So what? With the same coach, Central lost 6 less games this season than the previous season. Does this mean that Central was the biggest improver for 2007?

Rick took a team on the brink of finishing bottom to an acceptable 12-8. We are very lucky to have secured his services.

Pete, my friend, I am not arguing that. Rick did a great job and showed a lot of what he learned at Central (as well as North and the Eagles). Equally though there is no doubt that the club enjoyed a bandwagon of support during its deserved success. It was good for supporters to be able to see their club do a Phoenix and rise from the ashes.

From the ashes ...??? :?

Sturt have been one of the most successful teams of the last 10 years and only missed the finals once or twice in that time

This has been going on all season .... lads Sturt 2006 wasn't Woodville of the 80s (with all due respect to Eagles supporters)

I take nothing away from Rick and his 5th place finish .... good effort all round

Well, based on that theory mate, no it does not mean Central were the biggest improver.

Based on your formula, Sturt were the bigger improver as they lost 9 fewer games for the season, as opposed to Centrals 6 fewer.....

Sometimes you are a bit to clever for yourself, it would seem.

And FWIW, I agree with Hondo. All this talk of Sturt 'coming from nowhwere' and 'tasting some success for the first time in ages' is rubbish.

Since 1997, Sturt have played off in two deciders for one loss and one win in 2002. They are behind only Central and WWT in winning %, finals participation and success.

Hondo, would you not agree that Sturt were struggling in a number of areas in 2006, both on and off-field? Do you not agree that their board and coach did a tremendous job in 2007, arresting their slide and putting a very good structure in place. A structure I believe will see Sturt having great success in the near future.

Would you agree that the Sturt side that played off in the Elimination final was clearly a better side on paper than the teams that finished outside the 5?

If so, they have played to their potential after a shocker 2006 - 1 year off does not make a slide surely? Are you saying the results of the last 10 years were achieved without a proper structure off the field? They are one of only 3 sides to win a premiership since 1999.

Flash back to mid-late 1990s and I would agree with you

I am not trying to take anything away from Sturt's achievements in 2007! It's just talk of "phoenixes" and "rising from the ashes" that is a bit much IMO.

For the ultimate time I state:

In 2006, the Mighty Double Blues under-achieved.

As MST appropriately stated we won 9 more games during the Minor Round, and but for an unfortunate Umpiring decision during the ultimate Minor Round game at AO on Friday September 7th., Sturt would have deservedly gained the valuable Double-Chance, not had an allegedly incompetent Umpire in the Elimination Final and played off in the GF.
