Some more Edwards v Maxwell

THE BIG SHOW
[On his 2nd innings dig v Pakistan]
"On a 4th and 5th day wicket you need to put pressure on the bowlers and get rid of those bat pads.
My plan was to try and get rid off those guys as early as possible in my innings and hopefully get into my innings and make it easier to get singles and manipulate the field.
unfortunately it didnt quite come off."

DAVE EDWARDS
[the response]
" No shit it didnt come off.
Jesus , youre employing the " hit them out of the attack" philosophy.
Really.
F..k me youre a basic human being."

Wow Mr Edwards no holding back !
And a final Edward quote

Re: Aus v Ind Test Series

Hughes (fingers and toes crossed) will be the next Australian opener.

Burns is a big shot too, reckon it's between him and Marsh for the number 3 spot.
I know Dean Jones talks a bit of crap but he mentioned only recently that Hughes isnt even in the selectors sights and a couple of selectors had even stamped his papers so to speak. Today casts further doubt on him aswell but hopefully he comes back healthy and just keeps peeling off runs
I think they will go with Marsh this test

S Marsh
M Marsh
Watson

If they are in the same team , Australia could finish the match with 8 fit players !

Re: Aus v Ind Test Series

We gave India the pitch they wanted to play on
Adelaide Oval played like a sub continent pitch in this game
Easy batting for 3 days
Hard yakka for the bowlers
Day 4 the best and both batters and bowlers had a chance
Day 5 it assists spin bowlers

Had Australia batted last India , might have rued by not playing Ashwin

Things that give me the shits
Why the hell do we give the Indians a deck like this ?
When was the last time a sub cont deck assisted Australian teams ?

Australia gives other sub cont nations a sporting chance
There are varying decks for quick bowlers , spinners and batters
There are bouncy decks, there are spinning decks

In the sub cont we dont seem to get the same deal , pitches made for batting or for spin
Its a joke at times seeing spinners get more bounce than the quicks

Its the perogative of sub cont curators to produce their own types of decks , cant really blame them
But what it means is sub cont teams find it tough to win overseas
As much as Australians struggle v spin there , sub cont teams struggle against pace and bounce here

Thats why Australia will be number one more often then India in the world
Australia can win series in places like South Africa and England who are usually top 3 to 5 teams most years
India are very unlikely to

Fully deserved
Remarkable improvement
I never anticipated East Coast Blonde Don Smith would be a regular Test cricketer

However, I have a concern
The timing

EC Smith has just scored 162 + 52 not out in his last test match and right now is at his peak
Is it the right time to burden him with the captaincy ?

Hopefully it does not affect his sensational form of recent times

That great cricketing predictor WHUFC , has been spruiking another
Ryan Carters as the next opener for Australia

Will Chris Rogers or Shane Watson be able to keep Ryan Carters out of the team for much longer ?
Rogers is a fighter, but he is closer to 40 than 21 in age
Watson, with the emerging Marsh as an allrounder , is now under pressure to make runs

From what Ive seen he is rather unspectacular
Just the sort of player needed in the current team to compliment the dashers in the line up

Will he play Test cricket ?

My answer, YES

Re: Aus v Ind Test Series

In fairness to Watson a batting average of 36 and bowling average of 32 probably means his had a reasonable test career

IMHO though he should be batting at 6 or 7 though depending on who the keeper is.

I think his bowling his very underrated

If he can't bowl though he doesn't warrant his spot in the side

He should be fighting for one spot with Mitch Marsh

For me in test cricket

Watson better bowler than Marsh
Marsh better batsmen than Watto

Acceptable career as the allrounder
Plugs a few gaps , paid his way as the allrounder
BUT
He is not the Test cricket match winner that he is in shorter forms of cricket where he is a star

Today was vintage Watto , did the hard work, looked the goods and got out after another Test innings start

He is extremely fortunate that Marsh got injured
It means he will bowl more this series perhaps
He needs a 3-5 wicket haul or a batting score close to 99
Otherwise MT79 and a bevy of safooty Watto critcs will gain in momentum

More unspectacular performances may even get Rod Rooster posting !

This is test cricket

AO take a leaf out of this pitch
You do realise that the same technology and methodolgy is used in developing the AO drop ins as the MCG ones? In other words the MCG and Adelaide oval drop in are basically the same style of pitch.

If its the same style of pitch , please explain why AO + MCG play differently ?
What WHUFC says is that AO is too much in favor of the batsmen for 3 days
From what I am seeing today there's something in it for the bowlers today

Well you Nuffies stick to the t20 rubbish then

Good bowlers have always been able to get wickets on Adelaide oval, however it's not been due to bowling seam up or due to swing a la Brisbane. Adelaide has always been about changes of pace, variations in length and using your bowling brain. If you doubt me read the book Extra Cover by Jack Egan and the quotes attributable to the late Graham Dilley who took more test wickets than any nuffy on here (I include myself in that descriptor too)

The beauty of test cricket is the variances and nuances in the different venues. Yes adelaide has favoured the bat more than the ball but than is a contrast to Brisbane which can be a swing bowlers paradise, Perth traditionally favours pace bowling but can be a road once your in and Sydney favours spin teaditionly.

Yes let's produce the same pitch at every test match venue in Australia!

What are you on about ?
Your attempts to denounce posters by calling them nuffies is disgraceful

I will try and explain this for you one more time
WHUFC [and myself at times] get bored watching many batsmen dominate many bowlers on a norMALly placid AO oval pitch on days 1-2-3
We both have this mindset because we prefer a pitch that provides a more equal contest between bat and ball.
AO days 1-2-3 might bore us at times but does not mean we are not nuffies
If you cannot understand this paragraph , find a 8 year old person , get them to read the paragraph and get them to explain

Re: Aus v Ind Test Series

Hey mal, if only this test was also at the Adelaide oval, maybe there would be a result unlike this road :)

Ive read this BM !

If Australia gets in a position to declare what should Smith do ?
Clarke set a target when the series was 0-0 all in Adelaide , a good gamble
Australia is now 2-0 up
Would Smith set say a target of 360 stumps day 4, or even say 330 into the last day

Logically he should not give the Indians a sniff being 2-0 up

I can understand calling this game off with 3 balls left and 4 wickets to take
Why call it off FFS

If I hear the excuse being that the bowlers were rooted , I will be even more pissed off
if ALL bowlers were rooted get Rogers and Shaun Marsh to bowl 2 overs each
Who cares who bowls out, bowl the 24 balls and TRY AND WIN the match

So who is responsible for calling it off
Smith ?
Lehmann
Anyone else ?

Whoever it is they better have a decent excuse for calling it off

24 Balls left

Why did Australia call off the 4th Test against India ?
India was 6/174 with 24 balls left

24 balls to obtain 4 wickets
Highly improbable but not impossible
The last 5 batters left are arguably the most inferior batters in the Indian line up
Day 5 pitch , although still flatty, did give the bowlers glimmers of assistance at times

Fair bit of fuss around about Test teams bowling a prescribed amount of overs in a day, yet the Aussies knocked off early

Sport to some is played with the mindset of 'never give up'
Why play 5 days and then pack up with about 15 minutes to go , when a win is a possibility?

A days admission into Test cricket is reasonably expensive [In Adelaide this year it was $75 + $100 for some seats per day]
I imagine the costs would be similar in Melbourne
So did the Melbourne 5th day crowd get short changed ?

I think Australia made the wrong call , and should have played this match out
The only time , I feel they should have called it off with 4 wickets left , is perhaps with 3 balls left

Re: What would you do?

Lets get things into perspective
You get $3-85 for a $2-75 favorite going into the last leg
Thats good odds
If you get this opportunity say 50 times , the law of probability says you will make $$$$$$
That 50 times would apply to bets of $1 bets to $100,000 bets
As a one off bet the logic changes though
As a one off you either win or lose
Over a 50 time scenario you would almost certainly win

In this instance I think the bookie is being GENEROUS to the punter
The punter has successfully accrued 5 legs
$25,936.09 is where the punter sits after the first 5 legs have won
$32,922.14 is being offered to the punter to call off the investment
$6986.05 is an amount being offered to the punter to call the bet off

That $6886.05 changes things
Lets put it this way
You go up to a bookie and ask for a bet of $25936.09 at $3-85, the bookie says
" Sir , the odds in the market place is $2-75 , can we give you $6986.07 not to have the bet?"
Now the $3-55 for a $2-75 fav has been negated

Ask yourself this question
If one bookie puts up $3-85 for a $2-75 favorite would you have $25936.09 on it in any case ?
Im tipping any punter who started the bet off with $15 would not have a $25936.09 bet ?

I would take the $32,922.06
