Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Its not a critisim of Port,

like I said I believe it was a very disappointing crowd as I believe any time you have two of the biggest supported clubs in the league playing for top spot they should be able to attract 3k especially in absolute perfect weather, even with it being mothers day.

I would say the South v Norwood crowd was probably the most impressive crowd of the week considering Souths supporter base and the fact Norwood are really struggling.

The other games crowds are an absolute disgrace and almost panic stations for the SANFL.

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

So all of the above is just because of the afl reserves teams?

Still using the reserves teams as the source of all ills

No
The AFL B graders in the comp, is just about the last straw for me though

Yep which a lot of the pro AFL reserves fans don't understand.

While it may not be the sole reason a lot of people have turned away for a lot of people including myself and my mates it was the final nail in the coffin to suggest that the SANFL will bendover the every AFL request and that the SANFL has no future in doing so.

By 2020 the SANFL will be an under 23 feeder comp. Where mid season AFL drafts will be the players main priority and winning the SANFL will be a clubs second priority behind how many kids they can get drafted into the AFL.

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

$14 is quite a lot to go to the SANFL. especially now that you can take a family of 4 to stand on the hill at adelaide oval for $50 (for the Crows Gold Coast game at least)

$10 seems to be about the price point imo.

100% agree

I think the SANFL needs to trial dropping the prices dramatically and seeing if the money is made up from the extra attendance spending money in the ground and using clubroom facilities

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

There is so much done to equalise sporting competitions throughout the world (drug testing, salary cap, drafts, handicaps) and what has happened to the SANFL is going the polar opposite to this. No matter which way you look at it, the introduction of two AFL Reserves teams is not fair.

There are positives and negatives and those who see a fair, even competition, as the number one consideration are rightly bemused by what has happened.

From an AFL viewpoint, the consideration of an even, fair competition is outweighed by the need for developing players and for them, currently at least, the best option is to do this in their own backyard both in terms of value for money and strength of competition. They will tell themselves that there is increased exposure to the SANFL. Dittmar said it's been great, then when asked if he'd been to an SANFL game this season, said "no, but have enjoyed watching some games on tv, especially the Clare game".

I am not convinced that the increased exposure to the SANFL via commercial TV is even close to benefiting my club enough to outweigh the negatives that come with the new format. There is no more coverage of my SANFL club than there was before. In fact, I would say there is less. I guess we'd have to wait to see the finances from this years Annual Reports to really know.

There are other ways, including having a weekly SANFL game at Adelaide Oval, that would give the competition prestige and generate interest. The use of social media and the web is more important than paying $1,000,000 to have the game shown on Ch7 - which is essentially the only benefit the AFL clubs have bought (via sponsorship) to the competition.

The Eagles vs Sturt game at Unley Oval, with a crowd of 4000, which was directly up against both Crows and Power games on the same day told me that there is enough interest in the SANFL for it to be viable without the "assistance" of AFL clubs.

What is desperately needed is the SANFL administration to apply the spirit in which 5RPH and LifeFM have to the competition to generate interest and use the capital they should have to make it high quality for the current HD generation.

I think the SANFL would be best to cut ties with Port and the Crows at the end of the season. If Port Magpies win the SANFL premiership this year, it will be an absolute disgrace.

There are other ways to keep relevance for a younger generation of footballers and an alignment between the AFL and SANFL and that is to supply Port and Crows with top up players via Under 20's to use in whatever competition they could go to (preferably AFL Reserves or at least VFL). I believe this could apply nationally with alignment of elite Under 18 sides to all AFL and State League clubs, but that is another matter. Keep Junior Football, Development/Reserves Football and State League Football - which can all still be feeders to the AFL - separate.

For now, I reckon the SANFL bite the bullet and go it alone. The mainstream media, who all seem to be official ambassadors for the Crows (http://www.afc.com.au/the-club/information/ambassadors), will give the SANFL hell, but I'm not convinced it is the mainstream media who will ensure the SANFL survives and prospers anyway.

The SANFL will never be the number one show in town, but it has a niche, and I'd love to see the SANFL and its clubs make every post a winner NOW, while there is still strong enough links to SANFL clubs for the majority of families in South Australia.

WOW one of the best posts this site has seen and sums up my view of the current landscape 110%

Re: Round the world trip

The intinary has changed a little

It's now

LA- 3 days
NYC- 6 days
Lon- 4 days
Bruges- 2 days
Paris- 2 days
Barcelona- 3 days
Madrid-3 days
Rome-3 days

Ill be interested to see how the misses copes with the travel and energy levels.

Personally I should be fine, I work 11.5 hour days. 1 hour of gym 5 times a week and roughly run of 6 hours sleep real well , the misses on the other hand lol

At the end of the day I can't complain as I'm getting a European holiday completely free all expenses including spending money paid for.

What I will learn from this trip will be invaluable as in a fair few years both my girls will turn 18 and 21 in the same year, which we have been saving to do a 6 month complete world trip for. So hopefully lessons will be learnt

Re: Round 9 - Port v Central (Alberton) - Sun 8/6

Good to see Wagner's already got his own face book page to like with such a big impact on the competition so far.
I'm tipping Johann to kick at least 50 goals and the Dogs to get up by 60 goals, anything less will be a big disappointment after the lead up to Wagner's debut.

Im wont make it today as stuck working at the Aquadome.

But i did notice across the road that the police escort to Alberton for Johann had just left.

At first glimpse it appeared there were more spectators there today than for the royal visit a couple of months ago.

I also heard tomorrows Public Holiday is actually to honour Johann Wagners SANFL debut.

Kennedy and Rogic with big injury concerns, not worth the risk. Not sure about Wilkshere

Re: Crows 2014

Feel dirty sticking up for the Crows, but it's worth remembering they are paying good, not great, money for Betts. So they know he's not elite, and knew what they were getting. I think for all his faults (and they've been accurately mentioned here). he would receive a pass mark from what Ive seen of him/them this season.

Your probably right but the Betts signing to me reminds me of many of the teams that get stuck in the middle of the road and never get out with poor recruiting

I don't see great benefit in an average side signing an older bloke on a higher than average deal.

imho they should have taken the same path as the power and had some faith in the youth.

Re: The 2014 season no AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

"CHEATING" (Using capitals helps when getting your point across) would be playing outside of the rules governing the competition.
Cheating isn't the right word but essentially his point is the same.

There are two AFL reserve sides splaying in the SANFL and they do have certain advantages over the real SANFL clubs. And there are 3 different criteria bring used in the same comp which has given one reserve side a much bigger advantage than the remaining 9 teams including the other reserve side.

I think the current ladder supports this and I suspect most fans know this , including what must be some very happy PAFC supporters. But whilst many PAFC supporters might be happy with the current set up, do you honestly believe having 3 different criteria giving one reserve team a significant advantage over the rest of the competition is good for the long term viability of the SANFL.

As for the PAM debate, personally I couldn't give a rats arse what you want to call them. The team competing in the SANFL is an AFL reserve side and not the true independent Port Adelaide of old. Just don't insult me by trying to purvey them as the genuine article they were.

Going forward, I think the 2 reserve sides are here to stay for the foreseeable future. I don't think the AFL see a national reserves comp viable as they would either still have to rely on state leagues for top up players or increase club numbers which isn't going to work.
The alternatives for both AFL and SANFL is to either a) kick the two reserve teams out of the SANFL altogether, whence you would assume they would have to go to the ammo's, b) offer them places in the SANFL reserve league, something neither AFL club wants, or c) leave them where they are but level the playing field so at least both of the AFL reserve sides are playing under the same criteria.

Then don't insult us by telling us what our club is, was and will be.

It's our club, a club that belongs to the people who support it financially and emotionally and not whats written in the bowels of some corporate bullshit statement, and to keep being told by people who figure Google is the best way to find the answers to what our club is, was, stands for and how we should see ourselves is downright insulting.

Whinge about the state of the SANFL, cry about anything you like but quit telling us who we are, or at least who you think we are.

Come on mate, in fairness your club couldn't even work out its own identity.

Remember the whole 'we are the Port Magpies' or are we 'the alternative to the Crows', we don't want to be associated with the old Magpies because it effects our future supporter base bla bla bla

If your club couldn't even work out its own identity then I think its fair the general public discuss it and don't take your clubs latest claim of being one club as serious

Re: World Cup - Brazil 2014

Too many are rationalising it, we were better 8 years ago!

The way I look at it

2006- where I want to be, I think Australia should be getting to the round of 16 more times than not, it was the best australian side we have ever had

2010- one really poor game cost us a round of 16 spot, imho that team under performed

2014- very young squad didnt qualify very well which put them in an extremly tough group, for a young side they have performed above themselves imho, which as a soccer diehard is all I can ask for. They way we have performed we probably would have got to R16 in about 4 of the other groups.

2018- this current squad has to stick together, we need to qualify as the top seed and get a group we can get out of. Round of 16 is a must at next world cup

People that expect us to be soccer powerhouse are kidding themselves. We are a tiny population and even then half our kids growing up couldn't care less for the round ball. We are probably one of the handful of countries in the world where soccer would rate as its 4-5 most popular sport

Re: World Cup - Brazil 2014

Now it's cause it's only cause they were in the hardest group. FFS

World champs my ass they were bottom of the group and Australia were totally out played lost 2-0 end of story

Sorry Carey, unfair call. Spain is an amazing side and had played two shockers, they had two much class to play 3 bad games in a row. (much like in the AFL would you like to be facing Hawthorn coming off two poor performances i would think so.

At the end of the day the Spain side has so much quality and in reality they could put a 3rd-4th string side on the park and player for player they would still have more quality.

The way we performed at this World Cup was better than at 2010 (which imho was a group we should have qualified out of with the talent we had)

This is what i see as the Positives and Negatives from the World Cup

POSITIVES
-Young Side will only get better with experience
- We actually looked to play the game and didnt park the bus for 90mins a game
-Our best is good enough we just need to be able to sustain our best
-Our centre back pairing
-Bozanic
-We had 2-3 players out from our best starting 11 imho (Kruse, Williams, Rogic)

NEGATIVES
-Still to reliant on Cahill
-When we lapse we are mediocre
-To many of our players have massives gaps between their best and worse (both skills and work rate)
-We are playing a style reliant on the wide players, Leckie and Oar are probably our two most inconsistent players

Anderson out with one ball to go to give Sri Lanka the series win.

Cried like a bitch when he was given the man of the series award.

Love it!

It seems that cautious Cook was at it again. Giving Angelo Matthews the singles to keep Herath on strike. Meanwhile Matthews scores runs and eventually so does Herath as he gains confidence. Then both batsmen are scoring runs. Sounds familiar.

In the first Test Cook batted too long and they missed out by one wicket and copped a draw.

Good Captaincy, England 2-0. Captain Cook, Sri Lanka 1-0. They need to discover another one.

regards,

REB

Your probably right about his captaincy but I would think in modern cricket Cook's voice in deciding the exact point of declaring would be very limited.

I reckon the head coach, bowling coach and some stupid sport scientist would be influencing the deciscion based on when the bowlers will be ready.

Reading Clarkes diary he makes comment that alot of them deciscions now are a 'coaching team' deciscion rather than captains choice
