Re: Cruises

Did a 24 night Mediterranean cruise through Holland America last year- the most amazing thing I have done without a doubt.

Rome the highlight, Venice and Santorini a very close top 3.

Monte Carlo was a highlight too (visited there 3 days before the 2013 Monaco GP)- took a tour of the track which was pretty cool. Their casino is something else, my 5 euro chip adorns my cabinet proudly  $-)
How much is a Mediterranean cruise like that worth Valleys? Would you have to do a cruise that long to see everything or are there shorter Mediterranean cruises? Say 12-14 nights?

Believe it or not- we paid $4500 pp for our trip. Reason why it was so cheap- we were the first tour group booking through Phil Hoffmann for this particular itinerary. I think the same itinerary this year is priced around $6000pp.

In my opinion, Europe is so diverse and so large, you could spend 6 months over there and not see everything you want to. We spent 1 month and took in Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Marsielle, Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, Dubrovnik, Ephesus, Instanbul, Santorini, Corfu, Athens, Katakolon, Lesbos amongst others.

Here is something similar: http://www.cruiseabout.com.au/product/Europe-Mediterranean-3125641

If you consider something like it TDK- do it properly. Not saying for one second that what Pag's inlaws to be are doing isn't a great option, but for me, Europe is such a magical part of the world, 12 days IMO just isn't enough to take it all in!

Re: Crows 2014

Do you think we have been unsuccessful over the past 25 years? I think we have. Wouldn't have taken much more than a bit more luck to play in a couple of grand finals

Define successful? Two premierships in the club's existence, Brisbane won more than that in a 3 year period. I think the club kind of lost it's way in the Neil Craig years, near enough was good enough. Not even one GF appearance to show for the dominance of 2005-2006.

Same could be said for Port though Gozu, 1 flag to show for 2001-04. Essendon are the same- utterly dominated the competition between 99-01 and 1 Flag, North Melbourne made 7 consecutive preliminary finals between 93-99 for 3 GF appearances.

It takes luck to just make the GF, then you need to win the bastard....

Re: Port 2014 - Pre-Season/General Discussion

"We lost. I don't like that".

Those were the words of Ken Hinkley post game- and sentiments I share. Don't get me wrong- i'm a realist- we were coming up against our most powerful opposition this season, on their home deck (a ground we have won at only 3 times in our history), on the back of some un-inspiring football from us of late. I was expecting a ripping game, and what a ripping contest it was. I'm an incredibly proud supporter at the minute - but we lost. That is the defining point. Our expectations as a football club need to reflect this attitude too- we can no longer be proud of very honorable performances- we must win at all costs, and if we don't, the playing group must understand why, and learn. A message that Ken is delivering beautifully. A Geelong mentality.

Some numbers, that as a fan i'm not too happy seeing given the result:

Hit Outs: 52-29
Contested Possessions: 165-139
Disposals 424-369
Clearances: 51-33
Stoppage Clearances: 34-21
Tackles: 81-81
Inside 50's: 62-51

These numbers, believe it or not, are all in Port Adelaide's favour.

So where did it go wrong? Skills, and 1%ers. When the game was in the balance in the last quarter, and was a real contest for the best part of the 1st 3, it was Sydney, who not only executed the basics just that fraction better, but it was their work off the footy, that won the game.

How's this stat:

1 percenters: 65-45 in favour of Sydney. Forget Buddys overall scoreline. Yep- he single handedly won the game in the last, but look at how he got 2 of his last 3 goals. A brilliant chase down tackle brought about his 3rd goal when Bob decided to zone off for the clearing Pittard kick, and his 5th was a result of a mark outside 50, and the cheekiest, but most efficient block by Nick Smith gave him the 2-3 steps needed to gain enough momentum to bomb from 50. Those 2 moments won the game for mine. That stuff wins you premierships.

Congratulations to the swans- i can't wait for our encounter in 6 weeks time.

My top 5:

Robbie Gray- if I could rate a game 11/10, this would be it. 35 possessions (16 of them contested), 10 clearances, 7-8 score involvements and 3 tackles. I remember saying after the showdown last year (as did Tim Watson), that Chad Wingard after that performance booked himself into the AA side, and I cant help but think Robbie's game had that feel about it. Keep that form up, and not only is he a monty for AA, but an outside chance for the charlie. One must admire his form post knee recon. Remarkable.

Brad Ebert- THAT is the Brad Ebert I got used to seeing early this year. The bloke that oozes leadership, and puts his mates on his back and wills them and himself to contest after contest after contest. 40 touches (18 contested- a game high), 9 clearances, 5 tackles, 8 I50's and a goal. Went away for a bit there, but hopefully that is the return to form for Ebo that hangs around for the remainder of the year. We need big game players- he is becoming a serious cog in our midfield unit.

Jay Schulz- Just about as lionhearted a performance as it gets from Jay. Played on Richards for most of the day and got just reward in 4 goals for effort after effort. Richards had a quality game himself, picking up 4 rebound 50's and 6 1%ers, so it was a great dual to watch unfold.

Matty Broadbent- I thought he took a while to get into the game, and was a bit indecisive with his skills in the first half, but was huge as the rebounding half back in the 2nd half. Finished the game with 24 touches, 4 rebound 50's, 4 inside 50's and helped himself to a goal. Only thing that let him down was poor disposal efficiency (54%), but had a solid day for mine.

Kane Cornes- Loved his defensive game on Hannebery, kept him to 13 touches whilst collecting 18 himself. It was the pure defensive game from Cornes yesterday, and Hannebery was forced a lot of the time into winning contested ball in the Kennedy mould, rather than working his magic outside. 0 I50's and just the 1 goal (courtesy of a dumb free IIRC).

You could throw Wingard, Monfries, White, Boak, Westhoff, Hombsch all in there as honourable mentions. In the end, Sydney's 18-21 just got the better of ports.

I'd expect 2 changes this week against the dogs. Kane Mitchell showed yesterday that no amount of effort and gut running makes up for quality ball use and clear thought process against quality opposition. Turned the footy over far too often, missed some sitter set shots, and that bump on Josh Kennedy which saw Kennedy bounce off, and kick the goal, had me almost throwing the remote at the telly and sending my poor dog running for cover. He and Hammer, who i'd expect to miss with his ankle (seriously, 5 ankles in 4 weeks- what is up with that?), will make way for Polec and hopefully Benny Newton, who picked up another 29 for the pies today.

Im confident we will redeem against the dogs this week (who played mighty well today against the pies i might add), but hopefully Kenny gets the lads up and about for another strong rebound performance, just like round 4 against Brisbane.

Re: Crows 2014

Adelaide should be a top 8 side in my opinion.

Half the problem is, it seems they always want to play the blame game and never accept responsibility - especially the supporters:

*Oh the umpires cost us again
*Sando needs to be sacked
*Need to swing the axe on these players
*The Tippett saga has ruined us
*We never wanted to move from AAMI Stadium
*Once we get Tex back we will be fine (prior to his return)

And if a Port supporter harasses Crows supporters:
*Where's your tarps?
*Bandwagon jumper
*07 Grand Final
*We went back to back
*MOOOOODRAAAAA (probably)
*Did i mention the tarps? :P

It was 2008 and I believe the margin was circa 100+ pts.........but who's counting ;)

Also only 34,000 at the Portress last wkend............bring back the tarps!!

Re: Worst AFL media person..

Jason Dunstall brought up an interesting point concerning the calibre of commentary teams of late, in particular those who commentated the Essendon v Adelaide game on saturday night.

Josh Jenkins' goal (yeah, for a big fella learning the game- it was a pretty bloody good goal)- Won the tap, roved his ruckwork, ran his 15 and banged it home from 65. Matty Richardson and BT were discussing twitter at the time of the goal. ****ing Twitter.

Some of the best moments in footy relate to the commentary. "Oh Jesalenko, you Beauty!" "Cox throws it onto the left, one last roll of the dice for the eagles..LEO BARRY YOU STAR"..ok you get the point....

Instead of "Jenkins from 65 GOES BANG!" (ok maybe a bit more innovative)....its "twitter".....*silence*.

FFS- commentate the ****ing game you muppets.

Re: Port 2014 - Pre-Season/General Discussion

**** that hurts. That really really ****ing hurts.

Remember those days when the media were pumping us up as a premiership favourite? Put the tag away fellas. We are behind Sydney, Fremantle and Hawthorn and today emphasised that. I'm not for a second saying we are done this season- far from it, but there is still a little way to go before we are out and out the best side.

Im never one to play the blame game and look for excuses- but as soon as Trengove went down, the entire state of the game changed. For a while now, I have felt deep down we are 1 KPP short, and today we went crying for it. Our entire structure went to water with that injury. Would an extra tall have won us the game? no- would it be the difference between top 5 and top 2- definitely!

Adelaide showed today how good a side they can be when it all clicks- but bugger me id hate to see that stuff today in comparison with last week. Ports hunger for the contest just wasnt there today, and we were found wanting, massively.

Is it our flag chances gone? i wouldn't go that far. You can kiss top spot gone, to come home against freo, sydney, collingwood and the coast....far more nervous about the latter 2 than I was a fortnight ago.

As for Adelaide- **** it pains me to say this- well done. Jacobs immense, Thompson continues to hurt when left unrespected, Talia huge on Schulz and Betts a matchwinner.

My top 5:

Travis Boak- Our skipper was massive today, but talk about bugger all support. He and Wines led the mid brigade today. 33 touches (17 contested), 10 clearances, 6 I50's and a goal- brilliant performance on a tough day at the office.

Ollie Wines- Another one to hold his head high. 29 touches (11 contested) and 6 tackles (a stat which we absolutely smashed- shows we were 2nd to the footy for most of the day I think). Love this kid- 19 and a bull around the footy- just no mates today unfortunately.

Jasper Pittard- Plenty of knockers 2 weeks ago, yet the only defender willing to offer significant drive from the back half I thought. 20 touches and 7 R50's (at 92% DE). I think Ken backing this fella in 2 weeks ago when he was at his (potentially) lowest ebb after the swans is significant- and his last 2 games have been great to watch. A real positive to take out of todays game.

Matt White- Did all he could today to break the great wall that was the adelaide back 6 today. That goal in the 1st was special, finished the day with 17 touches, 8 tackles and 5 I50's, respectable numbers for such a dominant AFC back 6. Continued to work hard into space, provided some good link up run. Can hold his head high.

Matty Broadbent- After the 1st 4 it gets pretty bleak- broady's numbers stack up ok. 19 touches and 7 R50's. Often mismatched once Trengove went down, and did well to force the ball boundary side and did everything in his power to generate offensive movement- solid performance.

But how about the names amongst our worst. Lobbe, Ebert, Wingard (1 real stinker and out come the knockers), Polec, Westhoff, Hartlett...shudder at that power fans- We are like waking up with a fithy hangover and a fat sheila "bad" when they all go missing.

Seriously though- what the **** is going on with our umpires this season. Before you Adelaide fans get your knickers in a knot- someone tell me how Dangerfield gets the free for ripping Impey's head off? Someone tell me how Gray wasnt done holding the ball in that 2nd term (could throw a number of calls for HTB in there too)....fair dinkum AFL- get your **** together.

Massive game against the bombers next week. Massive. How we respond will determine where we finish I think. Cant wait to hear Kenny's presser.....hope he tore ****ing shreds off his leaders tonight.

Back to the little hole I go..

Not to divert attention, but my wife had her 36 week scan yesterday, and it looks as though we are going to have quite a large little boy on the way, upwards of 9lbs is the word from the obstetrician (have fun with that Mrs Valleys  :axe: ), so the chances of early delivery are looking stronger by the day. Re: Round 16 - live scores, results & conversing.

I'll be honest- im getting sick to death of this "WE are the pride of SA, we are the best team in SA, we have more members, our crowd volume decibel reading is louder, my dick is bigger than your dick" tit for tat argument between crows and power fans and the SA media.

Who gives a flying **** about those numbers. Right now- neither side looks favourite to win the flag- port have dropped a little and need a massive turnaround in form to challenge the beasts, and adelaide are too inconsistent to even be considered a threat.

Dont get me wrong- im all for footy banter, but this is dead set ****ing ridiculous. "We registered 110 decibels of crowd noise- we are the loudest team" "GO US!" Give me a break.

Right now as far as im concerned- 2 numbers matter between the sides. Premierships won and showdowns won. Split at 1 all.

No wonder other states think our fans are laughable....whilst we are celebrating members and decibel readings, other fans celebrate premierships. Give me that any day of the ****ing week.

Dont get me wrong- I have loved what we have been able to do as far as form reversal, but i'm wanting more.

Please Port Adelaide- snap out of your form slump and give me something real, something meaningful, something every fan will recognise and congratulate us on, to celebrate.

Re: Port 2014 - Pre-Season/General Discussion

Cheers Benny and FS- nice to read that a few enjoy my ramblings.

I wont be doing a report on the bombers game, as I didn't sit down and watch it due to a work function. I'm not comfortable reporting on games I didn't see, as numbers can be misleading, especially in games like that.

My wife, who was at home watching the game, did report that Essendon's tackling pressure and contested ball were very good saturday night. I cant help but get the feeling that Port have been worked out over the last month. Fingers crossed Kenny can enforce a stronger plan B over the next fortnight and get us back on track.

FS- as for Gus- im very concerned for him and our small forward contingent. Gus fought a nil all draw against Smith, but was very quiet on saturday night again. His numbers in terms of disposals and goals are down on last year, which is why he became such a damaging player last season, due to his offensive output as well as his defensive output (his defensive numbers are actually on par with where they were last year- he just isnt hitting the scoreboard enough in 2014).

I dont quite understand the hate for Jasper. Yeah- his brainfades come at costly times, and can result in opposition scores- but you will get that from him. Since the Sydney game, his offensive drive and willingness to counter-attack have left him in our best 5 regularly imo. From what I have read- he and O'Shea were the only defenders willing to take the game on- which really does highlight the holes that Trengove and Carlisle leave back there, such as Hombsch and Jonas' offensive playmaking with a full back 6. It didnt help that Broadbent couldnt get near it on saturday night either.

Big game this week against the tigers it goes without saying.

Re: Diary of some pregnant blokes

Well guys, little Aidan Thomas arrived into the world at 5:30pm yesterday evening, weighing in at a healthy 8lb 5oz.

Mrs Valleys delivered via C Section, and unfortunately was put to sleep during the birth due to issues with the spinal anaesthesia. She is recovering very well which is a great sign. Anyone that has seen their wives/partners go through labour would agree that it is incredibly tough to watch at times, especially not to mention what they are going through. I not ashamed to say i'm really proud of my wife's efforts. She did everything she could to deliver naturally and I was more emotional for her having to miss such a precious moment than I was for the birth of our child.

Bubs is feeding very well which is also a great sign.

FC- anyone that has seen me play football knows that is hardly a compliment

What a day and a half its been- but I am one very proud dad and husband :D :D

She did everything she could to deliver naturally and I was more emotional for her having to miss such a precious moment than I was for the birth of our child.

big congrats mate, i have that labour thing to look forward to in February 2015

Thanks BD, appreciate it mate.

Embrace the anti-natal time frame mate. This thread was started on 21/1/14- if that doesn't indicate how quickly time passes then I don't know what!

You both will make fantastic parents as you have been prepping for this for so long. Good things come to those who wait and you will absolutely fall in love when he/she is here :D

Re: Robin Williams - your favourite memories/movies

The first film I ever saw him in was Jumanji when I was a young kid.

Have enjoyed most of his movies and stand up performances- jumanji will remain my favourite.

Re: Things that you rate!

I rate my wife.

I'm not usually one for sharing my sob stories, but here goes.

Recently, my depression has started to get the better of me and this, combined with strong back pain, is causing me to have daily anxiety attacks.

Most people would tell me to just get over it.

Not her.

Today, she showed the patience of a saint, She woke up, helped me get my breathing on track, rubbed my back and shoulders, and talked me through it. She then suggested I return to see my counselor, and I agreed.

For me, my depression and anxiety are manageable 95% of the time. It's times like this that I appreciate my wife even more.

That's what relationships are all about mate- glad that your wife has recommended you resume counselling and you have agreed- it truly is the best thing to air out your difficulties to a professional. Even better of her to instill a calming influence in the event of an anxiety attack. It's sad just how many people feel that resource isn't an option.

I'm happy for you that you have taken those steps mate, critical in the battle. Never feel like you can't beat the bastard that is depression and anxiety. I'm hoping for you that it all clears up mate. I've been in and out of a spell of anxiety twice of late, and it's a personal reward when you get out the other side. PM me if you ever need to clear the air- as dogger said: we all have acted like idiots on here but this place is as good as any to air your thoughts. No-one will ever chasticise you for speaking up in times of sadness.

I wasn't aware of their 90's history, Zed. That makes Goodwood's run even more remarkable!

Re: Diary of some pregnant blokes

Tally so far:

Boys: 2 (Arch44 and Valleys07)

Girls: 2 (Carey and WUB)

Who's up next?

Mythical Creature , Ron Burgundy PatowalongaPirate ?

Yep, 3 weeks to go today. Not sure what we are having so can't add to your tally yet.

Last Friday morning we welcomed little Millah Jade into our family. Was a great surprise not knowing we were having a girl but are very happy and now have the pigeon pair.

We are both very very thankful that we are all healthy.

Congratulations MC- glad to hear all is well!

Who gives a stuff who eats who's words. Neither will be premiership players in 2014 unless a miracle happens.
