Brenton Honor Article

Postby redandblack » Sun Jul 15, 2007 3:02 pm

i have to say I was disappointed with this article in the paper this morning, referring to his comments about West Adelaide.

As much as we deserve most of the criticism coming our way at the moment, knee-jerk comments such as Brenton's "It appears their now customary off-season recruiting binge has again failed" have to be challenged.

One of the obvious things that came out of yesterday's game was the chasm in experience between the two sides. Centrals had far more interstate recruits that had played AFL or VFL than West, who had 5 recent or current Under 19's playing, despite most of their better juniors now playing for interstate AFL teams. Compared to other sides such as South and Port, if anything West have probably under recruited from interstate in recent times.

This is no criticism of those other sides, but it would have been nice for Brenton to have given a bit of thought or research before he wrote his article.

As it happens, just as well we recruited what we did this year, as this year's new recruits have consistently been in our better players, so this year's recruiting has hardly failed.

I'd commend Chris Kendall's article referred to in another thread as being a far more thoughtful look at West's problems.

I agree that it was a bit harsh of Brenton to write what he did. Also noticed a glaring error in Doug Robertson's writeup of the Sturt v South game. He said that Sturt's score was the second highest for the season, being just behind Glenelg's score against West. Has he already forgotten the Central v Norwood game??

SDK,
Former AFL listed players who are now back at the Ponderosa are Wilson, Schell, Thomas, Ware and Switala. Technically Ware never left the Ponderosa as he never had to go interstate.
Cheers

honor obviously has done it again (put foot in mouth) as when he was on the abc tv games he made a comment about teams flooding & it should not happen at any level etc (i agree) but what he failed to remember that day was that when coaching glenelg he introduced flooding to the sanfl when he had every glenelg player in defence apart from cameron venables who was up forward, that day we played the eagles at the adelaide oval, honor = no idea, as for todays article honor = no idea again
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

who is this guy? i mean yes he did "coach" my side, but after that - what did he do?

sunday mail editors must be thinking..."we have to fill up some space, lets give it to some hack". is it me or is this another example of the "respect" given to the SANFL by the sunday mail*

But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

Was amazed he still think the Eagles will crack the top 3 with Sturt dropping out. Sturt own a 3 win advantage, albeit having played 1 more game and a bit of percentage advantage as it stands. Surely after what Sturt have shown you would expect them to win enough to keep the #3 spot at worst, and the Eagles would have to not lose another game. Possible, but very tough to do and you couldn't tip it. The mail are wasteing their money with both Honor and McDermott.

PS, does McDermott's pic on the back page look more than a little touched up to anyone else?

As much as I dislike Honor and his most often "off the mark" comments - he was spot on with what he wrote about North given what we served up today. He was clearly wrong with picking us to finish 2nd because on form and results (even allowing for our 4 on the trot wins up to today), Sturt and the Bays are more deserving and have shown that to be the case.
