Watching channel seven sport today did I see the ex ethelton coach over in finland competing in this World championship event over the weekend? Or did he miss qualification?

Finn throws to win at World Cellphone Throwing championship
Posted Aug 28th 2006 1:18AM by Ryan Bloc

This year's Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships have come and gone, friends, and we're pleased to report to you the winningest of the cellphone throwers that came from the world over to test their metal tossing mettle. Second place in the freestyle event went to Dutchman Elie Rusthoven, who was almost disqualified for throwing his phone out of bounds, but mustered a silver by performing a phone juggling act that won over the judges (seriously, we can't make this stuff up). But it was a gentleman by the name of Lassi Etelatalo, a Finnish javelin thrower, that lobbed his Nokia to victory at a distance of 89m, or about 291 feet -- just shy of the length of alberton oval, and plenty enough to crush Ville Piippo's standing record of 82.55 meters. (First place in the women's event went to Eija Laakso, who tossed hers 50.83 meters.) Go long man, real long -- like, Naomi Campbell long.

Mobile phone throwing is an international sport that started in Finland in the year 2000. It is a sport in which participants throw mobile phones and are judged on distance or technique.

There are usually four categories in the sport:[1]

Original (also called 'Traditional'): an over-the-shoulder throw with the farthest distance winning (best of 3)
Freestyle: contestants get points for aesthetics and creative choreographics
Team original: up to three competitors have one throw each with their scores added together
Junior: for children aged 12 or younger
The phones used vary not just between events but between competitors, with any phone that weighs over 220 grams being acceptable.[2] At some events the choice is down to personal preference from those provided by the event organisers, while others provide only one model of phone.

S Williams was robbed. A spectator got in the line of flight and robbed him of a record that would have stood for a very long time. I think he was distracted by the ginger hair.

I think the spectator s. williams clobbered with a phone was bald.

Anyway williams would have been disqualified as he threw a wall phone not a cell phone (they tell me they hurt more).

Maybe with S.Williams' 3 jobs (PAP assistant, fireman and ABC radio comments) he could afford to go to the next phone throwing championships himself! I believe he will need to improve his accuracy though as he only struck the poor, innocent Eagles supporter a glancing blow.

Ferret and Wedgetail, as I have mentioned previously on this site I was a witness to this very poor act from the super coach. The poor gentleman struck by the very hefty phone did receive some nasty injuries and did not even get an apology from the individual responsible nor the club. The super coach could have yelled out ''it's for you" before he threw it and given the gentleman at least some warning. The Eagles gentleman that was injured is a very fair and unbiased observer of the game and he has not been the same since this event. I know he is a keen cricketer (wicketkeeper) and blames a very poor attempt at a catch he made on the fact that a mobile phone rang whilst he was in the act of running down a top edge that he would have normally taken.

Jackal, yes it was an extremely poor effort. I reminded the super coach of this in future games at the neutral ground of alberton, by asking if he wanted tco borrow a phone. I was accused of having the phone thrown at me, but alas I was chanting seven in a row, elsewhere.
I know for a fact that the under 19 ethelton coach had phones handed down him that has been unaturally abused, and were damaged beyond usefulness by the said ethelton super coach. Does anyone know if he passed his anger compulsory anger management classes?

Yes Ferret, I too was a spectator in the Grandstand at Oval Avenue on the day the phone was ripped from the wall.
After following the SANFL for many, many years, I rate that incident as one of the worst I have ever witnessed. I continue to wonder whether the Port Magpies have ever recovered from the former Ethelton coaches reign.
After the Eagles season defining victory at Ethelton earlier this year, I was disgusted by the Magpies refusal to shake the hands of the Eagles players post match. Obviously another carry over from his time as coach. I wonder how Von and Fos would feel about the current situation down Ethelton way?
