6/3/06 Article in Advertiser about 5AA v 5RPH

Postby Wedgie » Mon Mar 06, 2006 7:12 pm

First of all it was false as it said 5AA were taking the Sturt v Central game from Rd 1 which wont happen because the Power are playing the Kangaroos at the same time.

This from 5RPH today:

STATEMENT OF CLARIFICATION
6th March 2006

In today's Advertiser there was an article titled "Voluntary Redundancy" which claimed that was a conflict between FIVEaa and 1197am RPH Adelaide regarding SANFL broadcasts. This release wishes to clarify statements made in this article.

1197am RPH Adelaide does not have an issue with the SANFL or FIVEaa regarding coverage of the 2006 SANFL season.
We accept that FIVEaa is a commercial station with responsibilities to maximise listener ratings. Therefore it has a commitment to AFL football first and can only
cover SANFL when scheduling permits.

As a community station 1197am RPH Adelaide has no such pressure and is able to deliver the most comprehensive coverage of the SANFL possible. This was
reflected last year not only in the station winning the SANFL Media Award for "SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION" but also a national award from the Australian
Sports Commission for "BEST COMMITMENT TO THE COVERAGE OF SPORT".

We are unaware of any dispute over SANFL Round One coverage. The Central v Sturt match on April 1st is scheduled at the same time as the Port Adelaide v
Kangaroos match at AAMI Stadium. It would be surprising if FIVEaa ever considered dropping this match to cover the SANFL game.

Even if FIVEaa's six matches are taken out it is still possible for 1197am RPH Adelaide to broadcast live 50 matches this season, a record for any radio station
in the 129 year history of the SANFL. This would be in addition to at least six hours of dedicated local football segments every week, a possible 300 hours of coverage this season.

We look forward with other broadcasters to giving the SANFL the comprehensive coverage it deserves.

ALL enquiries regarding this issue are to be directed to:

Today's article in the Advertiser about AA and RPH.

Postby sturtpeter » Mon Mar 06, 2006 10:56 pm

I sent a fax into the twins and already knew the situation wasn't as stated in our local rag.

KG had a go at the journalists etc but we don't know if the game will receive any radio coverage.

The annoying thing about 5AA is they honestly feel they do a great service for the local game. How totally ignoring the SANFL is doing a great service I'll never understand. 5AA are pathetic.

considering that the two 5AA 'personalities' both have life long attachments to the SANFL it makes it even harder to accept just how little air time the SANFL receives. I notice too that when a caller rings up on an SANFL topic the call is a short one, with general comments only being given by the presenters. I don't know how much in touch they are with the various clubs, with the exception of Glenelg for Cornsey.
5PRH do a great job and deserve more exposure, so that more people are aware of their service.

I think it was summed up on last Saturday morning's sportshow.

Someone rang up about the pre-season getting it back on the way Jars wanted it.

Then the caller got stuck into KG for not having the time to even say what SANFL games are on and the teams for 5 minutes of the show.

As the caller hung up, KG said that they do read the teams out every Friday night, then Dittmar decided to have his word and said "the loyal followers are the only ones who really now who they are playing and where so why bother" or something to that extent as if it didn't matter to 5AA as to whether they reported the games on a Friday or not.

Says a lot me thinks................................

How many SANFL games do 5aa cover each year. 10 if that and that includes the finals and maybe Anzac Day. While 5rph does a ton more than that. What 5aa could is cover both the Adelaide and Port games and then cover the SANFL. eg say there is a Friday night game at Adelaide Oval they should cover that game instead of the AFL game (if it isn't a game that includes either Adelaide AFL side).

5AA they are a joke, i mean i agree with what everyone else has mentioned, just because they are commercial they think they can run the whole thing. Whenever they do an SANFL which is rarely apart from finals i switch off, because really do any of those commentators know what they are talking about. they wouldnt have seen an SANFL game during the year and only go on what they read and are told.

I didnt hear the sat morning sport show, but does that really surprise anyone that their attitude towards the SANFL pre-season is who cares?

they dont care about the SANFL unless its a game they are broadcasting during the year.

The SANFL the second strongest league outside the AFL only manages to get about 5 mins a week on supposedly the best highest rating sports show in adelaide.

If you like radio which is consumed with pushing the so called personalities of their presenters then 5AA is the go. I try to listen but invariably the manufactured arguments and posturing of the presenters gets in the way. It is great to be the no 1 drive time sports show...but not if your it with no competition!!!.
It was either last season or the one before, when a caller challenged KG and his cohorts to give constructive criticism after a poor showing by the Crows (must have been in Ayres' time). In a rare moment of candour, one of the presenters (M.A initials) stated that they couldn't do that, for fear of upsetting the relationship they have with the hierarchy of the A.F.C. That sums up a big part of the problem. The kid glove handling of the AFL clubs and the ignorance of the SANFL go hand in hand, make no mistake.
In terms of the promotion of the SANFL, it is dismal, which is why i hope 5RPH grows in profile as well as in their financial situation,
because they have a gaping hole to fill.

thry don't call themselves 5AAFL for nothings me thinks. They don't care about the SANFL and they have proved it. I want KG and Cornesy to call a westies vs Glenelg match that would be a hoot. I bet they wouldn't know 3/4 of the players without a budget. What west and Glenelg should do is have the players wear different numbers to the budget also that'll fukem.

It's not just AFL that they handle with kid gloves, it's Lleyton Hewitt and a number of other 'mates' that they are frightened to upset.
