Re: Freedom of speech? ... Or a serial pest?

Religion can be handled civilly.
I have a close friend who is a practising Christian, and while we were discussing some social/philosophical issues over coffee the other day he kept stopping to put it into non-religious terms. I appreciated his making the effort to do that, and took the pressure off him by suggesting he could use the religious terms and I'd interpret them more broadly for myself. That made it easier for both of us.

I think a good 80% of religious people are like this. At the same time, I think around the same number of non-believers can understand and accept that others have their own beliefs.

I was primarily brought up in Christian schools, and my lack of beliefs only became a problem when i got to high school. I believe I was treated differently to the others, and the judgemental nature of a lot of the staff and students at this school made me never want to put someone in my position.

My personal opinion is that I think everyone has a right to believe in someone or something, as long as they're respectful of those around them and not hurting others by doing so. I think the Adelaide Street Church violates these two principles, and are essentially (at a stretch, too) a milder, tamer, less organised version of the Westboro Baptist Church.

The latter have basically taken all the readings from The Bible , twisted the meanings and turned them into a hateful, corrupt and evil version of their 'truth'. They even ******* picket soldiers' funerals. Say what you want about America's involvement in foreign wars, but these soldiers go to war in the belief that they're doing so to protect the country they love. It's at this stage where I believe there should be a tangible limit to free speech in the sense that it should not be used to incite intolerance, hatred, fear and prejudice against any class, sexual orientation, race and belief systems. Groups like the Westboro Baptist Church and the Adelaide Street Church are clearly abusing their fundamental right to free speech.

Why can't we all learn to accept one another's beliefs, if they aren't hurting anyone?

Re: 2014 DT/SC Discussion

I've just created an AFL Fantasy league, which nobody seems to want to join...

If you want to join a league for shits and giggles, search for 'Clean Snap Football Association' on the AFL Fantasy page.

Your league is a failed creation. Come and join the Hogg! We need more Divvy VI coaches and that will be a bit of a shit and giggle league as well.

regards,

REB

*BUMP*

If anyone is still interested, there's still plenty of spots left in the Clean Snap Football Association. The league code is Z5PEYPV4 if you want to check it out.

BTW, I joined Hogg Division VI tonight too.

of course it isnt as good as any other form of cricket, but its still cricket.

Re: Things that you rate!

I rate the owner and staff at Gawler Green Seafood. Yesterday was their opening day, and I went there less than an hour after.

I was there to buy some oysters and mussels, when I heard a crash from above me. The ceiling panels and steel beams came crashing onto me, and the air conditioning unit was exposed and heavily tilted. Thank **** that didn't come out...

The staff there were genuinely concerned for my wellbeing, even though I had to reassure them I was fine, and only had a couple of scratches. Needless to say, they closed the store immediately. I also had to give my details to centre management, but I assured the staff that I wouldn't be taking any action, as I had suffered no real injury.

I went back to make sure they were all okay, and the owner hands me a dozen oysters! I told him it wasn't necessary, but he insisted.

The gist of this post is that these guys are awesome, and you guys should check them out. The staff there are really friendly, and the quality of their stock is pretty sweet too.

It's not their fault for what happened to the ceiling, as I'm sure they had nothing to do with it, but ******* sack the bastards who built it...

Re: Things that give you the sh1ts

I got a bit pissed off at a beggar at the servo this morning.

i rocked up, and got out of the car, to be 'greeted' by this dickhead, who was asking for spare change to 'get some petrol'. I rummaged through my wallet, and gave him what had to be at least $1.50, as I don't often carry cash on me.

I said to him "I hope that helps you out", and he replied "Not really, I was looking for a little bit more".

That set me off.

Me: "That's pretty ******* ungrateful, I didn't have to give you anything. I may as well have my money back".

Him: "You can't do that, I need it for petrol"

Me: "I can if I want, because I'd rather it go to someone who appreciates it, not some prick who whinges that I didn't give him as much as he wanted."

Him: "You're a ****."

Me: "I might be a ****, but at least I'm not at a servo begging for change for imaginary petrol".

I then went inside the store, and came out with a pack of smokes, two bottles of Cokes, and $140 in $20 notes, which I pretended to count as I walked past him to get to the car.

The moral of the story is that if you are grateful for little things that come your way, you might just have someone be willing to do a little extra for you.

This prick's loss, I guess...

I can't stand Bruce McAvaney, because he gets so excited over mundane little things that happen on-field, and describing his pet player as 'delicious' is sublimely cringeworthy.

F**kwits on the road that as soon as it rains think the speed limit drops to 30km an hour! Here's some advice if you don't like driving in the rain stay of the F**king road you F**king brain dead F**king idiots!

BUMP

This again!

Same goes for f**kheads tailgating and swerving through traffic when its raining. I have been known to say I hope they flip their car into a ditch so I can pull them out and tell them they got what they deserved.

What about idiots who have no idea how to merge?

The idea of merging is to MERGE with the traffic, not slow to a crawl and wait for an opening. To successfully merge, one must reach the same speed as the traffic, and enter once an appropriate gap in the traffic appears. That's why merge lanes are longer!

I swear people are ******* moronic sometimes...

Re: What Are You Listening To Now?

Only Snakes and Arrows and Roll the Bones. Don't mind the latter, especially the first half of it. Will have to look into some of their earlier albums.

If only I could make you a mixed CD. Do you have Spotify on your PC?

Yeah have Spotify. What are 2 or 3 albums you'd suggest?

2 or 3 albums? Dude, that's a really tough call.

How about I suggest you listen to these songs?

'Working Man' - from Rush
'A Passage to Bangkok' - from 2112
'Bastille Day' - from Caress of Steel
'Caravan' - from Clockwork Angels
'Headlong Flight' - from Clockwork Angels
'Animate' - from Counterparts
'Stick It Out' - from Counterparts
'Nobody's Hero' - from Counterparts
'Closer To The Heart' - from A Farewell To Kings
'Best I Can' - from Fly By Night
'Red Sector A' - from Grace Under Pressure
'Kid Gloves' - from Grace Under Pressure
'La Villa Strangiato' - from Hemispheres
'Time Stand Still' from Hold Your Fire
'Tom Sawyer' - from Moving Pictures
'Limelight' - from Moving Pictures
'YYZ' - from Moving Pictures
'Entre Nous' - from Permanent Waves : My favourite Rush song. I even have some of the lyrics tattooed on me.
'Freewill' - from Permanent Waves
'The Spirit of Radio' - from Permanent Waves
'Territories' - from Power Windows
'Presto' - from Presto
'Superconductor' - from Presto
'Subdivisions' - from Signals
'Driven' - from Test For Echo
'Virtuality' - from Test For Echo
'One Little Victory' - from Vapor Trails
'The Seeker' - from Feedback

I'm a bit of a Rush nerd, as you can probably tell now...

Re: Used to like it but don't care if I never heard it again

Cold Chisel's Khe Sanh . Surely one of the most overrated songs ever. It was great the first time you heard it in a country pub, but it started to shit me soon after that.

Blur's Song 2 . As a 14 year old boy, I was really getting into them. I then discovered Blur's back catalogue and this song wouldn't be in the top 50.

Oasis' Wonderwall . For the same reason as Song 2 . Champagne Supernova is way better, as is Whatever .

Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit . Again, for the same reason as listed above. Nirvana have way better songs, but none of them made the impact that Teen Spirit did.

There's tons more...
