VFL vs SANFL

Postby Rushby Hinds » Mon Oct 22, 2007 12:44 pm

Have heard a few whispers that with the ever changing league that is the VFL, with the changes for 2008 some of the clubs have some pretty big cheque books and are offering big bucks enticing ex-VFL types to go home again, more then they are getting from the SANFL.

Obviously makes it harder to recruit new players as well.

Also did hear of another SANFL (ex VFL) player who did not want to go back to his old VFL team as the clubs keep changing so much over there (with the AFL teams sticking their noses in all the time) he didnt know anyone at the club from only a few years ago.
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

Unfortunately I have always thought that this was only a matter of time, and we'd been farily lucky to keep our comp strong up until now. I certainly hope I'm wrong, but eventually the VFL will get it's act sorted out (obviously AFL don't give a rats'), bit like the A-League finally has.

The non AFL aligned VFL clubs have an unlimited Salary Cap to sign ex-AFL Victorians or keep present players at the clubs. The only problem is that the VFL clubs don't have the income to support spending huge amounts and they are not likely to improve that either .So that's one area where we will stay ahead with our income levels and if some clubs bit the bullett, the Salary Cap shoud increase here to really nail the interstate recruits to keep our comp as clearly the second best in Oz.

The VFL's biggest competition re player retention is the Vic Country where there is no salary cap restrictions as such (brown paper bags and cash in hand is the way they do it). The VFL and AFL have tried with no success to limit the spend in the Vic Country leagues but have given up as it is way too hard to police plus they are at least grateful the players stay in Vic.

Unheard of here of course.

Spot on, it will take a long time for the Vics to alter the perception of both comps. As long as we continue to improve, they will remain a long way behind us.
