Is finishing Minor Premiers worth the effort.

Postby Spiritof64 » Tue May 02, 2006 8:12 pm

(NOT slagging Rooster's U17's here, just have a serious topic to discuss so read it carefully b4 u jump in boots n all)

I was just reading the "All the Grades Scores" thread, and I got to thinking if finishing Minor Premiers was worth the effort.

Last year the Panthers U17 were MP's and had a bye in the last round. As MP's they had a bye in the first round of the finals. They then overran the Bantams in a Semi and went straight into the GF a fortnight later.

This meant they had 1 game in 4 weeks going into the GF where the Bantams who got there the hard way (to their credit) ran all over them.

If you look hard enough you can find numerous other examples. Can anyone see a way around this? A new finals system etc.
The Older I get the BETTER I WAS!!!!

The bye in the last few rounds has been given to the bottom sides from the year before.

Unfortunately this isnt much help for the other grades. Stiff shit. The minor premiership is still a distinc advantage.

Spirit, another fine eg was in 1991 when South were the MP but went nowhere.
Mind you North wouldn't have been if they hadn't thrown a game as they didn't want a 2 week break with a bye thrown in.

I don't want to make excuses but I do think the bye in 02 hurt us.

I think it should be policy that no team that finished in the finals in the previous year should get the bye last round.

What you should do if you have the bye in the last round is not to finish top, that way you have games more regularly spaced out.

very good point spirit (and the others). Depending on where the bye falls it can really hurt having too mnay breaks come finals time.

Port Fuggin Adelaide had the bye in the last round last year. Norwood played North Constancy.

It is policy as the last two byes are given to teams outside the previous years final 5.

Really? Well whats the problem then (except the fact that there is a bye)?

I dont think there is one in the league. Unless the unlikely event occurs that a team from outside the previous yeras 5 win the minory. The problem is in the other grades.

I agree, the bye in the last round does not help, by the time you have reached the finals you have played plenty of footy for the year, so one week off should not impact, two weeks off though is probably not ideal, and if you win your first final and go straight to the GF, well one game in a month prior to the GF would be extremely difficult to manage
