Attn South Fans, re your Fan Forum

Postby Wedgie » Sat Feb 11, 2006 6:34 pm

Hiya South Fans,

In the last month there's been no activity on the fan forum I created for South fans a couple of years ago at:
http://www.rocketrooster.com/panthers/phpBB2/index.php

Business has steadily declined since the official South site took it off as a link from their main page, not sure what's going on there as there was a "Panther Talk Under Construction" symbol there for a while but it seems they've completely given up on the notion of a fan's forum.

Is it OK if I delete it?

And even though it hasn't been used Spirit of 64 does have one set up on his site:

2 1/2 hours later and no reply from a South supporter, maybe like we suspected, they really don't have any supporters at all!

Typical of why South are underachievers - there are such a scarce number of them that you would think they had been confiened to the Museum years ago but the fact is the cannot even raise a topic or two or any interest on either of their website forums is a disgrace. Their "defeatist" attitude is an exact mirroe image of their club overall. God help them because the rest of us gave up years ago!

P.S. The Eagles forun is not much better - what is it with some of the suppporters of these clubs?

Forums I rate as really good SANFL fans forums:

Centrals new forum (cdfc.info)- well done Campbell and co
snoutslouts.org
(I started a bays forum once but it failed but that was before the tsunami of the snouts started)
http://www.rocketrooster.com (the doyen in my opinion but had a jump on the others)
Norwoods forum
doubleblue.org

Ports is only a hybrid of their AFL side and doesn't get a lot of meaningful talk but does have a few diehards.
Souths forum was doing pretty well at one stage considering the amount of fans they have when it was attached to the official site, once it got taken off the official site it was always on a downhill slide due to not having a unique url.
Eagles is ordinary, once again, professional URL makes a big diff and if they got one attached to their official site it may help (eaglesarecool, wtf?)
West have never had one but hopefully the new one will take off as there's a lot of passion in that club

Fan forums are extremely important IMHO, so much has been achieved by the successful ones I stated on top (except for CDFC as its just started but I have no doubt it will have the same impact the others do).
Norths, Norwoods and Sturts have been extremely big parts of their clubs in recent years, snouts isn't far behind them.

Fan forums are great at galvinizing fans, raising monies for club, organising social functions, and making lifelong friends.
Norwood and Glenelg clubs seem pretty aware of this fact, North to a lesser degree, I've spent less time on the Sturt forum but that's seemed to have had a big impact in functions, delivering of info, events, sponsorship, etc too.

Its all good, all fans of all clubs should work hard to ensure their respective forums work. I can't stress that more highly with what I've seen firsthand the North forum create.

The forum at south has been out of action for quite a while wedgie. I'm only summising that the "powers that be" were a tad terturbed by some of the comments posted toward the end and following last seasons apalling demise, all I can say is sometimes the truth hurts.

It all sounds very big brotherish/ howard like to stifle debate and comments by apparently the people who actually give a rats about the club and its lack of performance. This forum at the moment is the only one that provides people such as myself to make comment re: safc. Thankyou for your efforts and keep up the good work.

As for Drebins comments re: no South supporters all i can say is I have been otherwise occupied. Having fed my dog 2 large cans of PAL I felt it necessary to take her for a walk. So living in leafy Prospect where is the best place to take your dog to "empty" ...Prospect Oval. :D

he he , I was thinking along those lines when my mate Drebin posted that, just because you guys have a life on a Saturday evening unlike us North nuffies its no reason to get put down!

Back to the original question, its really no skin off my nose as I don't need the webspace or the database, is it worth keeping or perhaps I can direct people from here to Spirits website to start further South talk when the season starts?

The other thing I could do easily enough would be to give the south forum a unique url like http://www.safooty.net/south if it may help.

It ain't just the Panthers. Glenelg used to have a discussion board on their website. One day some fool posted a couple of things he shouldn't have, and a few days later the whole thing got yanked. As you say, the truth hurts . The result was that all the gossip then went to footysa.com, thereby giving GFC no editorial control whatsoever. Had they simply appointed a moderator, their message board would still be alive and they'd have retained some control.

Hi Wedgie,

apart from last week which I spent in hospital, (Won't you guys be in for a shock when you see thePearly Gates - they look strangely like the old Panther Park) I still drop in to the forum every day, but, as I appear to be the only user at the moment I am reticient to answer my own posts. (I even check out your Chat site for activity - I'm a very lonely man during off season :? )

It appears that the members are sitting on their hands waitig for the new board to screw something up before saying anything.

As far as I am concerned the more options available to members of all clubs the better so I would hate you to close the facility. My site was not meant to replace yours, just complement it.

The unique URL would be good.

Nah mate, spammers, hackers, would have every you like to call them have programs that register different names on phpbb board, Im usually deleting at least 3 a day from http://www.rocketrooster.com, usually easy to pick up as they have a name followed by a number, they tend to move between boards, I used to get a few on the Norwood board and none on the North board, had a couple here and have deleted quite a few in the past of Panther Talk.
They usually don't get active to post things when I set forums to "User activation" which means they have to click on a link in an email they receive before they're activate, most of these dodgy users use fake emails so this prevents them becoming "live".
I've just activated this on the Panther forum, previously people could just register and start posting immediately.

I'm not sure why you would ask if its my work, did I miss something?

In regard to the chat room, I'll probably scrap that one as I've never bothered advertising it correctly and create a new one which I'll attach to this site and have a direct link above before the season starts.
