Re: Round 7 - Port Magpies v South @ Alberton inc Post Matc

Was disappointed that South did not get near it against Port yesterday, perhaps if Port had a group of injuries as the Crows have it might have been a more even contest, yet with the bulk of the team being professional AFL players and the rest being the SANFL Magpies players that the club wanted to keep at the end of 2013 its not real surprise that at the sheer strength that they are they are going to belt the living suitcase out of anyone who plays them.

There is no point casting blame or vitriol on the PAFC though, the SANFL presidents that voted yes were well aware that this is how there team would look and that they would likely dominate the SANFL competition, Port are only playing within the parameters the SANFL set for them. My only real hope is that when Port win the SANFL Grand Final that it be over a side that voted them into the competition and not over a side that did not.

Could be interesting to see what happens when Port play a side at the bottom of the SANFL ladder, one would think that a 100pt plus thrashing would be a strong possibility, if that does happen, hopefully they too are a side that voted them in to the competition also.

Re: Round 7 - Glenelg v Central @ Gliderol inc Post Match

Crowds started suffering IMO when I noticed a large drop off in the younger supporters while we were still dominating. Coincided with the pressure being placed on the club to clear out those wascally webels. In reality the problem was there in most other clubs, not just ours, and it was merely a way of bringing us back to the pack. We did ourselves no favours during the initial popularity of the night matches, not allowing all and sundry back to the club. There is no doubt as is normally the case with lower socioeconomic areas, the GFC created huge problems.

Add to that the dilution of the competition to reserves status and we have a perfect storm.

We sure did on satdy!

Re: Well played North supporters

From what a heard today on the radio between 5AA/Triple M from Rowey, Roo, Ditts, Jarman, Mcdermott, Lewis and others it just made me think what media puppets these guys have become. Obviously they have a job to do by promoting and "talking up"the AFL - it is what they are paid to do but I am sure someone is putting the money in the pockets of the media outlets in Adelaide to not say anything"negative"about both Port/Crows.

Just showed me what complete media wH0res and puppets they have become.....very sad to see once such passionate players of the SANFL not have an opinion. (or have been shutdown by the powers that be!!!!) :(

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

I would love to go back to the 80s and have 3 state leagues and 40,000 people supporting the local teams but it not going to happen as money control sports these days.

Not having a go at you mate, but I hate it when AFL apologists trot out lines thinking SANFL fans believe the glory days can be re-visited, because it's absolute fuggin BS!

Not one single Sanfl fan is under any illusion as to our place in the pecking order, we just want an equal, non-compromised competition. We're more than happy with crowds of 2.5-3k, offset by a few lower and a few blockbusters.

We'll still continue to make AFL players.

What is unreasonable in wanting to be un-interfered with? AFL supporters, the vast majority of whom have zero knowledge and interest when it comes to the Sanfl, continually cast aspersions that just aren't factual to try and support their attitudes of "no other competition in the country matters, we should use them as we see fit"

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

i dont think it can go back to the previous system where the players were spread throughout the sanfl clubs, and i dont want it to go back to that, it was a crap system (but still better than it is now)

I know that I'm in the minority but I did not mind it, and that is probably based on the Stewart Dew, Shannon Hurn and Justin Westhoff examples. I liked being able to see at least some of the local lads being able to play league, some AFL, come back get some kicks and development and help the team. Imported guys like Guerra seemed to have a real feel for the club. The disruption seemed to be balanced against the benefits, but I suppose looking back we were in the middle of the dynasty so that perspective may be rose tinted.

i think it actually worked quite well during the season, but fell over come finals time when the afl clubs were often reluctant to have their players at risk in the sanfl when the afl clubs season was over. it wasnt perfect, but it was better than the current situation

edit: i should say, it was a crap system compared to not having the interferance of the afl players at all. for what it was, it worked, and just fell over at the most important point of the season for 5 clubs. it would be better than what we have now, however i still dont think that we can go back to that system. that bridge has been burned

Parkinson can GAGF!

Fair go Jim, this winter sport of ours has never been played in rain or cold until this year .. Is Jake Parkinson new to the country or something?

“Our other key indicators are up — membership is up three per cent. Media interest and website activity is up. This tells us there is a vibrant and successful SANFL. And we are working at making it stronger .”

How so Jake? Any chance of elaborating on such a broad comment, with, I dunno, maybe an explanation of how? Maybe it was by having only two teams play in round 1?

Somehow I have a lot more trust in someone like Kris Grant to have a better idea of the SANFL competition than this clown.

Re: Round 7 Adelaide v Port Balaklava Sunday 1.10pm

Just want to say thanks for those who came up and got involved with the day. Our local community supported it pretty well, not so much the travelling public but with the gourmet weekend in the Clare Valley, no "Tex factor" and Channel 7 broadcasting it live, we were up against it to pull a decent crowd.
I worked the whole game so didn't see much of it but the people I served beer to, including the vocal purple-haired Port lady, all had positive comments about how the oval was presented, food and drinks available etc.
The players who signed autographs were great and Tony Modra was an excellent ambassador, he hung around and mingled with people.
So, while the crowd was down on what we would have liked, the club is proud of our efforts to present a quality arena with an excellent standard of catering.
CFS Foundation also said the money coming in for parking and general donations was crazy, so for them, it was a great success.
Both clubs were great to work with in organising it, along with Matt Duldig from the SANFL and his team. Hope they continue to take SANFL to the regions in the future.

Re: Round 7 Adelaide v Port Balaklava Sunday 1.10pm

Was a good day OnSong. Didn't see you so I must have been drinking my froffies from another beer tent . Oval looked the best I have ever seen it, so the footy club should be proud of how they presented it. From my perspective, the weather was sunny, beer was cold and my steak sanga had double meat (thanks buttsy) so I went home reasonably happy.

As for carparking, I managed to park in some unlucky bastards driveway , but it looked as though the CFS would have made a killing which is great to see.

What was the crowd in the end mate? We had a guess of somewhere between 1500 and 2000. Always hard to tell though.

Or the eskie you snuck in through the gate!!!!

Na I've never snuck beers into a local footy ground (Adelaide Oval different story). Would rather support each individual club. Pisses me off no end when people bring their own drinks into my club so I have no right to criticise if I do it back to them.

Re: R12: Norwood v Centrals - Saturday @ Norwood

Centrals' tackling pressure has been a feature this season but is a hell of a lot more evident in their wins/draws this season. A 22+ disparity in tackling pressure between when they win/draw and lose is huge. And 99 tackles in a game is comfortably a season record.

Boring to attacking ?

I have always said the SANFL coaching is about 5 years behind AFL trends. Have a couple of clubs caught on that the boring slow down , block up, straggle , very defensive and protect an early lead game ,is beatable at SANFL level? West seem quite attacking whilst defensively good as do the Eagles ? Two of the top 3 clubs and have played 1 less game than some.
I think the landscape is changing and that's a good thing. Where to for some coaches if that's true.

2015 Premiership Standard

Have attached some reading material for today given the strange phenomenon of having no SANFL on a winter Saturday, so I ripped off the Fox Footy AFL version of the Premiership Standard - it compares the SANFL premiers of the last 10 years with how teams are tracking this year by means of scoring for/against limits.

In a nutshell, the premiers of the last 10 years have averaged over 94 points for and less than 70 points against in their years of triumph. No team this year achieves those figures, but West Adelaide is quite close (92 and 70).

* A disclaimer/warning like with all the things I post - it contains a high level of colour and rubbish. Make of it what you will.

Re: Norwood v Crows 2.10 Saturday

Pretty funny odds for a 2nd v 8th game at 2nds home ground.
A side at full strength and full of pro's v a side at half strength and made up of part timers, nup Ravens should be $1.10 :D
That's it.
These are the moments where the farce is so highlighted. In a normal competition a side surging from the bottom of the table signifies new found belief,or that things have clicked between team mates or an exciting new prospect has found his feet, ready to take the next step step. This genuinely validates the competition because they've discovered "what it's all about". When you've got a team suddenly winning games because they're getting topped up from a multi million dollar reservoir of talent from the next level up....
Well I guess it's good for the AFL pros, isn't it? And that's the main thing. Lucky we've got them to tell us what's good for us too.

Re: The 2015 Attendance Comparisons Thread

Jake Parkinson will be able to quote key indicators such as website activity and media interest increasing - everyone's interested in how quickly the thing is falling apart.

yep, because spending a couple of minutes checking your sides team before the game (because of the dearth of info now in the paper, and who would buy that anyway?) and then another minute sunday evening checking the results is really putting money in the clubs coffers. it is by far the best indicator of the health of the competition.....

Re: Doctors attending SANFL matches

Post AFC/PAFC it has been extremely difficult to find Doctors to assist at SANFL clubs. When I first started at Sturt in 1980, when training was only 2 nights per week and match day, there was a Doctor and a Physiotherapist present at every session. Now, there is no Doctor during the week (this may be different at other clubs) but we do have a Physiotherapist at two training sessions. If the players need to see a Doctor, we receive priority service from SPORTSMED.SA during the week, so, it just means that players need to adjust their schedule during the day (like most of us) instead of having a Doctor provided at training. I wouldn't complain about this service, as our main GP often sees our players during his lunch break or at the end of his consulting list - the man is a champion, albeit a glutton for punishment!

It is a big commitment and unfortunately at our level of sport everything occurs out of hours. In saying that we receive outstanding service from a panel of Doctors/Specialists so that league matches have a Doctor in attendance. Our Doctors have not/would not refuse treatment to an opposition player if it was requested by the opposition club. I do believe, however, that there is a $400 fee (SANFL imposed) if an opposition player is treated by the opposing club doctor.

I would say that all clubs have at least one very experienced trainer. I am supported by a training staff that includes 3 registered physiotherapists who also work as trainers, also a final year medical student and several other physiotherapy students of different year levels. I know that WWT have an experienced HT and also an experienced paramedic. Centrals have an experienced HT. Yes, I've had to deal with dislocated joints (shoulders and fingers) without medical support in the first half of the reserves and other medical emergencies - punctured lungs, etc.
What worries me is where the clubs will find themselves when the current crop of Head Trainer's retire? The days of SANFL clubs having training staff and Head Trainers of long service are coming to an end.

Re: Where to from here ?

See its completely different in the northern suburbs, i have worked in community centres now for 12 years and nearly every kid i speak to has heard of Centrals, in most cases it the sheer fact of the parents not willing to take, not being able to afford that stops these kids from getting to the home games.
If you walk around the Elizabeth centre for anymore than 2 hours tomorrow and i will absolutely guarantee you will at least see 5-10 people wearing some sort of centrals merchandise.

Re: Nick Murphy sacked

It would be on pretty thin ground. A waste of money.
They would argue that he was captain at the time of the alleged incident.
They would also argue that the story indicated the measures South had taken.
Was still co captain when the alleged incident happened
Irrelevent.
Yep, quite irrelevant. The story context is current / future (ie, the pending trial), however, the opening wording is not. The opening sentence / paragraph should read 'former', and the rest of the story should explain how and why, for the reader that is inclined to read further.

What he 'was' at the time of alleged conduct is beside the point - as is what further reading of the story, or any subsequent or previous media releases by South, may clarify. Likewise, what the journos or Club Murdoch may or may not "argue".

But, yeah, I think DW is right in the sense of limited value in pursuing it. Doesn't excuse it though.

... saying the SANFL is fantastic and all hail the reserves sides and that the crowd in one game on the weekend proves that it's a success.

It must be good because we are told so. Now what does that remind me of...

"It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank

only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was
to be REDUCED to twenty grammes a week. Was it possible that they could
swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it. Parsons
swallowed it easily, with the stupidity of an animal. The eyeless creature
at the other table swallowed it fanatically, passionately, with a furious
desire to track down, denounce, and vaporize anyone who should suggest that
last week the ration had been thirty grammes. Syme, too--in some more
complex way, involving doublethink, Syme swallowed it. Was he, then, ALONE
in the possession of a memory?"

Re: Who wins the flag?

When We beat South this Saturday, We'll be in the mix to win the flag, I know what you're thinking BUT, IF We win Saturday, all we have to do is beat Norwood (big deal on their current form), The Power reserves (all depends on how they stack their side), West (they only just beat Us recently) & then The Eagles, that's the tough ask. So it looks like a Central v Eagles Grand Final. :D :D

Back to the glory days of the SANFL!

If it was back to the glory days of the SANFL you guys would be looking for a 3rd club to help you out

I'd count glory days as any time you get to celebrate a premiership and it's not against your "arch rivals" reserves!

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Checking the scores is one thing, but actually attending SANFL games to see how Crows players performed is another. I can't see how checking score updates pre or post the inclusion of AFL reserves teams influences or explains the trend of less people putting their arses on an SANFL seat.

I meant that as only one form of interest. Seeing AFL players in the SANFL was/is clearly a driver of interest in the comp, along with many other more important drivers, but I was just thinking that it has also had a small effect.

The love and respect needs to go both ways. Members and supporters feel let down by their clubs. Their voices were dismissed when they raised their concerns and they are still being dismissed. Would you continue having a relationship with someone that always dismissed your opinions and concerns?

yep fair point.

serious question - do you guys feel like your opinions were ignored? Or that they were heard but dismissed?

I don't because my club voted NO. If they hadn't would I still be going to the SANFL? Not sure.

Re: Elim. Final - Norwood v Central @ Adelaide Oval (Sun 6/9

Was a very hard and tough early with both sides putting on some good pressure, although neither side could hold their heads high regarding skill and clean ball handling. Thought Norwood had the early ascendency but couldn't find a way to hurt us on the scoreboard. In the first 5 minutes Stephenson looked all at sea against Newton but somehow we held out.

Second quarter I felt like the dogs lifted their intensity further. Paul Thomas laid a series of tough tackles that stopped an opponent dead in his tracks and that seemed to lift his young team mates. This began to really push Norwood onto the backfoot while either our mids got some better hands aronud the contest or Norwood started to drop off in their intensity. Probably a bit of both really. But at half time a narrow lead felt like we were starting to wrest some control over the contest.

Third quarter was excellent. Felt like for the first time in the whole game we got some good clean ball through the middle. The run started to kick in and our small forward line looked lively. Norwood really got starved of good chances through pressure and tackling and a few times it looked like we'd pull out to a strong lead. Still, at the final break Norwood weren't put away.

The last was just a clinic. Norwood looked diabolical. Even when under no pressure they coughed it up. With free team mates to link up to they stopped. And they suddenly had virtually no endeavour in their defense. Up to then, you'd be forgiven for saying Norwood just lacked class but when the season is on the line, to fail the effort test is embarassing. That's not how a side that's won 3 in a row should end their run.

Well done to Norwood for the last 3 years. Winning any flag isn't something to be taken lightly and 3 in a row is a rare accomplishment. I think given the dominance of 2 clubs since 2000 it's easy to forget that. But serious questions need to be asked of Warren. The plan was poor. They seemed to try a game plan they simply weren't capable of carrying out while against a dogs side always likely to be small up forward they went with a rather tall defense and oddly, conceded a lot of balls over the back. The decision to seemingly let the dogs best midfielder rack up 37 touches took its toll. Schiller must have thought it was christmas the number of times nobody picked him up at the stoppages. A few older heads will leave Norwood and it seems a full rebuild is imminent.

Thought generally the umpiring was good, but there were a couple of baffling decisions. I get the idea of letting it go and for the most part the umps erred on that side. But some really obvious frees were waved on. We have rules in the game for a reason, feel free to enforce them the whole game.

And finally, whether Thommo goes on or not remains to be seen. I'd love to see him notch 300 games, which is 2 more years. Reckon he has the ability but it must be taxing to play the way he does. But the more it seems to be a feeder comp for kids, the less we're going to see stalwarts. If he doesn't get to 300, not sure how many years it'll before the next one. But good to see he's still putting some shocking shots for goal in. Of his league goals, I swear most were passes.

Re: 1st Semi Final - Power Reserves v Centrals

Have to make special mention of the charming 50ish year old Port lady who was telling every Centrals supporter that walked past that they would be lining up at Centrelink on Monday. It was a bit rich coming from a lady with bleach blonde hair, a huge tattoo on her back who still thinks she can shop at Supre instead of Joyreen. Considering she looked like she'd just walked in from Hanson Rd, I'm not sure she should have been giving anyone shit.

I think I know the one, nice flowing silky black and white dress?

Re: Preliminary Final - Centrals v West

West were on fire yesterday, they beat us at our own game and were so much cleaner when getting away from the clearances. We fumbled way too many times and our play makers like T Schiller were way down on form. Some real clangers at pivotal times allowed West to score easily. Even when we were tacking them they manage to get a kick away for a goal. It really was Wests day. My post game post was affected by way too many plastic cups of stale beer. I would love to see Westies get a premiership, their only one in 3 decades and after yesterdays effort with some quality footy, they deserve it.

Once again the Lizbeff choir was in full voice, kept me entertained and chanting away the afternoon. Westies crowd an enthusiastic bunch and why wouldn't they be. Hopefully a fair amount of neutrals make the GF.

Agree with what you have said wild dog, I only hope that we come out and play the same next Sunday!

Phil is doing his job and you can't criticise what he has done, in fact he has done a great job in thinking outside the square to engage his community/zone. Maybe a free ticket to all attendees for another game later in the season might be a way to get them back?

I don't think anyone is "criticizing" Phil H - far from it in fact. The danger is that his (and others) hard work will be spun by those with an agenda that the AFL Reserves is good for the competition and the ill informed or uncaring will lap it up.

Re: R13 - Central v Adelaide @ Elizabeth

Wild Dog - A Crows game usually brings no SANFL reserves game as a curtain raiser, each club has developed it's own plan on how to fill that hole.

Eagles have run a carnival last 3 years, Glenelg ran a schools carnival last year, West tried this year but Easter Saturday wrong date to get teams along, Central have just had theirs and Norwood are planning one later in the season. That is 5/8.

John - Until Eagles brought in 4,672 to their carnival day last year I don't thing other clubs had given the concept much thought, it is a LOT of work and quite a logistical challenge to mix a carnival and SANFL league game together. Most weeks there is a reserves game to provide the curtain raiser, playing a carnival for say a North v South game means moving the reserves to another place / date / time.

What I like most about the concept is that if you do it right, you provide a wonderful SANFL experience for kids who play local footy in your area.

Hopefully all the kids who play school footy in the Bulldogs zone now have a great experience of a day at Elizabeth.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

But if we are to have a viable competition going forward, it has to be a competition that is relevant to this town in 2016 and beyond.
Pure unadulterated bulldust.

If the competition is to be viable then it must be relevant to its core support base: the SANFL fan.

Attempting to be relevant to other parties is pointless, ably demonstrated by the relative lack of opposition support at games involving AFL clubs. There was a belief among certain SANFL directors that catering to the AFL clubs was the only thing that was going to keep the SANFL afloat. This has proven to be folly.

No, if the competition is to be viable then it needs to cater for the SANFL fan. Those who turn up to see the games, buy merchandise, patronise the clubs, educate their kids to continue the support in future generations - you know, the lifeblood of the league. So the support is not there to bring back those halycon days of the 70s and 80s - but the support might be there to bring back the SANFL of 2013. Most of us here would be happy with that.

Talked about, yes, informally and as an alternative concept in the media whenever issues arose with managing fringe players under the previous club-based system.

But Sanderson made the reserves sides happen. It was his brainchild to implement a system akin to Geelong and Collingwood who were strong at the time as soon as he was appointed in late 2011. In the the 7 and a bit seasons before him, Neil Craig had been a supporter of the club-based system (somewhat ironically, because as Norwood's coach he often played players in positions contrary to the Crows' wishes) and I'm not aware of any serious public discussion by him or the Crows on the issue, not like the following media statements by Sanderson. Happy to be corrected.

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/sando-in-sanfl-reserves-team-call/story-e6frecoc-1226228802287

COACH Brenton Sanderson has signalled his interest in the Crows having their own reserves in the SANFL.

When - and in what format - it would be introduced remains a mystery but what is clear is the former Geelong assistant's desire to control the development of his youthful playing list. "We'll just keep chipping away," Sanderson said.

"I think for the club it's certainly something on the agenda and something we would love to have.

"A reserves side is going to make us better as a football club and a football team."

Sanderson, who is fresh out of a Cats system that includes a reserves team in the VFL, has seen first-hand the benefits of having a seconds side.

Unlike his predecessor, Neil Craig, who spoke glowingly of his men playing in team-orientated environments at SANFL clubs, Sanderson is convinced shadowing the Cats and Collingwood is the way to go.

"Typically the sides which have their own players go back and get coached by coaches who are within the football club, are the ones who have the quicker improvement," Sanderson said.

"For the development of our younger kids it's imperative at some stage down the track we have a reserves side. We understand it's a delicate issue but at the same time, from my point of view as senior coach, we would love to have it.

"But we're not going to shove it down anyone's throat just yet, but we'll keep chipping away at it."

It is understood one proposal being considered is the Crows' reserves side playing whatever SANFL side has the bye, but not for premiership points. But this scenario could lend itself to the SANFL club resting senior players.

Sanderson then continued the rhetoric in mid 2013:

http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/crows-reserves-a-must-in-2014-says-adelaide-coach-brenton-sanderson/story-fndv862c-1226658133304

BRENTON Sanderson says Adelaide must field a stand-alone reserves team next year or it will risk falling further behind the AFL's power clubs.

"It's really important from my point of view as a senior coach," Sanderson said as the Crows joined hometown rival Port Adelaide in ramping up their push to field their own side in the SANFL.

"If we didn't get a reserves side up next year we would be, I think, the only team that doesn't send its players to one club. It's massive, it really is.

"I've seen the Geelong model and the Geelong program works so successfully with the development of young players getting drafted and coming through their own system.

"What's important is that if we can get our own team we can actually try and fight that battle against Collingwood, Geelong, Essendon, those sorts of teams that have had their reserves teams up and running for a number of years, which really helps their development.

"I'm not sure where we're at with the negotiation phase of it, getting it up and running, but we'll almost certainly have our own team next year."

The Power wants its SANFL affiliate, the Port Magpies, to be its reserves side from next year.

Sanderson said he'd like his players who aren't playing in the AFL each week to play in one team in the SANFL's league competition.

But he said the main priority is just getting them to play together, even if it is in the reserves. Other options are the VFL and NEAFL competitions, which host Victorian and Sydney and Brisbane clubs respectively.

While Sanderson said he wanted his non-selected players challenged in the strongest competition available, getting the team up and running was the priority.

"We'd want our own team playing in the strongest competition available but ultimately we want our own team first of all," he said.

"But coming up against Sydney this week, the young kid (Tom) Mitchell, who played really well for them last week, in his previous two games he had 56 and 52 possessions playing in the NEAFL.

"So that's also the debate - where are players going to learn and develop the most? But primarily, let's get our own second team first."

Under the current system, the Crows lose some control over their non-selected AFL players, who must line up for their SANFL clubs and often play different positions and learn different game styles.

"Obviously Port has got a fair bit of control over its players at the Port Magpies and ultimately that's what we'd like," Sanderson said.

"Apart from development it helps with the retention because our players can play together rather than go and play for the nine SANFL teams.

"It would be nice to be able to tell them when we draft them they will always play for the Crows."

Sanderson said the "wheels are certainly in motion for us to get a second team up and running".

"We're a long way down the path," he said.

"Phil Harper (football operations manager) and David Noble (list manager) are working hard behind the scenes."

Re: Centrals V Adelaide Saturday September 3 12:10

I'm not sure what I want to say on here.
I posted extensively on FB last night.
It's really disappointing to see what happened yesterday.

The end to enders were there, I sat with them in the last quarter.
Along with Cennals05, who it's always good to see.

Where were the Crows fans?
Probably at the Show, buying their Adelaide Crows showbag. And who can blame them? No one watches reserves sides. No one.

I've pretty much given up on whatever this debate is. I probably won't be able to help myself, I'm sure, but at this point...
But it was disheartening yesterday. We were playing SANFL football, Adelaide played SANFL football 1.5.
I've never seen so many 3 on 1 contests at an SANFL game. They were everywhere. We were nowhere - couldn't keep up.

The real disheartening thing was getting abused by a man, wearing the regalia of an SANFL team, at the end of the game because I dared to stand above the Adelaide players' race at the conclusion of the game (saying nothing - scarf raised above my head).
The bloke vehemently and continuously abused me (while his wife looked at me, shaking her head at the Centrals heathen, seemingly not unhappy wih her husband's behaviour) and, when I looked his way, he suggested we should go out the back for a fight.
The security bloke who was watching over me was bemused - "what's he on about?".
Even those who profess to support the eight clubs are at odds with each other on what this means. That's disheartening. Not only that a bloke who supports a club that is rich in heritage and over 100 years old will abuse a fellow SANFL supporter for making a silent statement, but that he doesn't understand what this situation means to his club.
It's bloody sad.

I'm not done, but I see others walking away and I'm bloody sad about it because I don't know what all of this means for the SANFL, but in particular the future direction of my club.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Roy Laird bit fined by the SANFL. Out of tune wankers, they should be rewarding him for speaking the truth and trying to open their eyes to something that is wrong! Let's find out how much the fine was and start a crowd funding campaign for Roy.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

JTC. To add to your point, what does Port actually give back to the SANFL. They pay no fees to SANFL clubs, play matches at Alberton, discourage their supporters from travelling to away games ala the South game at Noarlunga. At least the old Magpies added to player development.
That just reinforces my argument that the powers that be (no pun intended) at the SANFL are incompetent and not capable of running the league.
Personally, I'm not interested in any of the rumours that might be put out there, lining their own pockets, setting themselves up for an AFL number, etc, as they are all irrelevant to the main fact.
What is relevant to me though is their inability to say No, or if they genuinely believed having AFL Reserves in was better for the league, is their inability to broker a decent deal for their SANFL clubs that meant both AFL clubs played to the same set of rules. And their failure to see the true value of the SANFL League to the AFL clubs.

If they had it would have meant $150k p.a. to each SANFL club from each AFL club.
Allowing the SANFL clubs to use the fees on players by increasing the salary cap to $650k, which would help stop the drain of quality players to the ammos
No home games and no Reserves Reserves for Port
Adelaide and Port to fund any shortfall in sponsorship revenue for the TV deal and each club to have the same number of appearances as the two Reserves.
I'm sure there would be many other proviso's

And that those same people who were devoid of any ideas when "negotiating" the deal, are also devoid of any ideas now. Even if they voted to kick the AFL Reserves out right now, they simply have no ideas. The league would flounder because there just isn't anyone at the SANFL driving it forward. There is no one there that I'd have the least bit of confidence in to run any of my businesses let along something as important as the SANFL.

The pro AFLites would say "we told you so", completely missing the point that the only reason it failed was because of the incompetents running it.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

The crows have said they don't want to fork out $500k to play in a AFL reserves comp

But they shell out 400k to play in the SANFL each year?

Easy fix: ramp up the price to 1m, and charge the same to the smears. They don't pay, We don't play.

Watch them both trip over each other as they race across the border to the VFL.

Re: 2018 Broadcast Coverage

Everyone moaned like f$¥k about RPH and to some extent about Life FM.
Crap game callers, crap quality, high diddle diddle, Smithfield crash clangers and the wild man of Borneo, DB and his sausage rolls and guess the name of the player with the ball.

Sure do miss them though warts and all. At least they had a connection to the everyday fan. They were calling what was happening here and now (well for me about 12 seconds behind the now) but if you were out and about or were at another game, or just listening in the garden shed, they brought the SANFL alive and into whatever you were doing. It was real and you could relate to it.

The digital pass doesn’t have that connection for me. Not just because of my crap internet but mainly because it is a catch up type of thing. It’s like match of the day or a replay of the Melbourne Cup on the 10 o’clock News. Even if you don’t know the winner, the kudos just isn’t there.

When North was on the Radio I had a routine. Up at 5:00am, on a Sunday more often than not, write out today’s teams in their likely positions and research the opposition to guess who would likely match up on who. You had to visualise where the ball was during the game, you got to know the opposition as well as you own fringe players, the youngsters given a chance at league level, players coming back from injury an so on.

It was a real connection between the fan and the league. It was live and it was now. Even when your team was losing, you still listened in, in case they made the miracle come back, like North did against Sturt and the Eagles in 2007.

Now I don’t bother getting up at 5:00am anymore. I can watch a scattered Digital Pass game anytime I want, should I have the time and the inclination. I don’t connect with fellow Roosters from around the globe or fans from other clubs like Jimmy, TRB, Jane, Loyalist and many others who all had the same common connection. I don’t connect with the Aussie Roosters who weren’t at the game for whatever reason. I don’t connect with them because they aren’t there anymore. The one thing that brought fans together on this forum and, for me, on the Roost was the Radio. Game day live.

I know there are many other factors that have impacted on the average SANFL fan, but the loss of live Radio coverage and the great job both Life and RPH did in bringing games to the fans, has had a much deeper effect on the fans and their connection to their club and the league as a whole than the powers that be could ever realise.

Re: INS and OUTS for 2018

"Proven performer" was more intended in relation to his ability. If he has issues but they're no longer going to impact on your club, then I'd have thought you'd be happy at him becoming someone else's problem?

I'm trying to keep out of this conversation.

However, the one thing I will say is that the annoyance stems from disappointment at the opportunities afforded to Josh. It also stems from the fact that many of us wish we had half the talent he does and the opportunities he's had.
Football can give you so much if you choose to embrace it. To paraphrase - a beautiful talent is a shame to waste.

Re: 2019 SANFL Season

I still think an extra bonus point for teams that can score over 100 points is the way to go.

Don’t change the rules just change the reward system and let the coaches work out the issue of their teams lack of scoring problem.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

The AFL in SA is going to have a real issue to get back to where it was after we return to normal business and citizen conditions. Besides the crows grand final year, attendance has declined each year since the 2014 Adelaide Oval development. Power similar, although crowds tanked in 2016 but recovered an average 2000 in 18 and 19 but still well below 2014. So the honeymoon period is over and the only way to make more money was to price gouge food and drink for the poor sods who attend the games.

As for the current pandemic, Dangerfields representation of the players demands is a bloody bad look no matter the context, and it will take a long time for the pubic to forget. North Melbourne players having the police called out due to noise complaints after they celebrate their win during a period of real heightened public anguish (or panic) is another incident that will take a while to forget. Articles such as this are appearing https://www.smh.com.au/sport/sport-can-be-truly-enriching-and-rewarding-again-just-not-with-money-20200326-p54ect.html (Cue Ben Hook on 891 Drive making similar observations) and it is not hard to imagine there will be a good couple of years of genuine economic hardship where there will be an expectation that professional sportsmen play for a pittance of current salaries. Will the general population look at high paid sports people in the same way. I hope not, surely after an event such as this we will realise that the most important thing we have has been staring us in the face the whole time, COMMUNITY. AFL teams, particularly in SA do not represent our community.

SANFL needs to market its product as "Lets get back to basics and support your community, SANFL clubs = Community." They need to show the lads who are studying, tradesmen, labourers etc and then show them playing. Professional sports needs to be shown for what it is, shallow commercialisation of a game that we all love. Sure it produces a spectacle, but is also produces a guy like Dangerfield who represents a body of players that will try and screw the sport for as much as possible.

It really depends on how long this virus is around, how long and deep economic hardship is, and how quickly the AFL try to return as closely as possible to the glory days. Whilst I would love to see the game played for the sake of the game again, around packed suburban ovals, that really is schadenfreude.

Misrepresent that comment as much as you like, I take no pleasure in the current situation and will derive no satisfaction in any organisation suffering. My club has closed its doors and after years of hard fought gains it is now going to be a close thing to survive. What I would like to see is a return to community values as opposed to the selfishness currently being displayed by the AFL players association.

My comment about schadenfreude I was trying to direct at myself. I apologise if it came over as me having a go at you.
