Very astute.

Not trying to bait anyone, and forgive me if I am completely wrong, but I was sure that Port Power was the original Port Adelaide, and that PAM was formed to replace Port Adelaide that left to join the AwFL.

Is this not right??

JTC there is an old thread on the AFL Board thrashing that debate out ....
http://safootycentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7713&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

After debating it at length and being proved wrong I decided it wasn't really a huge deal if PAM was new, separate or the same club as PAP ...

This could go on for pages now that it's been raised on the SANFL board! :D

My recollection of this was that when the Power (the Port Power Football Club) was formed they went to great lengths to officially distinguish it from the heritage-listed SANFL Magpies (the Port Adelaide Football Club). This did this so that people like myself (who hated the Magpies) would consider supporting the Power - which I did for several years.

Over time the distinctions became blurred to the point that the Port Power Football Club assumed the name Port Adelaide Football Club and began claiming over 100 years of revisionist history. What this effectively did was alienate people on the fence like myself who cannot bring themselves to barrack for a team associated with the Magpies, hence the poor match day crowds and declining membership numbers. The SANFL Magpies meanwhile were relegated to the Port Magpies Football Club and the heart and soul was sucked out of that entity.

That's the story as I see it - please correct me if wrong.

But one thing's for sure, if I was a dyed-in the wool Magpies supporter, seeing the AFL team wear the prison bars, after all it has done to eat up and spit out the best bits of the club whose heritage it claims as its own, would make my blood boil.

ZZ,the 'Port Adelaide Football Club' adopted the nickname of the 'Power' upon entering the AFL.

There was,and has never been a registered club called the 'Port Power Football Club'.

In 1997 the 'Port Adelaide Football Club' joined the AFL,the 'Port Adelaide Magpies football club' was formed to play as the Magpies in the SANFL.

All facts.

Premierships won
Grand finals played in
Supporter/membership base
Magarey Medallists
Attandance records/crowd averages
Formidable rivalries with other such clubs (Port/Norwood, Sturt/Port, Norwood/Sturt)

These are all factors that make a great club, so from that point of view, Port Adelaide Magpies are most certainly a 'powerhouse'. So too are Sturt, to a lesser extent.

It's a little like Liverpool in the English Premiership. They haven't won a league title since 89/90 but have won their fair share of trophies along the way. They have a massive supporter base, their ground is world famous and there is a certain class or aura about them, a la Port, Norwood and Sturt.

Just a thought is winning the most 'spoons in the last 20 years a requisite for a modern day powerhouse????

If you can show me where I quoted the term 'modern day', then sure, you may have an arguement.

OK Booney, thanks for clarifying that for me, I'll take it as fact. But it's also true that when the Power started they made it clear they were a completely new entity and only more recently have taken to claiming the grand heritage of the Maggies. Do Port Magpies supporters exist who actually hate the Power?

Well in that case looking over the entire history of the SANFL you'd have to put in North (gee it hurts to type that) between Norwood and Sturt....

FWIW funny how for rivalry round the SANFL are promoting Glenelg v Port....Thought I'd better mention Port in the last sentance in a futile attempt to get this thread back on track.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I think it's a bit different comparing individuals and teams/clubs when it comes to powerhouses though Hondo.

Yes true ... how about then I use the analogy of cricket. Would you call the West Indies a 'powerhouse' in world cricket? They were ..... 20 years ago .... but now?

That's how I heard it Booney.

On that basis PAM's history goes back only 10 years. I guess this would contradict those arguements that say PAM is a powerhouse in the SANFL, either now or in their history.
