CHIMNEY CEREMONY

The "Brewery Chimney" tradition began in 1954 when an employee suggested that due to the fact the Brewery was in West Adelaide's territory, the chimney should be painted in the team's colours of red and black.

The then Managing Director of SA Brewing agreed - providing West Adelaide went to the top of the premiership ladder that year.

Fos Williams, then Port Adelaide captain and coach, said his team had no intention of letting West Adelaide win the premiership - and would he consider painting Port's colours on the chimney if Port won. It was agreed.

Port Adelaide beat West Adelaide in a thrilling 1954 Grand Final. It was Fos Williams who, after helping to stir the white paint, suggested that a red stripe be added to the chimney to symbolise West's gallant fight.

Ever since, the colours of both the winners and the runners-up have adorned the chimney each year.

lol, what would the brewery know about their own chimney?
Or maybe Ian bribed West End to change their story from the truth just to discredit you!

Admit you stuffed up mate, Ian has come up with hard core proof, do the same yourself otherwise your statements have no cred whatsoever.

imagine the uproar if they painted the chimney white, with 2 little red & blue racing stripes...

Win or lose, surely we're entitled to have our jumper accurately descripted on the chimney?
Also, the design didn't give credit to Centrals WINNING the flag, so the change was beneficial for both parties...

I reckon we've had at least 4 different designs from the 6 flags so they don't necessarily try and match up with guernseys - they are just doing their best to support our comp with a public gesture that lasts 12 months.

I agree with your point, punky, that neither club was particularly well represented with the original design.

This year, they are going to paint some of the chimney twice and we still find something to complain about?
