SANFL needs to do more promotions aimed at kids

All discussions to do with the SANFL

I think Phil Herden wrote in one of his articles in The Messenger a few weeks ago about giving the kids that attend Auskick a free ticket with free admission for one adult to an SANFL game. This is a great idea and should be implemented. Maybe even organize for those kids to form a guard as the players run out on the field at the start of each game. Anything to encourage young kids and their parents to get to the SANFL is worth a try.

Even though I barrack for Port, I got a huuuge buzz out of playing mini-league.

For Centrals. At Elizabeth.

The Bulldog faithful were so appreciative, they spat on us.

FWIW, we got flogged by West.

Not the easiest oval for mini league, Elizabeth!
I played there in 1989 for Norwood against the Doggies. No idea on the result.

I remember going to a few Pie and Pastie nights at The Parade when we were in the later primary school years. Was funny, our coach at the time was high up in the Maggies club (GE? maybe) so it was very much "enemy territory" for him. Especially more so when we were made to watch the '84 grand final all the way through!

Back when I was a boy we played at Football park...none of this across the oval stuff! We played the full length of the ground. Ahhh they were days...it took one 7 and half minute quarter to get the ball up one end of the ground and another 7 and half minute quarter to get the ball down the other end.

In all seriousness something needs to be done for youngsters. When the Eagles merged I lost interest in the club. I was about 14. I wasn't into the Crows so I dropped out of following footy...that is until somehow I received a free season ticket to the Eagles ( I think the SANFL gave them, out to all clubs in 91 or 92). I had a few mates who would go with me so I attended about half of the games.

The reason I followed the mighty Warriors is because my Dad took me to games and after the game I got to meet the likes of Ralph Sewer, Malcom Blight and Richard Champion and I think I was one of the last people to ever see Allen Jacovich alive : ).

Unfortuntely the Crows and the Powder are to kids today what the SANFL was to us. And it just doesn't seem to bother the SANFL one little bit. They get their money from the two AFL clubs and that is who they are happy to support.

The other 'modernism' that annoys me profusely is in the mini-league, where we have a situation of the home team playing v Coca-Cola....... What a disgrace.

Not sure that's a disgrace as Ian's kid is hoping he'll be lining up for the red and white Coca-Cola as he doesn't want to pull on an Eagles guernsey in a couple of weeks time at Thebby.

Perhaps at Prospect you could have the diet Cokes or Coke Zero's so that there is not two teams in red- shocking to watch. At our school in my lads team we have one in Central's, one in a Eagles jumper and the rest in Power, Crows or school t-shirt.

To bump this thread back up, a phone call to the right person resulted in three senior Bays players visiting our Auskick session early last Sunday Morning. All three were great, got heavily involved, and the kids loved it. Plenty of tops and posters were autographed after the event. One of the players drove for over an hour to get there, gets a big tick from me.

Great stuff Borat, its our last week this week and I'm umming and arring whether to go or not with the early game at Footy Park.
I'll keep in mind your advice for next year and get in quick.
I must admit I did talk to an ex North/Port league footy player a couple of months ago and he said he'd be willing to come down for a session or two despite living a long way away, you're spot on when you say if you don't ask you don't get.

Parents are the ones that need to promote local footy to the kids. Thats how I got into it and how the majority of people I know got into it. Unfortunately not many parents are interested anymore
