nick salter, after the round 14 win against west announced his retirement, but through their bye week was asked by his team mates to reconsider & obviously he did which is great for the comp & even greater for the eagles.

Do you know why he wanted to retire? I can't think why in the world he would, he is only 19?

Which for those that knock the bye, it can be a handy thing for the players.

Just because he went home, doesn't mean that he was going to retire. That guy who told you that, should check with the club first before saying things like that.

Have heard from VERY reliable sources that Nick was feeling tired, jaded and burnt out as he had been playing footy in special squads, state under-age teams etc for quite awhile and that the grind of it all was getting to him. Some very diligent and persuasive work by Eagles officials and leadership group players plus a week off to re-charge and reflect have turned things around to Nick's and the club's benefit.

I know that people will say that AFL is the highest level and that's what all players go for, but those state under age teams and such get in the way of what I think star young players would benefit the most - playing SANFL League. Chances are players like Salter or Fairclough and for past instances Gibbs will end up going to a lowly ranked Victorian AFL club, so they should be able to play with their mates as much as possible in the mean time.

Besides, recruiting staff look at the SANFL grades a lot anyway.

Wedgetail, your information is correct and Nicks thoughts mirror those of a lot of other lads in his age group who find the committment overwhelming. The club and in particular the playing group has turned this situation into a positive and Nicks form has been terrific since he freshened up.

Geez, I'm glad they talked him into staying. A very good young player! Hopefully he's enjoying his footy now. If it's not fun, it's pretty hard to keep doing something. Ironic that he was going to give it away after the West game, which was the first game most of us would have seen him really dominate up forward.
