Waxing?

Postby Spiritof64 » Fri Mar 10, 2006 11:36 pm

I was watching the Crows training session against Melbourne tonight and thought it looked like they were waxing. Then I wandered where the word originated.

I thought it may have come from a GFC training session when one player said to another "You take this kick while I'm waxing my legs".

Although it sounds reasonable it may not be true.

Does anyone know the real origin of the word?

No, but it was in common usage when I was a school boy (born 1936).

And I've never waxed my legs.

'waxing' has been used in cricket cricles when at training, 2 players would 'wax' a ball between them, in other words, share it between balls bowled in the nets...so basically they just shared a ball due to lack of balls, common around the prospect c.c.c these days, as indicative of their ladder position.

I thought it had something to do with " wax lyrical" when someone does something really good. This being derived from those old, round, black things that don't fit in my CD player.

Players usually wax their legs due to the straping from the trainers on the ankle. If they don't the hairs would hurt when the straping comes of at the end of the game/training.

Players in fact don't wax as much as they used to. You could say that waxing is waning or that the Demons couldn't hold a candle to the Crows on Friday night.
