The Woodville Crows

Postby Sojourner » Sun Jan 28, 2007 11:20 am

For all of the readers of the Sunday Mail, I am tipping you may have read Chris McDermott's thoughts on the Demerging of Woodville West Torrens.

For the uninitiated, his idea is that Torrens revert to being the old West Torrens club and relocate to Thebarton Oval, yet the spin on his idea is that he would like to see the old Woodville Woodpeckers reformed but switch from being the Peckers to the Crows and as a result have the Crows reserves all playing for Woodville and have the whole thing admistrated out of Woodville oval. It is also suggested that the Power players would play only for the Magpies.

One point that I found interesting was his suggestion that if this was done the attendances at games where the Woodville Crows were playing would be likely to be 5000+ and that this move could revive the SANFL? I had not considered that idea before and maybe there is something in it?

What would worry me though is if they won every week! There reserves are going to be the best of the SANFL players and from other competitions, sure they will have some that they are working with, yet the team is going to be a fairly strong unit, and if it resulted in them winning the premiership over the other sides on a regular basis that could have quite a negative impact on the SANFL competition.

Curiously, I reakon McDermott followed the peckers when he was a kid.

In the article he suggests that the act of aligning all AFL players with one team works just fine in the VFL. So it might, when there are 10 AFL clubs feeding players back into the league. That ain't the case here. Nor is it the case in Perth, where the "host club" arrangement has been tried more than once, and disbanded fairly quickly each time.

Two things are possible: Either McDermott is simply trying to stir the pot and boost his own readership, or REB's assessment of the guy was right.

McGuinness followed Woodville as a kid. McDermott too now? No wonder Ralphy made such a big splash (in the ashtrays at least) at the Bay.

Hmmmmmmm !!!

I would like the SANFL to get rid of the dreaded bye - but this is not the way to do it !!!

Like previously posted the WAFL tried the concept and got rid of it quicker than a speeding bullet.

I'm a loyal Port Magpies man (don't give a toss about AFL footy), but I think McDermott's idea is the biggest load of tripe since AFL footy became family friendly.

Port Power/Magpies (whatever they'd call themselves) and the Woodville Cows would effectively have a duopoly on the SANFL, to the stage where it would no longer be a state competition. Random VIC, WA, QLD import kids would comprise their own teams? Personally, let's get rid of the bye and get an NT team in the comp. There's little difference.

Sure, alignment works in the VFL because it benefits everyone, but over here it would be a disaster.

The heart of this matter is that McDermott no longer wants a bye. Simple as that. I agree, I detest the bye, but his Martian theory surely must've come from a daydream about the glory days of the SANFL.

I just get the feeling that Chris McDermott is shooting at the walls of heartache, bang bang. He's not the Warriors fan. He's not the Warriors fan.

Woodville Crows never will happen and nor should it .
However I would like to see all Port Magpies players recruited by the Crows allocated to other SANFL clubs and in return all Port Powers interstate recruits alloctated to Port Magpies.
