pool a,

penguin v sandringham (tas)

subiaco v central (subiaco)

winners play at the mcg afl grand final day

pool b,

southport, ainslee, balmain & perhaps a nt side

Would need a few weeks between games after the SANFL Gf as it usually takes Chris & James a while to get over it :partyman:

would love it, but wouldnt want it tied in with the afl grand final, do it as a pre-season thing.

i thought that it would give blokes the opportunity to play in front of a huge crowd & as a preseason game it then becomes a trial & also teams may have lost players to the draft & they wouldn't be able to play

Pfft top A1 teams and VIC amateur teams would beat the QAFL, ACTFL and SFL teams. Maybe not Brissy but Goody Saints/Broadview etc would give them a damn good run for their money. Certainly QAFL and SFl teams are closer instandard to SAAFL Div 1 than they are to SANFL league.

I'd back most SANFL ressies teams agaisnt a TFL side too.

Mismatch SANFL. VFL and WAFL only
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

true, but its still probably a better option than having to re-arrange our season, maybe do it a few weeks after the GF, would still lack the crowds, and still the possibilty of losing players though, i think the concept deffinatley has merit though.

Yes, good idea but keep it away from the AFL GF. The AFL would never consider playing it then anyway.

Also agree with Tassie - must be WAFL, SANFL, VFL only.

Play it after the season has finished like the old days, if at all.

Balmain Dockers are winless in 2007 - try St George or North Shore.

Sounds nice but there are far too many things not thought of. Besides the fact that it simply wouldn't happen, any 17th best team in Australia competition would only be fair if all premiers from the states and territories were able to win. The TFL, QAFL and NSWAFL and NTFL teams would be detroyed but would still have to be given the chance. The NT play during summer, the AFL already has a couple of games happening before the GF (and it won't change for any SANFL v WAFL match). You would have to cut the preseason comp by about 3 weeks decimating the preseason match practice for teams or reduce the season length which would affect the sponsorship and clubs revenue streams enormously. Plus I'd like to go to about 20 dogs regular season matches a year, and not 16 since that's what it will be reduced to. Many players wouldn't play due to surgery or to rest after a tough season, and with the amount of change in personnel that happens in any SANFL club at the end of the year a premier might have half the GF team actually playing. Reserves players wouldn't be able to take that much time off their normal jobs to actually take the game seriously, and perhaps many league players would be in the same boat. Missing a Friday of work once a season is very different to taking a couple off for some promtionanal event. We also would then be playing finals in wetter conditions and increase the chances of the greatest specactle in the SANFL being reduced to a farce like 1989. Nice idea in principal, but there are a lot of things that would be too hard to work around for the miniscule benefit of bragging rights over teams in other competitions.

Never, ever ... once we went to a national league then concept like this died in the water. They won't be treated seriously in the pre-season because players may have retired or left the club and players will be injured or don't care, mid-season is the obvious problem that we see with AFL SOO footy and post-season is all about footy trips and operations plus it would be a case of CFZ (care factor zero) unless there was a huge carrot like a winner-take-all prize of $200,000+ adn no financial cost for the clubs to get there and play - but there are no sugar daddies out there to do that.

Am I right in thinking that the Gowans have played in something like 10 consecutive grand finals? Does anyone actually know whether this is true or not?

My understanding is 11 in a row.
Played in 4 before they came to Central.

That's a fair effort if true :prayer:
