How'd Havelberg go today and who were the stand-out players in the Central Districts vs West Adelaide game?

Havelberg could have given his record a shake if he'd kicked straighter in the first term. 11 shots for goal in the end when he wasn't playing FF in the second half. Looked ok though, several nice marks just let himself down with his kicking which a little unusual.

Better players for the dogs were basically all the runners. Thought Griffin was great in the ruck. Was too nimble for even some West midfielders. Callinan, Slade, Thomas, O'Sullivan all too quick and hard at it. Dogs roving power was fantastic, even though we were missing Ware, Richard Cochrane and Dutschke was given a full game in the reserves. Gowans were good all day, their ball use just miles ahead of anyone else. Lawry, MacKenzie, Grima, Sibenaler, Havelberg, Griffin, Schell and Hayes all dominated the aerial contests and stretched west's undermanned KP players. The best part is all work hard at ground level so there's always a mismatch or two somewhere with one standing someone inferior at ground level or in the air, or often both. West were a rabble.

No we wont, if that was the case Sturt would have been gone in the mid 90s, however through hard work they rebuilt thier club and achieved the ultimate. Too much money in the SANFL now from the AFL clubs (one of them anyway LOL) and the pokies.

I they weak don't want to change to bad and they will die, however teh supporters will not allow that as we have seen with Sturt and North in the last decade....

I have to agree with the Tiger supporter this time Dogger. All the reports I have read say that West and South have a stack of cash, and it is Sturt and Norwood that are struggling to put bread on the table. However you add it up at the moment, Norwood and Sturt have too many supporters to go under and West and South have too much cash.
I sincerely hope your 8 team prediction is just a hunch or something like that, reading all the old Woodville threads on the History forum just about brings a tear to my eye. I don't want to see any of the remaining 9 teams go, (unless it womehow results in the rebirth of Torrens and Woodville as seperate entities) no matter how crap or poor they are.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

How many were turning up to NAFC games during McDermott's "reign" Wedgie?

Dunno the exact figure mate, but as far as my friends and aquaintances go more then than now as I've had a few friends move interstate since then because of work. One of my good mates is coming back in September after being stuck in Canberra since about 2000 and Im looking forward to that.

Sorry James but IIRC, we had a loan from the SANFL waivered. I think it was to the tune of 150K.
Sturt also USED to own half the real estate in Unley and had to sell that off to keep afloat as well as donations from Lloyds helicopters...

If we still had all that real estate now????????

That may be the case with your mates Wedgie, but I remember numbers at NAFC home games (and more particularly away) games dwindling significantly during that era.

I think we all on this site would agree that when a team is going well its support (numerically) increases, just like it will decrease if it's not. The old saying "everyone loves a winner" certainly rings true.

SFC is no different to any other club in that regard.

ill stand corrected then but for the fans to rally like they did, it shows something. i remember being genuinely ******* scared that the sfc would fold then adn i didnt even really understand the position we were in as i was about 14 or so at the time. good point about the real estate!!!

I would have to agree with you Rhino - no doubt that when any club goes through a sustained period of being down the bottom (or near it) the support drops off. I used to admire the diehards from Sturt who went week in and week out during those wooden spoon years, much the same as us diehards at Norht that go no matter what.

The funny thing is that North's lowest support years were under McDermott and they picked up when Darel Hart had his second stint as coach including the dismal 2003 season - maybe it was because Hart was a faourite son?

When Jars came back on board combined with good financial results starting to show off field our 2004 support was huge in terms of the previous 6 or so years. I ran into people in the last 3 years who hadn't been to a game since the mid 90's but jumped back on the bandwagon.

Everyone loves a winner so to speak!
