WAFL and the SANFL

Postby Sojourner » Tue Feb 06, 2007 9:42 pm

There has been some discussion over in Perth on the idea of renaming their competition AFLWA to gain more sponsorship and exposure. It seems that several things have been tried to reinvigorate their competition to no avail.

What is it about the SANFL that makes it so much more popular in S.A than the WAFL is in W.A?

One interesting point on sport in WA is that it is a state where Speedway in summer is hugely popular, massive crowds to Speedway on a Fri-Sat night, yet here, Riverview Speedway at Murray Bridge is popular yet the main track at Virginia is a ghost town. If they can get huge crowds for Speedway, why not for the footy?

Interesting isnt it. Without giving it a lot of thought when the eagles came in the wafl had no port adelaide to bolster as the sanfl did when the crows came in. Im sure il think of others as this is only a minor reason. Is an extra couple of thousand more people a week that significant a difference? Im not sure?

What are the WA amateur/country leagues like in terms of strength - playing and financial?
Do eagles/dockers games get programmed in direct competition with wafl games?
WA also has a big expat population and a lot of 'nomadic' people who have houses in Perth but work in mining areas for example and commute.

A 2pm start in Melbourne is a 12.30pm start and a 3.00pm finish in Perth - does this have a bigger effect than a 1.30/4.40 span of match time in Adelaide? (What time do wafl games start at?).

There are many problems in the WAFL some of which go back to 1987 when they joined the VFL far too early instead of working with the SANFL so all the non-victorian clubs could have got a better deal.
Other problems have been Dr Neale Fong.
Bringing Peel Thunder into the competition which has diluted the playing standard of the WAFL.They would have been far better off relocating either Perth or East Perth down to Mandurah.
The WAFL also had no TV coverage for a few seasons.
The WAFL clubs don't any gaming venues and they also don't receive any direct dividends from the 2 AFL clubs.
Lack of crowd interest is also due to the uneveness of the competition.Subiaco received a big lot of money to leave Subiaco Oval and to relocate to Leederville.South Fremantle received a big cash injection from the Dockers whom have all their training facilities at South Freo's ground while the rest have got bugger all.
There are more problems to numerous to mention and some have already been mentioned by other posters. However the 2 things the WAFL does better than the SANFL is their Football Budget is far superior to that of the SANFL.The WAFL also produces an excellent media guide every season.
