Yep....it was good in its day, however society has changed and we need a new multipurpose stadium close to the city and public transport. Look at all the great cities in the world...they all have their sporting venues within easy reach

The SANFL would likely say that they have too much invested in Football Park and as a result to change would result in too heavier loss for it to be worthwhile.

I agree that Footy Park needs some more work done to bring it up in its quality level, the things that I see as the most urgent is the completion of the terracing of the second tier of the grandstand, and increasing the number of female toilets by digging an underground terrace under the stadium to get the crowds down from milling around near the entrances to the stands.

From the State Governments perspective, they have to do their bit too and connect Football Park to the rail network, if it helps make it work, send the train to a terminus in West Lakes Mall, just make a stop at Football Park!

The redevelopment of the MCG stands (50 000) for half an oval cost $434 Million....

To build a 50-60 000 seat stadium in the Adelaide city area would cost over 1/2 a Billion once you factor in land clearing, preparation and legal lees (to fight the anti-development pro-parklands faction)

It wont happen as to be viable it would have to be a year round stadium so international cricket would have to be played their and we all know how much teh SACA and the SANFL love each other...

Cheaper to put in a rail spur or tramline up Port rd with a line into footy park and politically more expediant as it will benefit more people (i.e. the morons that don't like footy and live in the Western Suburbs)

Glenelg have more chane of winning the flag this year than a footy stadium being built in the Adelaide city area.

I never understood why this part of the plan was never completed. It's really the only thing lacking in regards to getting to the ground. Location isn't a problem, it's the transport infrastructure around the place.

Perhaps the league could hit the government up with two options, help pay for a new stadium or a spur line.

I'm really not a fan of selling off Footy Park for a new stadium. The league did the hard yards in establishing it and now there's a superb asset thats generating income for the league with the two AFL clubs there. All it needs is improvement in the standard of facilities around the ground (toilets, catering etc) as it's probably one of the worst places in the country for these things.

well it was done in Melbourne with Waverley/Telstra Dome so why not...Imagine the land value that SANFL is sitting on down there?

Cricket would remain at Adelaide Oval however Adelaide United with organic growth will need a bigger stadium than Hindmarsh in the future so there is a summer tennant not to mention the extra events this would attract (Wallabies, Socceroos, NRL, Super 14's, concerts - events that are not suitable at Footy Park or Adelaide Oval)

The government have a responsibility to provide us with a adequate easy to access stadium that brings so many of its tax payers to and creates emplyment and economic benefit....it all makes sense but here is SA we are not known for taking a risk

Great point Dutchy...Would be great for something close to the city...how many housing blocks would fit at the Footy Park sight...PRIME real estate.

But remember this is Adelaide, the city that built a one way expressway (always goin the wrong way too!), and the wowsers knocked back a grandstand in Vic Pk etc etc..makes ya wanna scream..

tassie, for a development of this type and scale and the history of such proposals in this state I seriously doubt that we would get change out of 1 billion. by the time a site is found surrounding land holders are compensated (and what a fight that would be ) then construction could begin, factor in some stuff ups (ie multiplex) and hey presto we have a stadium that costs a mint.

United are likely to out grow Hindmarsh in the future and there is no room for expansion there, soon enough the current stands at Footy park will be nearing the end of their useful life and will need a total re-build. The most Ideal place that I can think of at the moment for a totally new stadium would be the current site of the Athletics track, Athletics officials are squealing that there arena is worn out, there is already a bit of space to work with and near enough to the city why not design something that could incorporate all of them or footy moves to Mile end and Athletics moves to West Lakes.
