PhilH is a mate and I don't particularly enjoy being critical of clubs, or being critical of bodies that offer hospitality (I was there calling for Pine Lodge, and was invited to the home match lunch) - just a manners thing I guess, Dutchy.

Having said that, after all that was said during the week about events there, the result on-field wasn't an impressive one at all for the group. It may be easy to say, but I was really mystified that, with so much on the line, so much to play for and the opportunity for a very big statement - the skills at times were among the worst I have seen in SANFL for 5 years.

OK CK, just thought that needed to be clarified, I think the off field department including Phil are doing a great job down there in setting the club for success long term not short term...

Couldn't agree with that more, Dutchy - off-field, South look very promising. Cars around the oval (which I love, personally), the redevelopment, the marketing initatives and so many more things; as I wrote in Sportsbeat a couple of weeks back, everything off-field looks very good, and Ben Kavenagh, PhilH etc are doing all they can to turn it around - however, clubs are ultimately measured on-field...

(on that note, after the articles about West and South over the past few weeks, and within 4 days of each being published, both clubs parted ways for 2008 with their coaches, I'm not game to write about any other club this year! ;-) ;-) )

It's amazing to think that Wests last win was against us in Round 5. So much has changed for every club in that time (except Central), but West appear to be in the same position as last year - bottom, but not the worst team on form and on the improve.

I walked into the ground thinking we'd actually win today, so this loss was more frustrating than any of the previous four.

Two players stood out today - Ellis and Warren. Both presented bloody hard and took some strong marks from very crap forward delivery. I know the pair only managed 4.6 and a few other non-scoring attempts between them, but both did look really good. Almost everyone else, the less said, the better.

You're right, CK, I for one enjoyed the win - it's been a long time between drinks.

The really pleasing feature of today's win was the number of young players who really contributed, including Hamish Hartlett, in the best 4 or 5 in his first game.

Westies average age was a tick under 22 today, comforatbly the youngest side going around, I would think.

If anyone cares I tipped West today, they played pretty well for 3/4 last week and did a fairly good job against Sturt the week before, by all reports.
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

Based on today's performance we have got a lot of work to do.

We really need to sort in out before next Sat night at Hamra oval.

I hope that Westies can have a few more wins before season's end.

Particularly against Port and Norwood
