RPH COVERAGE AT RECORD SETTING PACE
Committed SANFL broadcasters for the past 16 seasons, 1197am RPH Adelaide have taken their coverage to new levels in 2006 broadcasting LIVE a station record 43 of the leagues 90 Minor Round matches.
Including finals this totals 51 SANFL matches broadcasted for the season, we believe a record for radio in the 129 year old history of the league.
As the SANFL concludes one of its most even and unpredictable minor rounds in recent memory the RPH Football Team will be going into overdrive broadcasting 9 of the final 16 matches.
This includes a triple header in Round 22 where we will be broadcasting games on Friday Night, Saturday and Sunday.
It concludes in Round 23 where we hope to cover the Double Header at Adelaide Oval, two critical games where finals berths may still be up for grabs.
Then it’s onto the finals where will be providing over 26 hours of live game-day coverage including every league final and both the Reserves Prelim & Grand Final.
That’s in addition to our regular dedicated SANFL segments on Monday Morning (7.30am to 8.00am),
Wednesday Morning (7.00am to 8.00am & Thursday Night (8.00pm to 9.00pm).
This record setting coverage could not have been possible without the support of the “team behind the team" our sponsors.
Led by major coverage sponsor Angas Securities they also include Grand Central, PDK Financial, The Marble Bar, Black & White Trucks, Smithfield Crash & Mechanical Repairs and Stillwell Ford.

5RPH Football Team Profile
Darryl Smith
As our regular game day and Morning Sports Show host “Smithy†has been the leader of the RPH Football Team since he joined the station in late 1997.
Amazingly it is believed he played his first game as a a Sturt player (1969 mini league) at the same time and on the same day where co-commentator Dennis Browne made his radio debut as an Around the Grounds Reporter.
Commencing Juniors at Kenilworth he won a premiership at U13’s level in 1969 before moving to Glenunga and training in Sturt special squads.
Poised to be selected by the Double Blues juniors in 1974 it was found Darryl lived in the West zone and it wasn’t until 1975 that a clearance was granted.
From there he won the 1975 & 1976 Under 17 premierships including the later as captain.
As captain of the U19 side in 1977 the Double Blues finished runners up. Over that time he played one reserves game in both 1976 & 1977.
He made his league debut in Rd 1 1978, the first Sturt mini league player to graduate to senior ranks.
His impact was immediate winning both the club’s and Channel Nine’s Best First Year Player award that year.
In ensuring seasons 3 debilitating knee injuries, all requiring reconstruction, played havoc with his career.
Through it all he stayed true to doing the hard rehabilitation work & he returned to stellar form in the mid 1980’s
His best season was 1986 where he was runner up in the Best & Fairest and winner of the Best Team Man, Coaches Player and Players Player awards.
In addition that year, he won the award for the Club Person of the Year the only player to have achieved that honour.
All up he played 200 league games, 176 for Sturt and 24 for the Eagles, including his 200th in 1990, the second last game ever for West Torrens before the merger.
Once retired as a player, Smithy coached the Unley Jets from 1993 to 1997. They won their inaugural premiership in 1993, collected another in 1996, finished
runners up in 1997 and third in 1994.
With RPH Adelaide, Darryl has been instrumental in giving “minor†sports a opportunity to gain vital media coverage on the Morning Sports Show.
Now in its seventh season, the Thursday Night SANFL League Teams Show was introduced in 1999.
It keeps RPH as the only media outlet where you can find out on a Thursday all the SANFL team selections for the weekend games.
In 2002, 2004 & 2005, he, along with co-comentator Dennis Browne, won the “Best Radio Interview†category at the SANFL Media Awards.
It was due recognition for their regular in depth Yesterday’s Heros segments with former SANFL star players.
Last year he was also a key member of the RPH Football Team which won only the second ever SANFL “Significant Contribution Awardâ€.
Then in a major coup in November he was in Canberra to accept, on the station’s behalf, the national “Best Commitment To The Coverage Of
Sport Award†at the Australian Sports Commission Sports Media Awards.
