In Richard Williams case it's got beyond that.

Obviously his disgraceful effort last week saw him demoted to the u/17's. I think if the earlier allegation is true, then the SANFL have to suspend him, or possibly even sack him. He is becoming an increasing menace to the game, and the SANFL will be better off without him.

With out exception, all umpires go back to the 17's or 19's a couple of times a year, it doesn't appear anything out of the ordinary at all.

In my opinion, Williams hasn't done 20 AFL, 350+ SANFL matches and 9 Grand Finals for nothing. He only gets noticed more because he's Richard Williams - everyone knows him.

Where did you hear that Ian? Not doubting you but in my four years of working with the Glenelg juniors I only ever saw 1 league umpire do a game (apart form finals) and that was Jack Hylton coming back from injury in a game against Woodville in 1990. Some hack named Craig McRae made his debut that game for the Bays U/17s kicked a lazy seven.....oops I think we've found one....

Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Spot on, and according to some, he must be at more than 1 ground at the same time (a huge feat in itself), it's amazing how often he cops it when he's either at a different ground, or the opposite end of the ground to where what ever he's copping it for happened.

Agreed, Williams is the premiere umpire in South Australia, there's no doubting that, him getting abused when not being withing 100 metres of a decision is not rare, in fact Ive seen him get abused at games he's not even umpiring at.
Peter Williams on the other, thank christ he isn't umpiring league any more.

He was down at U/17s this week on rotation. An AFL goal umpire also did U/17s this round. Tim Pfieffer did an U/17s game last year too, and there's many other senior umpires who have done this over time. As most will have gathered, the basic aim is to assist some of the less-experienced umpires.

I think that's a great idea, well done to whoever in the SANFL or umpires board that came up with and well done for people like Richard Williams not thinking they're above umpiring at that level.

Just for the record, up to the end of last year he had done 337 SANFL and 56 AFL matches.
