Re: Ashes 3rd Test Perth Discussion

Did a bit of googling, and interestingly it seems that there is NO statistically significant advantage to winning the toss, in fact the team that loses the toss has won more often over the sample period but is within the bounds of error.

So I think I'll change my opinion from above

Note the old data, might try and work it out for newer stuff.

http://home.iprimus.com.au/shane_booth/cricket/toss.html
Mentioned on the ABC during the Adelaide test that in 2013 England hasnt lost a test in which it had won the toss but hadnt won a test when they lost the toss

Re: Ashes 3rd Test Perth Discussion

Is the toss of the coin too much an advantage?? I believe so and would rather before the series starts the winner of the coin elects to bat or bowl then the opposition decides next test??

I raised this on Friday and good to see some debate.
Look I like nothing better than belting the poms but believe the toss makes a huge advantage. Just go back to the last ashes series in England.

Re: Ashes 5th Test Sydney Discussion (Pink Test)

Oh yeah maybe Haddin is scared of facing Steyn Morkel and Philander.......................

On the last tour of SA , Brad was given a work out by several posters about his lack of form
Where are the same posters now ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Most have been very very quiet about Brad this series

I was one. I haven't been quiet this series. I've apologised.
However, his form in that series was still rubbish - keeping was stodgy (and let's not forget his bye-riddled start).
This series is the best I've ever seen him keep.

Re: Ashes 5th Test Sydney Discussion (Pink Test)

Bailey averaged 19 in the shield last season and not much more this season, him stinking it up was always going to happen.

Agree but I do like the theory of 'the team should be harder to get into than out off'

Bailey was given a good chance he failed he goes.

At least the next person knows that they will have a chance to prove themselves rather than just one test

I think Boof has really given the guys the confidence in knowing they will be given a decent crack

Yes, averaging 14 this year in real cricket and has been dropped by the Vics

One of Sleepys best posts ever :D

Jim , are you being a bit harsh on Finch's 14 average at FC level this season ?
He does average 28 in 68 innings
Well Bailey got a test gig on the back of averaging 18 in the Shield last season so Finch must be a monty to go to South Africa

Re: Test Squad for South African Tour - predictions & discus

The Aussies will be playing the first test in a South Australian State Guernsey out of respect for Clem Hill who played both Test Cricket and State football for SA.

Clem averaged 62.66 against South Africa in Tests, and this will be a fitting tribute to a legend.

Re: What did each era bring to the game

On the need for an all rounder, Steve Waugh held his spot for much longer than he should of early in his career because he bowled. Doug Walters in the 70s played the role of the 5th bowler.

There have been periods when the priority for an all rounder (a fifth bowler) has seemed less but it definitely is not a 21st century thing.

Diving in the field? I remember that being a TV stunt in the 80s with playing going feet first into the fence. Dean Jones was one who did it all the time.

You are right about the all rounder, I think this is clouded a little by our bowling attacks in the last 20 years, who have been up there with the best in history. No need for an all rounder when you are rolling teams, and even if you aren't, having warne to bowl means you don't really need one as he isn't getting smashed around almost ever

Re: Other International Cricket

FFS, New Zealand were never going to bowl India out in a day on that wicket, I think McCollum summed it up perfectly, after all he batted for about a day and half more on it than any of you having a go at him for batting on.
Pretty sure the New Zealand crowd were entertained and got their money's worth.

another expert comment after the event, ever heard the saying "cricket is a funny game"? any idea what that means? i am obviously banging my head against a brick wall on this one

for those that dont get what i am about:

I NEVER SUGGESTED THAT NZ SHOULD HAVE GIVEN INDIA THE CHANCE TO WIN THE GAME, THEY COULD HAVE DECLARED A BIT EARLIER TO PUT THE INDIANS UNDER MORE PRESSURE, 400 IN FRONT WITH 75ISH OVERS LEFT COULD HAVE GOT THEM A 2-0 RESULT, CAPICHE??!!!

Re: Test Squad for South African Tour - predictions & discus

Pattinson takes two years to play 5-6 tests.

Very disappointing loss. Our team has improved under Lehmann no doubt but we still can't handle reverse swing as a batting or bowling unit and we can't play swing or on slow decks. Fast and Bouncy we are a good show with Mitch dominant but once they take the juice out of the deck our batting is exposed.

Watto for Marsh. Need that extra bowling option and someone who will make a few runs.

REB

Re: Test Squad for South African Tour - predictions & discus

I think he will be for 40 overs for hopefully 160 runs (4 rpo) then declare with a lead of 400 and 150 overs at them

This. Except we will push at 5+ an over to try and get 450+ up.

Its going to be another great nights entertainment. The Aussie brand of cricket is so watchable. Win or lose it is always aggressive.

Re: Rnd 2 - Central v Norwood @ Playford Alive Oval (Sat 12/

I was never convinced about two things for this season. The first being the entry of the two AFL reserves teams (with the spin in that it will be good for the local clubs) and the second being the even more outrageous spin that channel 7's telecast will improve the profile of the SANFL.

Well this week's scheduling of the the Central District vs Norwood game is a disgrace. Channel 7 needs to honour its big bucks commitment to AFL telecast on Saturday afternoon so its the SANFL schedule, clubs and supporters that suffer. I have watched the reserves then league games for all 20 rounds every year for the last 15 years. Now because of a corporate decision, if I wish to continue to support my club I have to arrange my day for a 9 am and 12 noon start. This is how the new television regime values the local football? That is, if Central District was to use this game to at last break even then beginning the league game just after noon when supporters are busy with junior sport or other commitments is a recipe to ensure this will not happen. Basically, it's stuff the long term local supporters and their clubs just so the corporate TV network can maximise their corporate bucks.

This is a very bad joke Mr Olsen and Mr Whicker, not that you give a rat's. I wonder if there was any fine print to the agreement to televise one SANFL game per week or simply that channel 7 televised one game a week. This is another example of Corporations moving in to monopolise a market and when they do they basically reorganise everything to suit their self serving needs. So the score is corporate TV 1, community football supporters 0. I suspect the margin with this score line will only increase as the season progresses.
