous seasons

1963
ST...2-2...5-7...7-8...11-12
PA...2-1...4-4...8-6...11-9

PA... 4-3..5-8...7-10...11-15
ST...2-0...2-0....3-4......5-6

PA...6-2...8-2...12-2...14-6
ST...1-2....4-6....7-7.....9-11

1964
ST...4-1...7-3...7-4......11-8
PA...3-5..6-9..13-10..16-11

PA ...6-4...8-7...13-10...15-13
ST...1-1....2-4.....4-6.......8-9

1965
ST ...4-1...4-2.....11-5....14-5
PA...5-8...8-12..11-13..13-14

PA ...3-3...6-7...7-10...10-13
ST....1-4...3-5....5-8......9-12

GF
PA ...3-3...6-3...11-7...12-8
ST....2-1...6-2.....7-2....12.5

1966
PA...4-7...6-10...7-13...12-15
ST...2-1...4-14...6-15....11-17

ST...2-1....5-4.....6-4....9-13
PA....6-2...9-4...12-7...13-8

PA...3-1....7-1...7-2....11-4
ST...4-4.....4-7..6-15...9-18

2ND SEMI
ST...1-3...7-5...11-8...13-9
PA...1-3....4-6..10-6...13-10

From 1963 -1966 PA had won 9 matches in a row against ST
It has been said to me by more than one historian that ST had the belief that they could win Grand Finals after the barnstorming finish in the 1965 close loss
The opinions vindicated by the fact that ST indeed went on to win the 1966 GF V PA by a massive 56 points
I have to value those opinions as some of the historians watched that era of football, I didnt

Without being there , I can only offer statistical facts
Was there also a defining match the PA V ST Match round 13 , 1966, Alberton Oval ?
ST won that game 9-18 to 11-4 and broke that sequence of 9 PA wins in succession

This from a prominent SANFL historian of the times, told to me very recently- something like this :
" I was at the game , Keith Chessell took a chest mark , about 40-45m out, near the Norman Williams scoreboard.
Doc kicked a screw punt, it wobbled and went through for a goal and ST won after the siren."

The next time the two great clubs met was the Second Semi
PA won again by 1 point, with PA winning the last qtr
Then they met in the 1966 Grand Final

Of interest is just how often ST outscored PA in the last quarters during the PA 9 match winning sequence
LAST QUARTERS
ST won 6
2 were equal
PA won 1
The PA win was the first of the 9 wins, in the next 8 wins PA never outscored ST in last quarters
Please note I have not allowed for any wind advantage

The other stat was in the Keith Chessell after siren win
ST won but PA outscored the blues but this time PA won the last qtr !

So I can only deduce one thing from those stats and paint a picture, without knowing the artist
PA started well in the 9 wins as they were a hard at it team, and could pressure ST , and set up leads ?
ST would finish better, perhaps as the games wore on because of their exceptional skill level ?

Whatever the reasons
The Alberton win after the siren may be inconclusive as a turning point, as PA won the Second Semi Final
I tend to agree with the experts, the 1965 ST GF effort was most significant turning point.
Thats because the next time the teams met in a GF ST won the match

Re: Jack Oatey Medallists

Did PA attempt a more defensive game plan in 1968 in the minor round ?
1965 17-3....1756...1357
1966 14-6...1813....1267
1967 14-6...1769....1324
1968 15-5...1401....1013

PA finished the minor round in 2nd spot with 1401 points for
NW finished wooden spooners with 1515 points for
Only CD 1410[8th] and WDV 1202[9th] finished with less points for

PA must have defended stoutly conceding only 1013 points at an average of 50.65 per match
The highest score in the minor round against them was WA scoring a' whopping' 13-10[88]

Sturt scored 15-15 against PA in the second semi, which ends up being the highest score against PA for the season

1968 GRAND FINAL
ST 3-3...5-11...10.-13...12-18
PA 3-4...4-4.......6-6.........9-9

The memory I have of this GF was of Peter Endersbee
He used the uncommon kick for the times the check side kick
He scored 2 check side goals at the scoreboard end, and good on him for taking a punt

The irony of this match is the teenage Peter Endersbee scored 4-3 a total of 27 points
ST defeated PA by exactly 27 points, you could say Peter was the difference between the 2 sides ....

Paul Mr Magic Bagshaw deserved to be acknowledged as B.O.G in this match

The drawn first semi final 1969
WA 2-3...4-9...7-14...10-16
WT 5-2 ...8-3...10-6...11-10

The replay
WA 3-2...5-3...10-7...13-11
WT 5-2...6-4...7-7.....10-8

The 1st qtrs in both finals had the almost identical scores

RD10 the following year 1970
WA 5-6...5-7...7-9...10-11
WT 0-2...3-6...10-8.13-10

In this game notice the similarity in the 3/4 and full time scores to the replayed final
Only this time WT won the match

In the 2 WA V WT finals the crowd attendances were interesting
1st final 28,349
2nd final 26315
I would have thought more people would roll up for the replay 13/9/1969
It ends up being one of the most significant days in Australian sporting history
On the day of this final St Kilda junior footballer Shane Keith Warne was born
The biggest selling single of the year was The Real Thing sung by Russell Morris
Not the Russell Morris who played for St Kilda
The producer of The Real Thing is a great supporter of St Kilda , Molly Meldrum

GL V ST matches of 1969

GRAND FINAL
ST 24-15
GL 13-16

Peter Argents JO nominee MAL Greenslade kicked 9-4 almost the difference between the 2 teams
Anyone who kicks that many goals in a GF deserves BOG status
To think MAL Greenslade may not have played at full forward had MAL Emmy Jones not broken his leg in 1968, forcing his retirement

A progression of 1969 was that ST scored more goals every time they played
6-10-18-24 the sequence
ST had scored the highest GF score of all SANFL Grand Finals at that stage

GL 44-69
ST 58-46

GL had 113 scores in the 4 matches ST had 104 in 1969
In every match GL scored more points than goals

Re: 1964 - 1990

BIG 4
Im after some clarification as to what actually constituted the BIG4

The period of time of the BIG4 was first mooted was about mid 70s , but Im not sure when it lost status
My underStanding was it was 'coined' because GL/NW/PA/ST were doing well financially and thus performing as well

Mr West Adelaide, the great man Doug Thomas, often referred to Westies premiership side as being the only side outside of the BIG5 to win a flag since SA in 1964
I have a vivid recollection that Doug had mentioned a BIG5 rather than a BIG4 on TV in the 1980s
I was a massive massive Doug Thomas fan , anything the man dubbed The Mouth said I would listen to intently

So in essence what Doug Thomas meant by a BIG5 is that NA should be the other team in a BIG5
Dougs perception was probably for on field success rather than finances , if that makes 'cents'

So what exactly was the BIG4 ?

Booney
Circa 1970
No colour TV , so to impress you TVs were 'black and white'!
Good try , but I didnt get the trifecta , there were no TAB trifectas in the 1970 , but I did take quinellas back then
The most pleasing thing about rd 1 in 1970 was that my mob beat your mob by 26 points

Re: 1964 - 1990

Peter Marker saw Barrie Robrans debut game in 1967
I saw Phil Carmans fabulous debut for NW in 1970
I quickly noticed a NW player playing a superb game , it was number 9
I looked in my budget there was no number 9 listed, so he was a late inclusion
I was sitting in the members grandstand , wing area
I asked a couple of others who number 9 was, no one knew ....number 9 number 9 number 9 ....
I had watched this mystery player who had a splendid game , and also watched NW beat PA by a comfortable 26 points
I found out after the match concluded that it was Phil Carman
A special mention to Bill Hager for making it possible for Phil Carman to play at Norwood

I would say between 1970 + 2020 of all the NW players Ive seen , playing at a perceived 'peak' , Phil Carman was the best
Gary McIntosh is consistently the best player Ive seen at the club

Ali was the champ :prayer: :prayer: :prayer:
Liston the ex champ was the challenger
Jersey Joe Walcott was the champ in the 1950s for a while, was the referee in this fight ;)

Re: 1964 - 1990

Of all the Grand Finals that Glenelg played they should have won more with the talent they had.

1975- This is one and 77 & 90 they should have one. Best SANFL side ever to hit the ground stats wise . Nothing went right Grand Final Day

75' must have been an interesting year ... Before my time but I believe Norwood only lost around 2 games for the year but were fairly decent underdogs for the GF'? (Not trying to be a smartass FE, but) would there be many other seasons where a side with such a W/L record was considered a reasonable underdog in the GF?

Heres one for you JK
Under 19 Grand Final 1990
PA V NW
PA had lost 1 match for the season and had a drawn game as well
NW had to win the Premiership from the Elimination final
Judging by the minor round finish PA would prob have been a red hot fav to win this match ?

PA 4-0....7-1....8-6...11-10
NW 1-2...5-8...9-12..15-16

NW
Prouse, King, Thompson, Bowman, Patterson, Dobie
4 Laing
3 Dobie
3 Patterson

PA
Berry , Warton, Buckley,Nield, Bond, Stringer, Miller
3 Buckley
2 Bond

Heres a report from this GF
Damien Prouse at CHB for the redlegs was in total control of the U19 GF. The further the game went the more he became impassable.
Michael King showed why he won the Tomkins Medal. His pace and movement were superior to all around him. His pace highlighted a fact that became obvious very early in the game- NW was much quicker than PA
Early Ports Brett Chalmers with strong marking and accurate kicking and with support from the slick and elusive McCullum medalist Troy Bond put on 7 straight goals.
At the other end the redlegs struggled. They had plenty of the ball but their finishing off was poor. PA defenders Karl Crombie and Bradley Rainsford put up strong opposition. Tim Marbey and Michael Warton worked hard but even at half time and leading by 5 points they looked in trouble.
Michael Thompson and Lahlan Bowman rucked well while Stephen Patterson roved excitingly. All though Michael Wakelin caused the redlegs some concern in the last quarter, the final siren saw the red and blues win the cup
Both coaches have seen plenty of grand finals and have had long and distinguished coaching careers with their respective clubs.
MALcolm Maiden[PA] and Frank Leonard [NW] should be highly commended for the way their teams played the game
Norwoods performance was even more meritorious considering it was in 6th place after round 11. While most teams were getting players back they kept losing players like Damien Mellow, Johnathon Ross and Michael Oleary

Frank Leonard, Norwoods coach, played football at WA
Does anyone know anything of Ports coach MALcolm Maiden ?

Some BIG names played in that game including current Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley
Stephen Patterson played for Collingwood as well in the AFL , became a Mayor of the Holdfast Council , and now is the Liberal Member for the State seat of Morphett
Brett Chalmers is the father of Gold Medalist Kyle Chalmers

Re: 1921 - 1963

CHRIS DIDDY MUNRO
1928-1930 WA
1932-1936 SA
He only played 78 games in 8 seasons , but he had left a lasting impression
He scored 393 goals at an average of 5.04 per game in his brief but brilliantly performed career
He started off playing for WA where he scored 13 goals in 9 games
He excelled at SA where he added 380 goals in 69 matches
Diddy made the SA team of the century at full forward

Diddy averaged a sensational 5-5 goals per game for SA
Im wondering why he only played 78 games out of a possible 136 Minor round games + finals

1935 SA Premiership
1964 SA premiership , there was an omen for this premiership
In mid 1964 Manfred Mann recorded a smash hit
That hit was called do wah DIDDY DIDDY ...

KEN FARMER
A person told me this about Ken Farmer today
He was a carer for a mature aged man a while ago , and asked me to post this on his behalf
The man, by then a dementia sufferer , would ask him on many occasions
" How many goals did Ken Farmer kick today, did he kick any over his head ?"

Re: 1964 - 1990

Phil Carman when he played well is perhaps the best footballer Ive seen for Norwood
Because of his immense talent it was most probably inevitable that Phil Carman would eventually play in the VFL
I have not heard or read he left because of a Oatey loyalty or a Hammond thing
Phil Carman did have a season under Bob Hammond , he probably could have left Norwood in 1973 , but stayed to play in 1974
Phil Carman played his last game for Norwood in the first semi final against GL
GL 12-18
NW 10-7
If memory serves me correct Phil Carman played below his best and was well held by GL defender Greg Croser a good looking footballer on and off the field
My thoughts were had Phil Carman played one of his brilliant games NW may have won the game
He ended up at CO the following year , one can draw conclusions as to whether the team loss was a catalyst to leave NW
In recent times I have spoken to a ST club stalwart from the Jack Oatey days
He has told a group of us that he considered Phil Carman as good a coach as Jack Oatey
He based his opinion on what Phil Carman had to endure at the start of his coaching career with a ST
He stated that Phil turned the club around from a struggling club to very very competitive club

When Robert Oatey was replaced by Bob Hammond, there was a definite angst at his appointment
Bob Hammond had a difficult task of blending in and also grooming a team for the reasonable successes the club had under Robert Oatey
Robert Oatey created a team , he may have even won Premierships, in my opinion
To Bob Hammonds credit, the wheels could have fallen off in his early tenure , but he took the club to successes in 1975 +1978
I was a Robert Oatey fan, he was the coach when I first barracked for the leggies
I was disappointed that he was replaced , but I had nothing against Bob Hammonds appointment
In 1974 when Bob Hammond was appointed I was still enraptured by his performance for NA in the 1973 Grand Final loss to Glenelg
Norwood had a new coach, and in my eyes a very very good defender as a player

Theres the yarn about when Bob Hammond talked to the Norwood masses for the first time
He was greeted with contempt by some
He made an initial remark " Members of the North Adelaide Football Club ..."
This brought a positive reaction
I have wondered whether Bob Hammond pre-mediated the North Adelaide jibe

When I think of Phil and the 2 Bobs !
I think of 3 magnificent footballers and 3 very good coaches in their diverse ways

Eclectic Racing Names

Been some interesting names of races/trots/dogs runners
My favorite all time name was a SA galloper in the latter part of last century
Its name
Esra Star

It had several runs until the penny dropped
An applicable form comment for this runner should have been ' well BACKed'
Yes indeed when you read this horses name BACKwards, you will realise why it was banned from using this name !
