Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Poor crowds now because of ???

NORWOOD
This is the way I see it
My team won the last 2 SANFL flags
But finally losing players to the AFL teams has taken its toll
Then Norwood lost its super performing coach
Norwood is more or less a skeleton remnant of the Bassett days

B GRADE INVADERS
Now we have an AFL invader in the comp destroying the opposition
Between the 2 AFL B grade invaders , they have taken a lot of talent from every other SANFL club
So no other A Grade SANFL club has AFL players dropping back
This means the talent of the 8 SANFL A grade teams is arguably at its lowest off all time this season

PRODUCT
Now I'm asked to fork out $14 to watch these games
Nah, no value for the dollar anymore, not for an eroded product
I have my Norwood seasons pass , so will venture to some of my clubs games
I also used to watch about 10-20 neutral games per season
But I will very rarely ever go to these games now

STANDARD
In essence the AFL has eroded the SANFL
The SANFL is more or less a feeder comp for the AFL
there are no long term champs and superstars in the comp
The SANFL was once a step away form the AFL in the 1980's
Now it is a step ahead of Amateur League

PAST
I am glad to have followed this comp since the late 60s
I've had great entertainment
I enjoyed being a passionate supporter

NOW
I watch and follow the SANFL
But the passion and the parochialness is abated

Poor crowds ???
Well its now minus one more often because of me

Re: RIP Gary Gilmour

Gary 'Gus' Gilmour
Born 26/6/1951
Left handed allrounder
This was perhaps his greatest day in the first limited overs World Cup series

England v Australia
1975
60 over games

EG 93
Denness 27
Gus 6/14[12]

It was perhaps the best bowling I've seen in limited overs games
Gus took the first 6 wickets to fall , he had the Poms bamboozled , swinging the ball prodigiously
He opened the bowling with a guy called Lillie 1/26 [9]
Poms were 8/52 before recovering to 93

Gus had won the game for Australia
Or so I thought watching this game 39 years ago
7 Alan Turner
15 Rick Mckosker
2 Ian Chappell
4 Greg Chappell
0 Ross Edwards
5 Rodney Marsh

Australia 0/17 slumped to 6/39
Douggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggie Walters was still there
Joining him was Gary Gus Gilmour
The New South Welshmen put on an unbroken 55 and to a victory
Gus threw the bat and made a run a ball 28 , the only batter in this match to strike at more than 70
6/94 Australia
Douggggggie 20*
Gus 28*

Needless to say Gus was man of the match , and his best bowling and batting stats in ODI
Australia made the final losing to the West Indies
Exciting times watching one day cricket
It was scorned by many of the day, a bit like the 20/20 of today

Gus Test career
Made a test ton and took 3 hauls of 5 wickets
The guy could seriously play
Never looked fit enough to play cricket
Did suffer a lot from Gout , being around Walters and co prob didnt help his condition

Gus Gilmour

Re: Taity's back!!!!

The way I see it

Shaun Tait has been given this amazing gift to bowl fast
At times lethal
But he has been given a fragile body

His fragile body is probably why he just concentrates on the shorter version of the game in recent times

Now he is trying to make a comeback of sorts to the longer versions of the game
That would seem to suggest he most probably wanted to play all forms of cricket for most of his career

I wish him the best of luck
Hope he succeeds in all versions of cricket this coming season

Re: How to Gamble/How not to Gamble

RECORDS
Not the ones that play music
The ones EVERY PUNTER should keep
Keep them for a minimum of 12 months
Then evaluate
Have a look where you win and lose
I can't emphasis how important this is
I've recorded bets starting way back in the 20th century

If your losing heavily , it might just be the wake up call you need
Some punters would not have the foggiest just how much they win or lose
They might be hundreds/ thousands lost in short term periods without realising it

Punting is like a sMALl business
Business operators need to keep records of what stock makes $$$ and what stock is a liability
Punters need to as well

Re: Round 13 - Eagles v Norwood @ MThiem Hyundai Oval (Sat 1

One team benefited greatly with the umpiring
One team had the only use of a breeze in the match
One team scored all the goals after half time
That team won the game

Given that most of the appalling decisions against Norwood were in the First half
Given that both sides had no wind advantage factor after half time
Given that the umpiring was baffling for both sides in the 2nd half
Given that Norwood ends up 24 points up at half time
I still have to give full credit to Woodville West Torrens for a great 2nd half , and victory

Port Adelaide 1870-2013
What a club
Just a few memories of this once magnificent SANFL entity

Sitting next to Ports 1954 Best and Fairest winners daughter and friend at school
Sitting next to Ports 1920 Mag Medal winner's grandson at friend at school
Having PA footballers at my 21st birthday

I don't barrack for PA
But PA is part of my life
That's why I'm so against whats happening to the club these days

The SANFL without a TRUE Port Adelaide representation, is truly poorer

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Witnessed a comical at Alberton today
A young boy cheered for Port Reserves today
On a couple of occasions he yelled out go Port Port Power
On another occasion he yelled out bury em Port Power
This is how a conversation took place between the boy and another mature aged female Port supporter[not exact but should be close enough to the facts]

" Bury em Port Power"
" Its not Port Power its Port Adelaide"
" No its Port Powers second team"
" No its Port Adelaide."
There was a bit more added about Port is or Port is not
Then the lady says
" Get stuffed" To the young boy

The adult with the boy exploded
" Hey , barrack for your team lady, but don't swear at the boy he is only 15."
She must have told the man to get stuffed as well , so the guy told her to shut up, support her team and not abuse the young boy any more
" This is a family area stupid, don't abuse the kid."

The man gave it to the Port lady
Wow!

Both the kid and lady barracking for the same team and they argued !
And to top it all off the lady was wearing her Port Power clothes and scarf !

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

No surprises here and no blame on Hocking, his team is just in the wrong place.

Garry Hocking says:

'developing Power players remains his priority'

'winning a (SANFL) premiership will play second fiddle to the main focus of developing AFL players'

'the main thing is to try to get everybody playing really well for the AFL team because they are heading into a finals campaign ... for us that's the main point. Everything else rolls back'

'the main priority is to make sure we win an AFL premiership'

'the key thing is the AFL team ... that's what we have to get right. Then we plot and plan and see what happens (in the SANFL)'

These are fairly typical quotations of a reserves team coach.
The 8 remaining traditional SANFL clubs also have reserves teams, known as the seconds.
One of the main jobs of a seconds coach is to prepare players for the League teams.
Port Reserves are no different.
The great pity is that this is happening in a A grade League by a team belonging in another A grade league.

This attitude is degrading the SANFL competition.
They should be in the comp with the purpose of winning flags.
That was the attitude of the Port Adelaide I knew 1870-2013.

This Dedja post sums up my angst , and represents the views of some others on this site.
That being, they don't belong, and they are degrading the competition.

Please please please can we have a Port Adelaide team in the SANFL not affiliated with the AFL Port Power team.
This comp is not the same without them.

Oh well, of course....one oval with grass on it varies remarkably from the next.
You know it does. You are on thin ice with this argument mate

Ask Westies this year

On thin ice, WTF does that mean?

I think there are very few differences between ovals and using it as a reason for losing is bollocks.

Spot on Booney
Take Adelaide Crows Reserves as an example
They have won 7 more away games than home games in this SANFL season

not really sure why people feel the need to actively hate opposition.

but anyway, yep, i think we will smash them.

and i think mitch has turned a corner now. since coming back he has been much much more consistent. The big one will be whether harris can stay together.

i really hope phil hughes gets a run eventually, though it may not be until rogers retires.

I'm not a fan of bagging individual sportsmen or teams
However , the Indians have been an annoying team in recent years
They seem to complain about too many issues , take matters into their own hands too often
They seemingly challenge rules and incidents more than most other sides , and sometimes get there own way when other teams don't.

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

I owe the good people of Port Adelaide a sincere apology.

On Friday, I had a meeting on St Vincent Street and parked my car in a side street for about 2 hours.

To my pleasant surprise, my car was still there when I returned. I was relieved when I found out that I still had all my wheels. I was ecstatic when I found out I wasn't keyed.

I did notice a lot of action outside of the police station but it must have been an unusually busy day,

Despite the fact the streets were deserted and most of the buildings were empty it was a pleasant morning.

Thank you, the good people of Port Adelaide, you are truly misunderstood.

There was a Melbourne footballer who sailed over in 1877 to play for Port Adelaide
He arrived by ship at the Port
He asked how to get to the Port Adelaide Football Club
He was told he needed a horse as it was too far to walk
He was directed to a blacksmith
This is how things happened
" I need a horse"
" Have no horses left, only got a camel."
" Whats a camel ?"
" Its like a horse."
And the blacksmith sold a camel to the prospective Port Adelaide Footballer
He rode his camel towards the Port Adelaide Football Club
On the way he stopped at a hotel for a drink
" Sarsaparilla thanks"
A local wharfie had this to say
" Only women drink Sarsaparilla."
" F..k off a...hole I'm a Victorian , Victorians can drink what they want."
The two had an ensuing scuffle
Both men were apprehended by the police
This is how the interview went at the police station that Dedja mentioned in his post
" Whats your name?"
" Gary Butcher."
" Address"
" No address I'm from Melbourne, and I'm proud of being a Victorian"
" Why are you riding a camel stupid?"
" No horses."
" Is the camel a MALe or feMALe ?."
" Errrr its its errrrrrr , its a feMALe, yes its a feMALe for sure."
" How do you know its a feMALe?"
" Its is, I know it is, when I first rode away from the Port, men were saying look at the c..t on the camel."

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

To the 6 clubs that voted YES.

From here on, this will probably happen to each and every YES voter :
You entice a youngster to try out at the club.
You nuture the lad, teach him the skills of the game , develop him into a very good footballer.
He stars, or shows ability.
Inevitability takes his course.
The lad gets drafted.

This has been happening for a while now , he ends up at an AFL club
Its par for course , most players strive to play in the big league

That lad might be drafted to play for any of the 18 clubs
The lad might even get drafted to play with the Adelaide Crows and Port Power in the AFL

The lad may even get to play for Adelaide Reserves or Port Reserves in the SANFL
That player plays against the 6 clubs that raised him that voted YES

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

The farce continues

Impey and A Young may or may not be available to play in the Norwood v Port Reserves Grand Final this week

As I understand it
If Impey and A Young are not selected in the AFL prelim Final
Then :
If Port Power beat Hawthorn both can play in a SANFL Grand Final
If Port Power loses to Hawthorn both can not play in the SANFL Grand Final

I know there are rules in place but
How the f..k can they prepare themselves this week
Both may not play any football this weekend
And if they both don't play at all this weekend it is a disgrace
As far as Im concerned the players MUST come first in these issues

Power and Reserves are both playing on the same weekend within a day of each other
Common sense decrees that whoever misses out on the AFL list should be allowed to play for the SANFL list
That means that the SANFL team can not be stacked
If it was a weekend apart , I can understand to a degree

Given the circumstances both should be allowed to play no matter what
Its what these guys are geared up for Finals and Grand Finals success

Forget about no AFL in the SANFL
These Port players must be taken care of
The farce continues

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

To have a crack at answering Mal's question:

For me it's a bit of a tricky one, because circumstances have meant that I have had the ability to attend far more games this year than I have been able to in a number of years. So while I certainly have always followed the competition, I have been in a far better position this year to attend games and to follow my SANFL club than I have been in some years. So the question is probably better directed to someone who was equally engaged in both years.

Having said that, I have thoroughly enjoyed the competition this year, as has my partner, and we'll be attending Sunday and regularly next year.

I guess what I have found frustrating on here is, not that people have opinions, even strong opinions about the direction of the competition, but some of the absolute nonsense doom and gloom, conspiracy theories and talking down of the competition, even when the evidence does not support the arguments being put.

Terrific post
Good view point

Yes there are posters who are doomatising the comp
And then there are ones like me who lives in the halycon daze of the SANFL before the AFL interference

there was another one with an outside edge where he didnt get near it, but i think that was off lyon earlier on

the one from maxwell down leg side was impossible, no way was he catching that

Just saw it again
Yes it was a hard catch to take
