Mini League - Policy on the run!
01/02/2007
Whenever there is a popular decision to be made there is never a shortage of people or organisations putting their hands up for credit. The emotive issue of whether the SANFL was to continue conducting Mini league at half time during games provoked comment from many sources including politicians, past participants, parents and the media. It is important to note that the concept of allowing children on the oval to participate in a Mini League competition was never the issue.
The original decision not to continue the activity was based on the loss of a sponsorship and the Clubs' desire to free up the Oval for all patrons to access the ground to have a "kick of the footy" - previously only available at quarter and three quarter times. The public statements attributed to some Clubs since the original decision would indicate a change of heart in policy, or at best a reaction to criticism.
The outcome is now public, the Mini League will continue with sponsorship coming from the Government. It is a positive result for all the children who get to play and hopefully identify with their League Club. Let's hope that all the people who were passionate in their support of Mini League are just as committed to attending SANFL matches.
