Yep !
Go to the xxxxed up VFL comp or work with what WE want within the SANFL. No other options.
The most important thing is that the SANFL comp is not destroyed.

I also like the suggestion, sadly we know how the AFl works and they will want it all.

I still think and AFL reserves comp will happen in 2014 and the crows are planning for this route.

Excellent alternative idea. If the AFL clubs are all about development then they'd consider this idea, if they had a stand alone reserves side, then they'd have to top up with amateur players anyway so the teams standard cant be their main concern, just as long as their unselected players are playing alongside each other.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Can see the merit of this for the SANFL in this but Would mean I would no longer follow footy at any level in this state with no Port in the SANFL league.

I think there are 2 seperate issues.

Crows reserves means a new side or a WAFL style host club arrangement
- for mine if it is to come into SANFL it can only be at SANFL reserves level

The same for Power reserves

As to what happens to the Magpies it can work a couple of ways

a) Have a Magpies SANFL league side (with no Power players) existing still to win SANFL premierships
- keep zone & Under 18's just have share reserves with Power
- would mean a small Magpies senior list but nothing to stop fringe Magpies players not given a chance to transfer to other clubs (generating extra income for PAFC).

b) as per this proposal, Magpies league & U18 no more, major rezoning among 8 remaining SANFL clubs.

I think this is up to the PAFC to work through as long as the Magpies league side is not holding all the Power reserves players.

Whatever the wise men decide the SANFL would be compromised and destroyed
If the AFL need/insist to have a reserve team competition it must be that, Australia wide. all Clubs with reserves team and compete as curtain raisers It is supposed to be a National Comp!!!!!!! They can surely afford it

Would be great to see AFL Reserves in with the SANFL Reserves. Would be ideal scenario for the SANFL. Not sure AFL sides would be happy with the standard though.

This is the part no one really discusses.

If the Crows put all their surplus players into one team at what level should they play?

It's like teaching one maths class to a range of kids
- from year 8 (18yo rookie listed or basketball development player)
- through to year 12 (200 game veteran coming back from injury)

and giving them one exam (the game) ... at what level do you set it???

Then there are the "top up" players who you would not expect to be at SANFL league level.

How would a 18yo potential ruckman develop facing a Craig Parry or James Mieklejohn every week?

If there are a few AFL players who dominate at reserves level so be it.

I though the reason they wanted one team was to work on one set of team rules and one match plan ...
if so what does the level of opponents really matter?

You're kidding aren't you? All Power players in the Magpie Reserves but still maintaining a League side to win SANFL Premierships? Where's their depth going to come from once all these "fringe" players have moved to other clubs, "generating more income for the PAFC"?

While you're at, how about suggesting another "advantage" like shipping them off to another venue. Let's say Ethelton?

Do the numbers

How many Power players are we talking about each week who are available to play
but were not selected in the AFL team?

A list of 42 less 22 AFL players means 20 surplus less injuries

Given most AFL clubs have at any time an injury list of 8-15 players

Aren't we are talking about 5-12 Power players each week.

Plenty of room for mine for at least some fringe Magpie players

Surely its better than not having the Magpies at all existing to win premierships?

Its just an option.

Only other alternatives I see are

- Status Quo ... too much momentum for change now.

- Magpies League = Power reserves ......... Magpies no longer exist to win SANFL league premierships
just develop Power players

- Power reserves a seperate team in AFL res or VFL - So Port have the added expense of having a 4th senior team to manage (Power L&R, Magpies L&R) ... how long will the AFL pay for that?

- Just Power League & Reserves .... no Magpies at all.

Did I miss any?

You've hit the most crucial of points Phil.

At best, at very best the two local AFL sides will have 18 players available for reserves selection.

42 on the list. 22 playing AFL. 2 emergencies when playing interstate, depending on programming ( ie - Reserves play in SANFL Saturday and AFL side playes Sunday ) and could be more.

Without injury - which simply does not ever happen - that leaves 18 players for reserves duties.

I would expect most weeks that would actually be 10 or less available to play reserves.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Not to mention that of those 10 or so, some might be on restricted game time after injury rehab and all 10 or so might need to play in the midfield for their "development"
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

Which then poses the issue should the AFL club have a horror run with injuries there could be as low as 4-5 actual AFL players playing for the team, which again would threaten the integrity of the SANFL competition and why they must be in the SANFL reserves comp.

At some point in time this year the Magpies may have ( or will have ) Butcher x2, Ebert, Neade and Newton.

The way this is all playing out it almost seems like the SANFL owes some sort of debt to the Crows and Power. Otherwise why would they even entertain this? The SANFL is a separate stand alone state league comp. It has every right to exist on its own and uncompromised. The crows and power's problems are not the SANFL's problems as I see it. So why does the SANFL have to be involved and risk its integrity in order to find solutions for the Crows and Port? This is what i don't understand!

Exactly, nailed it.
'People are not stupid. They know when they are being conned. And two reserves teams operating in a League competition will reduce it to a farce, a competition without a soul.'
