Sponsors Logo's on Guernseys

Postby Punk Rooster » Sun Apr 02, 2006 11:17 am

I think it's time the SANFL ensured clubs Jumpers remain Sponsor free, & limit space to a defined size on either the back of the jumper below the number, or below & above the number. I've never really been "comfortable" with the way things are, but I also prefer we didn't do down the AFL track, of replacing club logos with sponsors- interesting that the AFL clabs have never had club logos on their jumpers. Thoughts?

Yes- to celebrate a victory from 1834! Yes, they're an exception to the rule, & the Cats have only just introduced theirs in recent times.

Well that's a bit different to "never had club logos on their jumpers"

PS On the topic I prefer a sponsors emblem in a badge format only taking up a small part of the guernsey. Some guernseys current intricate their sponsor quite well but some are absolute shockers with it looking like something's just been plonked on there with no thought given. From memory South's looked a shocker last year and Westies wasn't far behind them, I think both had white sponsor patches on dark guenseys.

Its interesting that in US sport there is NO advertising on their uniforms at all in any of the major sports, im sure there would have been plenty of pressure for that to change but it hasnt - image the extra cash they could generate if they did, yet still resist

I was referring to the fact that they didn't have the logos in the same sense as all SANFL clubs have theirs... Also, the St Kilda crest wasn't their logo- I'm talking about the "shields" all clubs used to have- they're the ones that never appeared.
Dutchy, are you talking about the "CFC" which is a part of their jumper design anyway?

Yes, it is interesting, as surely they'd get squillions for it? Hand it to the Yanks on that one, preserving the integrity of the uniform.

Carlton, yes, St Kilda if it is, it wasn't always- they had the stick figure angel inside the shield with SAINTS above it- all clubs had the same design, much like the SANFL logos were uniform, until Norwood broke ranks (followed by the Dogs...)

logos

Postby RUSure » Sun Apr 02, 2006 5:04 pm

There are league rules re the size of sponsors logos. Maybe the number of logos should be limited? Each club to their own but the hotch potch of logos on the Sturt, Port, Glenelg, South looks shabby. have to admire the simplicity of Centrals in this instance.

re the US example - let's compare apples with apples. In the States there are very few cities with two teams competing in the same competition. many have a baseball, ice hockey, gridiron team, basketball team but ,many have just one or two of these in big cities. ticket sales and merchandise are massive (who has never owned a Yankees cap). integrity of uniform and there system are two different things. Not to mention private ownership, shifting teams (franchises) to other cities for improved conditions, etc.

Got to admit I liked it in the old days when it was just a front logo opposite club emblem and a patch on the shorts. I grudginly accepted the one sponsor on the back but now with a sponsor above the number too and another sponsor on the front of the guernsey it has become too cluttered for my liking.

Personally I'd love to see the sponsor logo limited to one on the shorts one on the right brest not the front of the guernsey and one on the back as per the AFL.

Would hate to see the club wmblem go in lieu of a sponsors logo...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

The advertising on West's jumper is just a mockery of sport in general.

Don't like how the guernseys have become walking billboards over the years.

But it's money back in the coffers so what can you do?

Silly to compare the SANFL to American professional sports.

Port Magpies have been one of the worst offenders in recent years, but I reckon West's jumper looks like someone slapped a bumper sticker on the front of the jumper. Perhaps the SANFL could introduce a rule where...
1) replace SANFL logo with small sponsors logo
2) enforce smaller logos, under club emblem (defined size)
3) ape the AFL, & have sponsor instead of emblem (I'm against this)
4) no sponsor on front, 1 sponsor allowed under number on back.
5) Allow sponsors logo's on the sleeves of the L/S jumpers. This is a bit "left field", as the percentages of players who wear them are low indeed. Just a thought though, & it may encourage L/S in the colder months, say where the club is on a pro-rata basis?

The clubs need this income, no doubt about that, but I think some sanity has to prevail. Even our Mistral logo (& nobody appreciates what Rob Gerrard has done for North more than us Rooster supporters) interferes with our V.
