COURAGE GETS THE EAGLES OVER THE LINE AT ALBERTON
By Peter Argent
Down at each change, a rampaging Eagles side stormed home with five last quarter goals to beat Port Adelaide in a thriller by two points at Alberton Oval. With the season on the line, an undermanned and youthful Woodville West Torrens side displayed the heart and temperament which made them Premiers last year.
Nearly three goals (16 points) down in a classic encounter at lemons, Matthew Cooper and Craig Fitzgerald dragged the visitors to within a single goal in the last term, before a reply by the Magpies. After Paul Lindsay’s first major, a goal by combative tall forward Adam Grocke gave the Eagles the lead, when kicking truly from 45 metres out.
Again starting slowly as a team, ‘best on ground’ Bernie Vince kicked the Eagles only goal of the opening term. With one goal to the Magpies four, the deficit had already reached 16 points by quarter time. Diminutive teenager Craig Fitzgerald kicked the only game of the second term and Clare lad Nick Salter was the side’s only goal kicker in the third term after a free kick. Although the Eagles peppered the goals in this premiership term, they were highly inaccurate and finished with 1.6 for the term.
Tough, skilful and creative, Vince was a dominant performer in the match whilst Luke Jarrad gave plenty of drive with his penetrating left foot. Despite an interesting haircut and gold boots, Adam Grocke was a key target in attack and Paul Lindsay continued to compete manfully in ruck. Taking a number of fierce blows, Matthew Cooper kept bouncing back and was an influential player in the win, while Captain Justin Cicolella also gained his usual share of possessions. Special mention must go to first gamer Patrick Giuffreda, who in a tough and unrelenting encounter held his composure for the entire match. Other young guns to show some promise included Jake Pavlich, Zack Hier and second gamer James Stewart.
This was one of the most important character filled victories in the last two years for the Woodville West Torrens side. Still minus senior personnel with the likes of Gavin Colville, Tim Inkster, 2006 Ken Farmer medallist Mark Passador and dual Club Champion Mark McKenzie still not expected to be available, the Eagles face West Adelaide at Thebarton Oval in another must win game next weekend.
