You have to beat the umpires too.

That is actually a very true statement. Bending the rules as much as possible to gain an advantage as well as picking up quickly what the laws on the day will be and making the most of it. The biggest one I've noticed this year is the man creeping over the mark. Obviously they will ping you 25m if you grab them, but watch almost every time the player on the mark will go over by 2-3 metres to prevent playing on before the umpires call them back. The umpires are very lax on this (probably because they are so strict on the holding) and it's being exploited.

I think the umpiring problem stems from them being over coached. They are doing what they think they should do instead of letting natural instincts take over. The constant rule changes can't be helping either.

As a westies supporter i always read who will umpire our games and if i see R. Williams i know we will struggle for the day with umpiring decisions. That bloke will give a free kick against us if we fart in the wrong direction.

Must admit I thought the Eagles got the rough end of the stick.
A too high in their forward lines which the umpire missed and we went on to the other end to kick a goal virtually turned it into a 12 point mistake. A couple of the in the backs as mentioned I would have paid too.
The free kicks against Hier were fair enough though, I was down that end and the reason why the frees were paid against him for being in front is because he slung Schubert around behind him.
North supporter's despite being on the good end of the umpiring stick were extremely frustrated with the holding the ball decisions not paid at times.

Was a very uninspiring game though, uninspiring performances from both teams, uninspiring fans of both teams, the umpires probably thought they'd just join in with the feel of mediocrity about the whole day.

I agree that North were favoured slightly but there were some holding the ball decisions which were not paid in favour of us as you mentioned, very frustrating. There was no atmosphere at all, it was a strange feeling at the game actually considering it was an important match and a close game until time-on in the final term.

Interesting comment Strawb07. I have mates who are North, South, and Glenelg fans and they all say exactly the same thing...(I also think he has it in for Sturt). Are we all just paranoid? Would be interested to hear from Port, Central, Norwood and Eagles supporters. Does he hate you guys as well???

You need to take the foggy goggles off. Like others have said, North probably did get the better run in the end, but from the get go?????? were you at the same game. Your mob of flat footed, slow players were bloody lucky to not get done holding the ball 10 times in the first 1/4 alone, the Eagles recieved a couple, I can't recall North recieving one HTB in the 1st 1/4.
Yes the umpiring was below par, but had not influence on the final score, and yes you did sound like a sook with sour grapes.

Yes you did,and not having seen the game it is hard for me to comment.

In general, the team that plays the better football also gets the better end of the umpiring,in general.

have to agree with you there Dog_ger. He gave away a few holding the ball FK's in snouts pocket against north, i think Tassie made that comment in another thread.

what annoys me the most about umpires is not the FK's they pay, but the one's they miss. i think Ben Kane got reported for charging in the third quarter(?). exactly same incident occured to Ben Mules in the first, not even a free.

and another thing, why do they need to follow their older brother (AFL). ever since that push in the back rule came in, the SANFL umps have to adhere to it. just ask mouse how he feels about a free paid against him in the last quarter up the snout end. clearly in the side, one handed mark, mouse running into an open goal...;)

Point taken mate. I generally don't take it too seriously but today irirtated me. I standby the fact the umpiring did not directly affect the result of today's game.

Fair call ehl - I apologise for my bundy fuelled attempt at sarcasm. Funny game today a real arm wrestle by two sides not playing anywhere near their best I would say North were about 80 percent and the Eagles 75 percent. I still think the Eagles and North will make up the top 3 at the end of the minor round (well I hope at least North do). Take nothing away from Sturt but I think they are playing above themselves. Nwd is the big improver IMO and could give the top 3 a big shake. The Eags would want to get a little bit of hurry on though[/quote]

Drebin, could you please explain what you believe 'playing above themselves' actually means, in your opinion?

I am not having a go, I have just always struggled with that expression. I prefer to use terms such as 'getting the very best out of' or 'performing to their optimum'.

I believe the 'playing above' term is a load of garbage. Teams can fluke results and cause upsets, but if they have won seven from ten and knocked off the top side in the process, then it's no flash in the pan if you ask me.

This an exert from Ron Fuller's Coaches Comments this week regarding the umpires.

"One part of the after match that I don’t agree with though was the blaming of the umpires for the loss. I think the majority of the free kicks were as a result of some real endeavour from our players but we need to brush up on our tackling techniques a little. I am sure a case could be mounted by the umpires for the free kicks and I also think it can be a counter productive move to have the umpires off side with us as a club. I am also sure they don’t buckle to intimidation anyway and I would have thought it to be the opposite if anything.

One point that was made to me was interesting though. It was noted that two of the umpires, Mackie and Bowen, are aspiring to AFL ranks and as such were a lot more technical than other SANFL umpires. This may be something for the Umpire’s Director to note as the SANFL has been promoted as being a more physical, less technical league than the AFL and we wouldn’t like to see that part of our competition go. Having said all that we will be working on our tackling this week and trying to turn around the large amount of free kicks we gave away on Sunday."

I've been impressed by the comments Fuller has made over the years ... He came in for some stick from SANFL fans (and some WWT fans) in recent years, particularly those when his team couldn't halt the CDFC juggernaut, but I reakon he is a fine leader who doesn't hide behind excuses, I dips me hat to him!
