Re: SANFL Draw

Interesting facts about opening round matches is that South have played every Round 1 match at home from 2000 except 2001 and 2011 at Woodville and 2007 at Encounter Bay. Sturts home match to start last year was their first since 2000. Norwood opened with a home match every year from 2001 to 2009

Average and median crowd figures to Round 8

I was interested in how much a few matches this year have skewed the average crowd figure. All other years are up to Round 10, which gives every year between 35-40 matches, with games played before AFL matches taken out, and double headers halved:

Year Average Median
1991 4866 4687
1992 4288 4086
1993 3929 3293
1994 4026 3444
1995 4570 3452
1996 3629 3244
1997 3559 2840

Decline of the long serving SANFL player since 2009

It probably does not surprise anyone to see this table. This represents the number of players whose career in each year spanned 10 seasons. It does include AFL listed players who got dropped from their AFL side (or promoted to the SANFL side ;) ), so it may be a bit artificial after 1990, and particularly 1997. I don't think it masks the fact that there are certainly not as many players who are long servers to the League. Or at least return to the SANFL after whatever absence may be - AFL, country, work etc

1990 46
1991 45
1992 46
1993 36
1994 29
1995 35
1996 36
1997 40
1998 34
1999 29
2000 36
2001 38
2002 38
2003 37
2004 35
2005 32
2006 31
2007 30
2008 39
2009 27
2010 34

Re: SANFL crowd numbers

Laptop with my figures being serviced at the moment should have something done by this time next week.
PhilH for each average figure you present I would appreciate also seeing variance and median. If it's not too much trouble, natch.

(edit) and another thing ... perhaps any argument regarding crowd changes across 2013-2014 ought to consider games between the sovereign 8 clubs in each year, among other things.

I'd be happy to knock up a few scripts to automate the above; got a bit of time on my hands for programming projects. PM me if you like.

From my crowd figures I have before this year:
Year Average Median
1997 3219 2732
1998 3689 3196
1999 3195 2706
2000 2957 2800
2001 3106 2677
2002 3101 2489
2003 2890 2502
2004 2817 2653
2005 2743 2591
2006 2874 2684
2007 2867 2565
2008 3065 2762
2009 2924 2725
2010 3073 2885
2011 3201 2888
2012 2880 2507
2013 2622 2432
2014 2812 (from Phils' post, and since I don't have all figures he can fill in the median)

Edit: There is a difference in average for 2013 from what Phil has, it's because the SANFL Annual Report differs from figures sometimes in the newspaper). I have changed some of mine to the Annual Report. It may also have happened in previous years too if this is the case before.

Re: SANFL crowd numbers

I don't see how an average crowd figure being up on a previously low year by approx 300, yet being lower than the average crowd figure in 2011really has anything much to do with the integrity of the league, the figures can be argued both ways. The facts are Adelaide supporters are massive no shows to games and they add f-all to crowd attendances and revenue.
Isn't the problem the fact that we've got two teams working off an open salary cap and access to players that SANFL clubs can't draft? For me, arguing about 300 more per game depending on what year you compare it to is missing the main point.

That's very true, but one of the selling points of the current composition of the competition was renewed interest, hence why it's a talking point. As far as I can tell even if the average was up by one from that pluvial 2013 season, it would be mission accomplished in some circles.

Re: Premiers despite not beating every team

After Round 7, and a most impressive win against North from my point of view, the Eagles were 6-1. From that point on, only four more wins were registered for the season - to the eventual 9th and 10th placed sides...and both meetings against the eventual premiers. Go figure.

Updated list of occasions where a premier that season failed to beat a team:
Year Premier Lost to Record
1924 Torrens Norwood 0-2-1
1932 Sturt Torrens 0-1-1
1934 Glenelg Torrens 0-2
1963 Port West 0-3
1976 Sturt South 0-1-1
1986 Glenelg Central 0-2
1993 Eagles Glenelg 0-1-1
1998 Port South 0-2
2003 Central Port 0-2
2010 Central Sturt 0-3
2014 Norwood Eagles 0-2

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

I would love to go back to the 80s and have 3 state leagues and 40,000 people supporting the local teams but it not going to happen as money control sports these days.

Not having a go at you mate, but I hate it when AFL apologists trot out lines thinking SANFL fans believe the glory days can be re-visited, because it's absolute fuggin BS!

Not one single Sanfl fan is under any illusion as to our place in the pecking order, we just want an equal, non-compromised competition. We're more than happy with crowds of 2.5-3k, offset by a few lower and a few blockbusters.

We'll still continue to make AFL players.

What is unreasonable in wanting to be un-interfered with? AFL supporters, the vast majority of whom have zero knowledge and interest when it comes to the Sanfl, continually cast aspersions that just aren't factual to try and support their attitudes of "no other competition in the country matters, we should use them as we see fit"

Gold.

One thing I've noticed (not so much on this site and not other SANFL based forum sites either) is that those who don't give two hoots about the SANFL ( only their AFL club) suddenly become experts on what's good for this competition; which is really only what's good for their AFL club.

Edit: By 'suddenly become experts' was when the Reserves team issue gained legs in 2013

Oh, and here's another thing, after that article was released I think is the best timing to say it:

Last year all we heard was crowds were up on 2013...over and over. Not one mention was made of the real poor weather in 2013 in comparison to the whole of 2014.

This year crowds are well down and it's due to the 'poor' weather.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Exclude the two Anzac Day matches last year and you average 2907 to this point.

Do the same for this year (well, the 24th) and you get 2541.

Want another comparison? 2009 had not two, but three matches badly weather affected on Anzac Day. In my table, 2009 averaged 3173. Take those three matches out and it's 3306. My point being, even that year is miles ahead of what we have this year even though one of the biggest drawing days on the SANFL calendar also had shoddy weather.

And if other days this year are cited, 'poor weather' isn't just a chance of a shower or a light shower or cooler than normal conditions.

Re: Chris Judd Retires

My first memory of Judd was in a Port v WC game at footy park, think it was his first season. Bounce in the middle of the ground, won by WC ruckman, assuming it was Cox, ball lands in the middle of a pack and all of a sudden this quick young guy grabs the ball, breaks his way through the pack in the centre circle, sprints towards the goals at the southern end, no one gets near him as he slots it through from 55. Thought to myself then "Wow, this kid could be anything!"
That's my first memory of Judd too, I was actually at this game. I reckon he kicked another goal similar to that in the same quarter.

Re: The 2015 Attendance Comparisons Thread

As I said, our embarrassing and pathetic performance in our previous home game would have impacted on Monday's crowd. To suggest otherwise is to pretend that onfield performance does not impact on crowds which everyone knows is plain ridiculous. It was a good weekend for crowds in spite of some of the ridiculously gloomy predictions I saw on here, including predictions of 2k crowds for Sturt v Adelaide at Unley.

Reality is we were hit by an unusual burst of Winter weather early in the season right when crowds are generally at their maximum. Was only talking to someone tonight about Anzac eve at Glenelg; he has been going to that ground for about 45 years and reckons he has never seen rain that heavy, but I guess the weather did not impact crowds both there and at Adelaide Oval that night? That was all no AFL protest too? We now seem to be hitting a run of good weather for this time of year and what happens? Crowds start to edge up! But some on here want to ignore other factors that impact crowds to further their argument against the changes to the comp. I absolutely get that there are passionate views about the current set up and that's fine, but if we are going to have a logical discussion about crowds you cannot ignore factors such as weather and onfield performance that have always been major factors just because you might want to further a point.

lol, by the same token, last season all of the "pro" afl cock gobblers were quite happy telling all and sundry that crowds were up over 2013, conveniently ignoring the fact that they were infact lower than every season for the last 15 years apart from 2013, and conveniently ignoring the same weather factors you are stating here, 2014 was a very dry year. you cant have it both ways.
Correct, and as I said elsewhere:
Oh, and here's another thing, after that article was released I think is the best timing to say it:

Re: Rnd 10 - Eagles v Adelaide @ M T Hyunda Oval (Sat 20/6)

Part time fitness versus full time fitness certainly showed in this match! Ah well, just glad to get the win for the first time and bag two points.
Boyd off for all of the second half didn't help either.

What for, do you know?

McGregor another 3 goals and probably should have had 4-5.

Doesn't count as a good performance; wasn't wet weather footy :p

Something today reminded me of a match at Woodville in 1999...back then Port fans had cheered when they heard that Western Bulldogs had overcome a 40 point 3QT deficit to beat the Crows. Today, there was another cheer at a random moment; I assumed Carlton had won...I was right.

Can add Frazer Dale to the injury list now. Was kicked by a horse at work on Monday and has a broken leg and 2 broken ribs.

I wonder how many Crows and Power players work with horses for that to happen to them during the week?

Re: Round 17 Eagles vs Adelaide on Sunday

I did say if we are supposed to be a premiership contender then we would be be within a chance. There you are! What an effort today to get over the line with just one player left on the bench after 3QT - the achilles heel in the side this year is the 4th quarter but toughed it out to the end.

I guess McGregor and Thompson have the four weeks now to prepare for the 2nd Semi if it is bad enough... there is enough depth for the likes of Boyd, Goldsworthy, Thurlow, Raikiwasa, Batley, Press and Rowland who are able to step into vacancies left after today. Hopefully the side doesn't have a big let down after todays effort as we still have two rounds to go to have a good hit out before the finals. Wedgetail, I (and you probably) could see the players were more spent than jubilant after today; thankfully we don't have to back this match up at Norwood next week!

Also, what a turnout today; well done to Phil H and crew! With our effort today, hopefully we have won over some new young fans!

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Perhaps some are staying away because they are indifferent to the competition but times change and rivalries change, move on. The challenge for the SANFL and the clubs is to put on a product which entices the fans out to the local game. I witnessed an excellent game 2 weeks ago between the Eagles & the Crows. If there were more of that standard you would have supporters flocking back to the grounds.
This is a comment from 'Walter' published at the end of Faulkner's article, and it touches on the perception that non-SANFL people (and based on its context, I'll assume Walter is a Crows supporter) have for the competition.

The most offensive and patronising thing is the 'move on' sentiment. Stop sooking about your league, times change, so harden up and get with the program, right? A lot of people have 'moved on' following the introduction of the Crows and Port in the last 25 years. They have accepted its place as a second tier competition. Moreover, they have spent (and continue to spend) a lot of time, money, and passion investing in their clubs, and to have a Johnny-come-lately tell you that you should disregard what it means to you is, well, flat-out offensive. When the boot is on the other foot and Crows are on the receiving end of unfavorable administrative decisions from above, then let's see who has the courage to 'move on'.

I find it amusing and annoying that those who spend the least amount of time participating in the SANFL seem to be the most opinionated voices in terms of how it should be managed and administered.

You know, 'Walter' that perfomance two weeks ago, can be seen as this:

The top side of the SANFL, two games ahead of 2nd place plays the 7th placed favourite . The top placed side leaves nothing on the park to get over the line by 4 points. Does that sound right in a 10 team competition?

Believe it or not, I do think the improved attendances for the AFL teams have some part - please note I said 'some' though. If you have been a follower of my tables in the Attendance Comparison thread, you'll note that 2005 had the lowest attendances prior to 2013. In 2005, the Crows and Power were both in the finals, even playing against each other. Whereas in 2011, the two were at the other end of the table, with of course the Power just avoiding the wooden spoon and you note the increase in the SANFL attendance.

Where I am going to target that article is the 'healthy' crowds in August. This table features minor round averages in August only:

A staggering FIVE players made their debut for Peel today. In a final, for a league football team. I can think of one or two players who made their debut in a final for the Eagles (Matthew Stokes, Paul Stewart). But FIVE! Surely a record. (Spelly?)

In my records from 1983, Ben Hart and Peter Turner for North in the 1st Semi of 1990 is the only instance of two debutants in a final

The same thing happened in '04; I say let the reserves celebrate all they want - at worst it'll fire the league side up for next year.

You forgot 2000 and 2001 as well. The 2001 win broke a 20 game winning streak by Central (they lost the opening round of that season)

The 23 wins in a row surpasses the previous Reserves record of 21 by West Torrens (Rd 14 1915-Rd 5 1920).

Re: Favourite Norwood Player

Ducker was very talented, I think from memory he was injury prone.

I think he got drafted to Melbourne FC in late 80s, but I dont think he moved over.

Would be interesting to know his record (games played/goals scored) in late 80s, when the Redlegs probably had a list capable of making at least 1 Grand Final.

1986: 3 games 6 goals 0 behinds
1987: 18 games 54.31
1988: 13 games 39.16
1989: 19 games 46.25
1990: 9 games 4.2
1991: 10 games 44.19
1992: 5 games 15.11 (last game was Round 6 and didn't play again until Rd 9 1993, and indeed played in that GF, Flying High)
1993: 16 games 47.37
Total: 93 games 255.141

It will end up being like the Sheffield Shield

The Taminga Hotel has the biggest salad and veg bar I've seen...also has an ice cream machine. The Mon-Sat lunch price is reasonable, but the other times are a bit steep.

The first stat at the top was broken today, with Glenelg winning by 55 points and the scoring shots at 23 apiece.

Re: Ask Spelly - version 2018

The only other occasion since the current scoring method was adopted in 1897 was in Rd 11 1898 when Port kicked 2.3 in the last quarter to beat Torrens by 1 point - 2.7 to 2.6

In short:
Rd 11 1898 Port (0.4) 2.7 Torrens (2.6) 2.6 Alberton
Rd 3 1909 Port (0.2) 1.4 Norwood (0.5) 0.5 Alberton
GF 1919 Sturt (0.4) 3.5 North (2.6) 2.6 Adelaide
Rd 3 2018 Eagles (0.10) 2.16 Port (2.3) 4.4 Alberton

The last time a team was goalless at 3QT:
Rd 14 2002 South (0.12) 2.15 Port (8.10) 12.14 Noarlunga

The last time a team with 10 or less points at 3QT did not lose:
Rd 13 2012 Norwood (1.4) 5.7 West (4.10) 4.12 Richmond
http://safooty.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36319

The last time there was a lower scoring match aggregate then 56 points:
Rd 21 2010 West 3.4 Port 2.4 Richmond (38 pts)
http://safooty.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29785

The last time the home side at Alberton had a score lower than the 4.4 (28) was the 1909 match above

Re: Ask Spelly - version 2018

I've got another one, there were no goals scored during the 2nd and 3rd quarters - only the 6th time from 1897 onwards, and the only time between Rd 3 1909 and now was the 1948 1st Semi:
West 2.5 2.8 2.13 7.18 (60)
Sturt 2.4 2.5 2.8 4.9 (33)
Adelaide, 21035

Have you seen this weeks round of scores in the AFL? Just one 100 point score out of the 7 matches so far.

Re: R5 Norwood v Ravens

And, I have checked with all relevant parties, this match has had the most interest shown of all Adelaide reserves matches since Taylor Walker had nine soft ball grabs at Glenelg

23 is the most number of behinds scored against the Crows Res team; the previous record was in that match - (Glenelg scored 17.21), Crows also scored 13.8 in that game, too

2/229 off the 20 overs. I've never seen a hit wicket off a wide before, but that's how Finch was dismissed for 172
